So...whats for dinner?

    Bedo - I have one or two that are noisy loud but that commercial might be a little exaggerated.  Knew someone on a goat group once that culled hers for being loud.  They do have individual voices and I can usually recognize the one calling.  And one or two are really quiet most of the time, unless I am late feeding them in the morning.

    And they DO love Doritos or anything salty like chips.  Have a picture of one with a Dorito bag stuck on her/his head.  They get all the bags crumbs around here.

    Seaside - yes, you would know you were a goner if you see Jim Cantore.  He's on the Weather Channel right now but so excited he can't keep tomorrow and Friday straight.  And no, they named the storm Nemo.  How cute! Oh and they've cancelled the regular programming for storm alert.  I just learned what I need to carry in my car and toilet paper was one of them.  That's not something I would want to run out of.  Milk and bread seem to be the favored storm items.  Peanut butter/jelly.  Make sure you have a water supply if you rely on power to pump it.  I would want something like canned stew stuff that I could heat in fireplace or over a grill.  Those premade tuna salads with crackers or tuna in general.

    Dinner tonight will be catch what you can. Just not in the mood to cook. But I do have everything I think to make Carole's potato leek soup. Now to get crackin' on it tomorrow.  We actually have winter coming back on Tuesday with highs in the 40s and Accuweather is calling for snow???.  I don't think so.

    Had not heard they were naming the storms....it's not enough to recall the year they happened?! I agree it is probably a marketing method. That's what our media culture does!

    I'm feeling a little badly that I have ignored DH's casual requests to head south for a couple weeks. I just have no motivation to plan, pack etc., and worry that wherever I go, I will end up with more allergies...such an annoying curse!

    Kay...I am not at all out of your league...just been to a few restaurants which feature that first bite ( a "pleasurable mouthful" may be the translation...others may know it more accurately than I) of something delightful to get your taste buds/appetite going. It is presented as the first bit of food before the meal. I have never had it in the form of tiny bit of soup before....and not so sure I'm crazy about that idea....but we'll see.I look forward to making this menu with the woman with whom I'm sharing the duties. She has lived in many other countries, so her soup idea is clearly more refined than my tastes!

    Another idea brought up by our friend whose house we were at for the Super Bowl (ahem....mid winter party in Boston!;) is to have our own Big Night dinner. We still need to find one or two other couples who have a cooking member.....every time I think of other friends to include, I realize that they don't cook....disqualifying factor...collaborative effort since there is a lot to cook.

    Stay safe everyone....

    Lacey,

    Thanks to your post after your 'Big Night' dinner I did some googling to find out what you were talking about and it looked so interesting! No restaurant around here (that I know of) offers anything like that. Soooooo DH and I did our own this past Saturday. We made our own pizzas and streamed the movie (which we had not seen before) through Amazon Prime. Our pizzas were no Timpano, for sure, but it was a really good movie and a nice night!

    I think that would be a really great idea for a memorable party/dinner!

    You & DH have a marvelous time on your vaca.  The "C" word will be buried under all that snow, another 4 letter word I hate.  I told DH to get the snow blower ready, it may even need gas, I will probably be snowblowing myself, DH has severe advanced arthritis in his hip and will need a replacement soon, he is in a lot of pain, I don't think he will be able to operate the machine.  Oh well, I hope it is nice and fluffy and easy to shovel and snowblower, maybe I can use my leaf blower, lol.

    It's an old clunker.

    Seaside, isn't that a great movie! My DH has always loved it...and several years ago we also played it while making some special Italian dishes. We did an antipasto and then small plates of several kinds of pasta dishes with our friends who have since accompanied us to La Morra twice for the serious version. The owners of this small restaurant in Brookline Village, lived and trained as chefs in Piedmonte, (sp?) Italy, and started the Big Night movie/dinner a few years ago. I think they also do a La Dolce Vita movie/dinner.

    I love what you and DH did :) ......definitely more manageable and I love homemade pizza!! We recently ordered Amazon Prime, so I hope we can access some interesting shows/movies as well as ebooks.

    Lacey,

    If you are new to Amazon Prime be prepared to be spoiled and unwilling to go back to not having Prime... Between the 2 day free shipping (especially nice at Christmas time and college textbook ordering time) and the free streaming videos (hello seasons 1 and 2 of Downton Abbey) and book lending, I've been a happy camper!

    For those that have a student in the household with a valid studentname.edu email, check out Amazon Student. You can get most of the perks offered through a regular Prime account for half price for up to 4 years! You can choose via your Amazon account settings whether to just keep it for the year or to automatically auto-renew and charge your credit card.

    I signed up originally on a free trial but have gotten so much use out of it that, thus far, it is totally worth the charge!

    Sorry I got behind in this thread.

    Michelle, enjoy your trip.

    I love the Chew. And the fried chicken today sounded so good .

    Sorry, if I have missed something please pm me. Much love to all.

    Seaside, I was a bit put off by amount of the Prime charge, but we are doing the free trial, and will probably roll it into the regular membership. We use Amazon so much, and it will be nice not to have to always feel the need to pad a small order to get the 25 dollar free shipping. Wish we had gotten it before paying for seasons one and two so we could catch up on Downton. The local library was taking forever and we wanted to catch up quickly. Finished four weeks ago....then this week the library notified us that the DVD was in. ;/

    Maybe while we are snowed in this weekend we can explore the Prime offerings. I can definitely see how it would be really valuable to your family! Maybe we should rent a college student. :)

    ~~~~ waving. I have a college student who could use a little tuition assistance in exchange for borrowing her Amazon Prime.  ;-)
    Oh Seaside, Jim Cantore is headed your way. Not sure exactly what spot he's off to, but WeatherChannel sending I think 4 people.  Some people put on music, I put on WeatherChannel.  Just seeing that no school in Boston tomorrow.
    Hope everyone is getting their shopping/stocking up done.  Stay warm everyone.  At least it will be the weekend.  You can commiserate with me when its 110 in August.
    Hope Michelle got off safely this am.
    Not sure what is for dinner.  Found recipe for coconut couscous and might make that with something dug out from freezer even though I have no green onions for it.  DH would not know the difference.  I used to keep frozen chives.  Do they still make those?
    DH comes home tonight, yay!!  I was going to try a new recipe for a crock pot chicken and dumplings tonight but spent too much time running errands.  So I am going to make a chicken pot pie instead.  I got to the grocery store nice and early this morning and it wasn't crowded at all.  I hate to say it, but I hope we do get two feet of snow.  DH would love to ride his snowmobile and so would the boys.  Plus we could make a wicked cool fort!
    Waving back to you Susan!
    If your daughter does not have interest in the prime membership for herself, you can sign up through your Amazon account and give her .edu e-mail. The only time that e-mail is used is in the very beginning they send an e-mail to that address to verify that it is indeed a working address. You then click something in the e-mail and that's the extent of it.
    After initial sign-up, emails, etc go to whatever e-mail you have listed on your account settings and not the .edu one unless that's what you want.
    DD just hits me up to order for her if she needs to!
    This is from the Amazon site and says things a little more clearly than I did...
    "To sign up, visit the Amazon Student sign-up page. Once you submit the sign-up form, you'll receive an e-mail at your .edu e-mail address to confirm the address is valid; click the verification link in that e-mail to complete the sign-up process.
    If your .edu e-mail address isn't listed on your Amazon.com account, that's OK. The only e-mail we'll send to your .edu e-mail address is the verification e-mail. After that, other Amazon Student e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address listed on your Amazon.com account."
    Hope this helps!
    Luvmygoats,
    I SAW that about Jim Cantore this morning when I was also watching over coffee this AM! lol. I'm in upstate NY and we are looking at 6-10" at this point. Not nearly what the Massachusetts and New Hampshire girls are looking at!
    Laurie,
    Good thinking getting out early to go to the store. I share a car with my son and he's in class until 4:30 today so I will need to go when he gets home. I bet it's going to be a zoo by then. :(
    Lacey,
    While on the free trial some of the Prime Benefits such as the video streaming and Kindle lending library aren't included. They only kick in if you choose to go to the paid student membership. When I signed up I figured I'd try it for a year and see how much (or not) I would use it... Used it tons and just renewed for another year in January! EDITED to add: OK just so I can confuse things a bit more....lol.. streaming and Kindle lending library ARE available during the free trial period for the regular Amazon Prime accounts just, not the Student ones....
    Well ladies, the TV has started blaring out the Winter Storm Warnings so it looks like this is for real! Stay safe and warm!
    Hi everyone!  We've made it to LAX and our flight to Kauai leaves at about 3 p.m. LA time.  I'm ready for a nap - the car picked us up at 4 a.m. eastern time.  Rick was all about drugging me for the flight, hoping I'd sleep, until he figured out that if I sleep that much on the plane, I'll be having a 3 a.m. wake up in Kauai...LOL!  Now he seems more interested in keeping me awake!  Fickle man!
    Was googling earlier today for storm total maps to see how much they are actually predicting and came across this.... I thought it was pretty funny especially since at first glance I thought it was a real map!
    Seaside - that is tooo funny. Or maybe not for those of you living there.  Hope whatever part you are in you made it to the grocery this afternoon.
    Tonight's dinner is beef barley soup and sourdough bread.  I don't know what's going to happen to my sourdough starter when I go south next week for 3 weeks without anyone to feed it.  I knew I shouldn't be responsible for another living thing.
    seaside haha  I like that we are in the "hit the liquor store section"
    Took the doggy to get her sutures out, then hit the grocery store.  we are officially all stocked up.
    I have enough school work to keep me busy through the weekend, and still working on recovering that chair (got disocuraged and stopped for awhile) And then of course I could always clean if I get really bored...but thats a big "if"
    Michelle   Funny about your fickle man....geesh make up my mind. ha ha  Wonder if him and the pilot would like to stop and ask for directions to Hawaii?
    Ha! Seaside,
    I think that RI is in the Totaly Scre#d section.  Govenor states everyone in RI off the roads by noon. State says expecting 18-24 inches ( some say 3 feet now)  coming down at 2-3 inches an hour with high winds starting by sunrise. Warning through Saturday.
    I'm defrosting salmon and trying to find a recipe for poaching it?  Does anyone have one?  So I can serve it cold?  I have lots of books and firelogs so this sounds like a day in Heaven to me without guilt, as long as everyone else is OK.
    luvmygoats,
    I made it to the store but it was sheer craziness which I expected it would be. I limited myself to no more than 15 items so I could use the express lane which wasn't too bad! The other lines were ridiculous! Par for the course in the NE... The forecast is for a little bit (OK maybe more than a little ) of snow and we all feel the urge to shop for a month...lol!
    Carrie,
    I think we are just a pinch north of the liquor store line in that picture but definitely well within that zone on a the real forecast map for tomorrow! Took care of that while I was out to the grocery store!!! I've got my wine... Bring it on!
    Nancy,
    Great minds must think alike.. I was really hungry for Beef Barley soup and tried to talk DD into it but she wasn't having it! So I wound up buying stuff to make Greens and Beans which my family can have over pasta and I can add broth and have as a soup... win-win! If I lived closer I could come over and 'starter sit'...lol!
    Bedo,
    How about this one... It's from Martha Stewart and looks straight-forward and doesn't require a lot of ingredients.... http://www.marthastewart.com/337705/simple-poached-salmon And I think it would be would be good cold similar to tuna....
    Seaside, I'm anxious to eat this one because it's a crockpot recipe from cooks illustrated. Haven't eaten it yet but it smells wonderful.
    bedo, here's a fish recipe I haven't tried yet. The spices and orange might not work for salmon but you could substitute lemon and dill.
    Fish poached in olive oil
    Zest 2 navel oranges
    Whisk:
    1 cup evoo
    1 Tbs chopped garlic
    1 tsp smoked paprika
    1/2 tsp kosher salt
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    2 fish fillets, skin removed
    (1 1/2 pound)
    1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
    Preheat oven to 250. Zest oranges and mince zest. Remove peel and pith. Slice oranges into rounds.
    Whisk together oil, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper and zest. Place fillets in a 2qt baking dish. pour oil mixture over the fish and top with orange slices. Make sure fish is submerged.
    Poach fish in oven until cooked through, about 1 hour. Garnish with parsley and serve. Serves 4.
    Nancy,
    I have been really into the recipes lately from America's Test Kitchen (same parent company as Cook's Illustrated but you can sign up for a free trial with minimal information)... Thus far have been very impressed with the recipes we've tried! Hope your soup tastes just as good as it smells!
    Nancy, don't worry about your starter, they are very forgiving.  After three weeks it might look a little funky but just stir it up and use as normal.  When I had pancreatitis I was hospitalized for a week and then spent six weeks in a nursing home.  Didn't even think to check it for a couple of weeks more when I got home and then I was still to week to use it.  Just stired it up and stuck it in the freezer until I was strong enough to make bread again.  It was fine!
    Seaside, the soup was delicious. One of the best crockpot recipes I've tried in fact.
