What a pre- nuptial adventure, Moon! In the worst case, if the smell wafts, the "beloved" cat will have managed to be at his mistress's wedding! ;).  Hope not!

Carole, your new space arrangements sound delightful! I LOVE creating and enjoying spaces....and almost never do it now due to too much clutter. I MUST get on with clutter clearing!

Back on the wagon today...spent two hours at the gym, doing almost all of my exercise routines (I have a lot from both my former PT guy and from current trainer). For dinner, on my own, I had my favorite kale soup and a side of ratatouille with a small roll. No dipping into the giant candies tonight! If I feel the need for sweet, I'll have some fresh raspberries.

Did anyone see the article in the NYT today from two Harvard docs about aspirin being a promising drug to ward off BC recurrence. Fortunately, my DH is a serial newspaper scanner/reader, and emails me articles that he thinks I might want to read. It's like having a reading service for free! :)

Eric, glad you're among the living again!

Monica, this will be a great wedding story lol! Hope the rest goes without a "hitch" (pun intended ;-)

Lacey - I looked up the NY Times article - thanks for the reference.  Wish I could believe it.  I took at least one 5gr aspirin a day every day for most of my adult life - often two or more/day, but never less than one until my first BC diagnosis in 2011.  I went back to one a day in 2012 and was diagnosed with a recurrence in 2013.  I was attempting to avoid strokes since that's how my Mother died.  Maybe it will have worked for that purpose but it didn't prevent BC for me.

Moon - have a great wedding trip.  Funny story about the veil, but probably only funny a couple of years from now.

Treated my self to green chili/chicken enchiladas at my favorite restaurant for late lunch/early dinner.  Also had a house margarita at the special $2.00 deal.  Maybe I'll have M&Ms for dessert.

Yes, we seem to be missing a number of people.  Maybe everyone is just wrapped up in finishing the school year, graduations, weddings, planning vacations.  I too hope all are well.

I'm really wondering about Carrie. Wish she would check in, as well as our other MIAs.

Oh you "bad" friends.  As we all know, this site has been having problems w/speed.  So while I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting to get connected back to 'my favorites' to choose the next thread ... I HAD to go into the kitchen and grab some M&Ms.  Thanks for the suggestion - I think.

I'm sitting here laughing.  Sharon is eating an apple and both dogs and the cat are sitting in front of her, looking very hopeful they they will get some of the apple core.  Dog 1 used to ignore apples until she discovered that Dog 2 loved them.  Now Dog 1 is also an apple lover.  I'm not sure about the cat, I think he just decided he should act like the dog.

I cooked a whole chicken when I still wasn't feeling well so that there would be something to eat while Sharon and DD are involved with finals.  Because I wasn't feeling well, it was a rather simple affair--put the chicken in a covered dutch oven, cover it with BBQ beans and a bottle of BBQ sauce and cook it, in the oven at 200F degrees, until it was done.  It took most off the day for the "stick in the meat" rapid read thermometer hit 170F degrees, which was OK.  The chicken has a nice BBQ flavor.

Carole, that's quite the portable house!

Sharon is kind of in a hard spot.  For her, the worst torture is nasal congestion.  Since she's been taking the Arimidex, her nose has been blocked up and it's only been getting worse.  She's going to try an Arimidex holiday and see what happens.  If her congestion improves, she may be avoiding the Arimidex...and that worries me a bit because the onc says the Arimidex is the most important part of her therapy.

Moon, enjoy the wedding.  "The Cat in the Veil" sounds like it will *eventually* be laughed about...in another 10-15 years! :-)

It looks like I'm heading to mall....DD needs some summer clothes.  It's been over 100F degrees already this year and in another few weeks, it probably will remain over 95F degrees until sometime in October.

I wish Carrie would check in, too.  I wonder if she moved to NC.  It must be getting to boating weather up in NY state.

Eric, your chicken dish sounds good.  I would never think of baking a chicken with baked beans and barbecue sauce.  Hope DD finds some cute summer clothes for a good price.  I hadn't heard about arimidex causing nasal congestion.

I played golf today with a woman (59 yrs. old) who is battling ovarian cancer.  Her dr has put her on tamoxifen.

We had a member-guest golf event that included lunch and a very good dessert.  I also bought a Midnight Milkyway at the grocery store and ate it on the way home.  So no dinner for me.  I'll warm up some veggie lasagna for dh and make him a salad.

Lacey, could you tell us a little about cooking your kale soup and the ratatouille?

    popping in quick.

Carole- Your 5th wheel is GORGEOUS! I am used to loading up for each trip.  I keep the basics in totes through the winter in the camper.  I wash all the bedding in the fall and made the beds a week ago or so. I go grocery shopping with a menu for the weekend and go straight from the car to the camper after shopping.  I have 3/4 of everything done right now.  I will finish tomorrow to head up for dinner time.

Tomorrow DS2 graduates his first year of pre school.  So proud that he went from tears to friends :)

Sorry I can't comment more.  I am pooped and have been sick but feeling better as I go.  I have been so busy.  I am looking forward to planting my bum by the fire camping and chatting with friends.  a lot to do tomorrow before we get there.

    I hope everyone is well.

    I agree- where is Carrie?

    Me too Minus.

Baked cod and baked corn off  the cob tonight. Tomorrow I'm off to the hill to get my knives sharpened and my cuccidatti fix.

Ditto on the wish that Carrie would check in. Was her move to NC a permanent year round one or a winter residence, I wonder? Also wonder how Susan is faring.....well, I hope.

Today after the gym, DH and I headed to Marathon Sports to get some new work out shoes. I tried to get the exact same Brooks sneakers recommended by my podiatrist when I injured my right foot several years ago. I buy the exact same style every couple years. Well, they changed the sneaker design which was disappointing, but more shocking was that the service person insisted that I needed a half size larger shoe to fit properly. Never took that size in all my 68 years...so it felt really odd ( and in my opinion, loose), and what seems funny is that I have gone down four dress/slacks/blouses sizes this year and increased my shoe size??!! Just didn't expect that! Oh the ironies of life! ;) I settled on another similar style Brooks sneaker in the recommended larger size...style still pretty boring compared to every other pair in the store. ;)

Tonight we finished up the bought roasted chicken from Monday, accompanied by roasted butternut squash (my very favorite!!) with a bit of maple syrup and cinnamon, and a tad of onion powder....just had to try that addition, and it was good. Also had some brussels sprouts and a salad of arugula, Persian cukes, grape tomatoes, red onion, and kalamata olives, with a dijon vinaigrette dressing.

Carole, ratatouille is super easy: In a large skillet, with one or two tablespoons evoo, saute over medium heat, a large diced onion for about five minutes, add 3 cloves minced garlic, cook another two minutes, then add a med to large diced sweet red pepper, a small diced zucchini, small diced yellow squash, a 3/4 inch cubed small to medium eggplant (some people salt and "sweat and rinse" it, but I don't always do that), and season with 1 tsp dried oregano or two of chopped fresh oregano (I also add a few sprigs of thyme if I have it), and some salt and blk pepper. Cook for 3-5 minutes, then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until all the veggies are soft, about 20 minutes. Then add the tomatoes. At the end of summer you would probably want to add about a pound of fresh coursely chopped tomatoes. Other times of the year, I add a large can of petite diced tomatoes (drain some of the juice) and raise the heat to med high and cook uncovered about ten minutes.  Add 3Tblspns chopped fresh basil or 1 T dried basil and simmer for a few more minutes. This dish gets so much better a day or two or three(!) later, and it can be served warm or room temp. You can also experiment with other spices you like....marjoram, fennel seed (in a tea ball), etc.

I've gotta run, but will post kale soup info after I get to NH for the weekend. Need to pack!

Lacey, thanks for the ratatouille recipe.  I'm trying to get more vegetables into the meals.  For what it's worth, on the shoes, Sharon's feet went up a size over the past several years, so they may be right.

Laurie.  It's amazing, watching them grow up.  I get to see the kids grow up as I drive the bus over the years.  I will never tire of seeing this....

Nancy, it sounds like you had cod and cob, or cod on the cob....just wondering if cod cut into small pieces can be called cod pieces....... :-)

Carole, when I'm not feeling the greatest, I'll do a chicken like that.  It tastes good has almost zero prep time and takes a long time to cook--so I can go rest some more while it cooks.

DD's school finished at 10:15 this morning, so she drove the 40 miles to my office and met me for lunch at a nearby Mexican food place.   The food was good, but I felt like I was going to pop after we were done.

Why Eric, yes they were cod pieces lol!

It's funny, I love all the parts of ratatouille, but not the dish itself. Too soggy for me. Weird I know.

Had such a fun day today. DH went with me and after stopping at my doc's office to leave some of my blood for testing (the least fun part of the day), we headed to The Hill. Dropped off my knives at the knife store then walked over to one of the Italian grocers. Loaded up on Italian meats and cheeses, pastas that I can't make, Italian bread, frozen stuffed pastas and locally made salad dressings.  We had lunch at a small pub that has bocce ball courts. Not the best place on The Hill to eat, but it was good nonetheless. We had the house special Italian sandwich. If you ever see bocce ball being played in St. Louis on tv, this place is where it's being filmed.  We then picked up my knives and proceeded to the Missouri Baking Company for desserts. The place was packed with two tour bus loads of tourists  buying goodies. I managed to get my two cannolis, one cuccidati and a cinnamon stick for DH before the swarm. I don't know where these folks were from, but they knew nothing about Italian bakeries or confections and were like kids in a candy store while the clerks were explaining what everything was. It was kind of cute.

After we got home, I tested my newly sharpened knives. Wow! I've never had them professionally sharpened before but I don't think they were this sharp even when they were new. And what a bargain, I got seven knives sharpened in an hour for $30. They're going in once a year for sure now. I've decided tomorrow night is stir fry just so I can use the knives!

But tonight is bounty from the Italian grocer -- veal and spinach cannelloni, manicotti for dh, fresh Italian bread with garlic butter and a salad with gorgonzola and pancetta with a sweet Italian dressing for dh and a garlic Italian for me. And of course, cream cannolis  for dessert. I will have to make the salad and béchamel for the pastas, but the tomato sauce has already been made. Good thing I walked 3 miles today and tomorrow it's Hello Gym!

Sounds like a great day, Nance.  And what a haul you made at the Italian stores!  Your dinner sounds like a feast.

We're finishing up the veggie lasagna tonight with a good tossed salad with blue cheese and avocado.

We're driving to Mobile, AL, tomorrow in the late afternoon and will return home on Mon. morning.  The LPGA is playing a tournament at the Robert Trent Jones golf complex so we'll be watching the ladies play golf on Sat. and Sun.  Really looking forward to seeing some of the exciting young players like Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie.  Maybe the 17 yr. old girl from New Zealand, too,  if she is there.

So no cooking for a couple of days.  We'll be staying at a motel.  It's too much trouble to take the 5th wheel for such a short trip.

Nance, I'm envying your sharp knives....and as far as that sumptuous sounding dinner, DROOOOL!    My leftover bowl of kale soup just can't compare! I will bring that casual soup recipe to NH and post it...as I said it's casual. I often change it as I go......And yes, ratatouille is pretty 'soft'....could just be called vegetable stew.....and the eggplant gives it a bit of texture.

So I thought we'd be in NH by now, and was frantically finishing up packing this morning, when I noticed that the unemptied trashcan was still in the bedroom. I asked DH if he forgot to take the trash to the recyling center (aka " the dump"). He replied that he was planning to take it "in the morning". Well, it seems I totally forgot that we (actually he) changed our plans so that he could have dinner with two good friends from their  "men's group" from church (DS2 used to call it "Men's playgroup" when he was a pre-schooler). They started this group in the early 80's, (meet rarely now) and wanted to get together now since one of the other members just died after living with Parkinson's for many years. He was a very dear man who did a lot for the youth in our town.

I was happy enough to have a light dinner here....and earlier, used today as a freebie, packed up some too big clothes (how daring!) for charity, stayed off the Ipad, and got lots of sewing done...trying to clear the dining room table of all my little half-made creations! And I'm totally packed for tomorrow's trip!

DH might decide to change plans more often and not remind me, so I'll be totally ready on time in the future! ;)

Carole, sounds like your weekend will be lots of fun. Enjoy seeing all the up and coming golfers!

Eric, I know just what you mean about watching the school kids grow up...it's part of what I loved so much about my job. By the way, these new sneakers are actually one whole size larger than any other shoes I wear. Maybe the sneaker companies are making them smaller.....unlike the clothing manufacturers who I swear have enlarged their sizes  to accommodate the country's expanding waistlines....not complaining, mind you! ;)

On that note, off to the treadmill.....

Lacey, I really think shoe sizes are very inconsistent. I buy the same shoes from the same maker, I have 5 pairs in different colors, and they are 3 different sizes.

On the way home from work is a kitchen knife shop.  The knife talk has reminded me that I'd like to stop at the place.

I took the day off, so I could do it today if things work out, or I could leave work early (fat chance) one day and see what they have.  I've always had just the $30 K-Mart special sets--never the a *REALLY GOOD* set..  The set I have now will "take a nice edge", but it dulls quickly.

"Taking the day off" really means "not going into the office".  I've already mowed the lawn, trimmed the shrubs and raked the gravel...next is the land mine clearing (have two dogs) operation I must do before working in the back yard.

I have read some Shakespeare. It's fine if I'm in the right mood.  My favorite pleasure reading topics are math history, how science and society interact and things about World War 2 in the Pacific.

In NH....the drive was delightfully fast earlier today, (I drive) minimal traffic for a holiday weekend. But now we see why so few people were racing to the lakes region. We are sitting in front of the woodstove fire that is keeping us from freezing. It is rainy and cool (euphemism) as the house was holding the cold from this winter, it seemed. Were last here over Columbus Day. Fortunately, either DH or I thought to set up the wood stove before we last left in October. So I had the pleasure of just striking a match to start the house heating process. ;) Hate to put the electric heat on if we can use the stove.

Happy to see that the local market down the road had opened for the season, so DH picked up a sirloin steak there and after I doused it with teriyaki sauce, he grilled that. Had a spinach, arugula, mushroom, red onion and walnut salad with a mustard vinaigrette dressing, and yet more ratatouille leftovers (yes, I made a lot earlier in the week!), a microwaved potato for DH. It was a very satisfying meal...and nice and easy after our packing, traveling, unpacking, and opening up the house. Now we just need some sun and warmth! ;)

The local farm where I shop at home has a "knife sharpener guy" who comes there every few months. I definitely need to use that service. I use a hand sharpener at home so my knives are never dull, but what a treat it would be to have them truly sharpened. I can recall going nuts with the totally dull knives in my mother's house several years ago. I foolishly offered to either get them sharpened or buy some better ones....and my sister went nuts since she felt having sharp knives around was too dangerous for mom. Hope no one ever makes that decision for me! I want to go out with my knives in working order!

Me too Lacey! I have decent knives, mostly Henckels and Wusthoff and I keep them sharp. They've been hard to keep an edge on for a while now.  I bought them one at a time as I could afford them. If I go anywhere where I know I'm going to cook, they go with me.

Tonight was a pork and veggie stir fry.

Eric - the Shakespeare comment was just an "in joke" for English majors.  A Shakespeare class is where I first heard about 'cod pieces'.  Quote below.  Hope it's not TMI.

From Wiki>>  A codpiece (from Middle English: cod, meaning "scrotum") is a covering flap or pouch that attaches to the front of the crotch of men's trousers and usually accentuates the genital area. It was held closed by string ties, buttons, or other methods. It was an important item of European clothing in the 15th and 16th centuries

Minus, thanks for the education! I will forthwith be careful about using that term around English majors, even if I am cooking with them! Have to say, I was missing the Shakespearean mirth several posts back, since here, cod pieces are just pieces of cod used in fish chowder!  Always love to learn new meanings! ;)

On the way home from the knife shop, we went by the drive in movie place, so we went home, got DD and went back to the movies.  DD had never been to a drive-in before.

I came home with some **very** nice knives.

I don't even remember where I first heard the term codpiece....

Had quite the productive day today. DH and I trimmed the lots and lots of dead stuff out of the knockout roses. The winter was very hard on them. I weeded, trimmed, planted caladiums and watered everything, even though it looks like we might get a shower this afternoon. I was very excited to see a little tomato and green pepper on my plants. I'll certainy be happy not to pay 88 cents for a green pepper! I harvested 3 fat pea pods this morning. Lol, going to need a few more for a meal!  My window boxes are looking very beautiful. So very beautiful, a black snake decided to stretch himself the length of the box yesterday to sun himself. Since he was violating the "No Snakes on the Porch" rule, DH transported him down to the woods. It's better for them if DH is the enforcer, he's very gentle with the non poisonous ones and picks them up (with heavy leather gloves) and carries them elsewhere. I use the broom. Tomorrow is house cleaning day since we're having friends over Monday for bbq and my DBIL is coming Tuesday for a few days to help finish the baking station among other things. Yay!

Tonight is steakhouse night -- grilled beef tenderloin filets, a twice baked potato and Greek salad with a feta dressing.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend and Monica's DD's wedding weekend is going  wonderfully. As for me, I'm off to the shower then to pop some popcorn!

New ones to replace the K-Mart ones.  It was a mixture of knives---I got the ones I liked.

An old, possibly home made from a saw blade, heavy cleaver that was in nice shape and when the guy sharpened it...is amazing.  I love how it feels and the blade is rounded.

Mcusta Zanmai; one 150mm and one 210mm long.

    Tojiro for the bread knife.

A Victorinox 3 inch paring knife.  Off all the paring knives, this is the one that felt the best...and unlike the other knives was only $5.
