So...whats for dinner?

Bedo - sorry about the cold. How's the new job? Had to laugh about your "marching orders". At least they didn't specify the kind of flowers (yet). 20 brownies? Like one pan with 20 pieces or 20 pans? Do you get to choose your own additive? (haha) When is the wedding?
Speaking of our offspring thinking we're dumb - I've been told that maybe I could be left alone to take care of my DIL's perfectly healthy dog that they've had for four years for a couple of hours if they went to the movie, but looks like I'll have to pass a very intensive exam first. Still not allowed to walk the dog alone. Oh well. Probably a good thing they live across the country.
Excellent "organic egg sandwich" today at Ruggles Green. Open face sourdough bread, thin sliced "all natural" ham, cheddar & swiss cheese grilled w/two lightly fried local organic eggs on top. Popcorn for dinner tonight with a lovely Russian River Pinot Noir.

I lost the post and couldn't recover it.
Bedo, the list sounds OK. I think she just wants you to enjoy the moment and not work yourself into a frenzy. As for the cold...colds suck. I'm 75% back to normal and best of all, it looks like Sharon and DD will avoid my cold.
Susan, the forgetting Sharon cooks too sometimes happens here. When I hear it, I'll say something like, "Sharon did most of the work on this." I don't know if it helps, but I try. Not related to cooking, but along the same line of thought, it bugs me when Sharon is called Mrs. Eric Lawson. It makes me feel like she lost her identity when we got married.
DD is back to normal. She swims, so it's not likely that she'll get another concussion. Her's was caused during a trash can race at a school assembly. Two kids put clean office desk sized trash cans over their head and run. They use the gym floor lines to guide themselves and the kids are all cheering. What annoys me the most about the whole thing was the large number of uninvolved people saying we should get a lawyer and sue the school....sigh.....

Eric, glad you are on the mend, and Bedo hope your virus is a fast moving one!
Minus, I am so happy to see your food descriptions! You clearly are able to enjoy food tastes again, yay!
And isn't it amazing how incompetent we become (not!) after raising our children to be responsible adults! Obviously you would do some terrible and irreparable damage to that poor dog in a matter of a few hours! LOL! DS and DDIL obviously don't have enough on their plates yet to appreciate parental help....
I can recall leaving our young lively sons and our dogs with my dad (who had traveled for his job and had never been involved in our childcare) and his wife (who never had a child or a dog) for a day and evening while we attended a wedding not far from their CT home. When we returned, the kids were contentedly asleep, and the dogs were happy and groomed! I was so thankful to them for giving us that day, and in subsequent years continued to thank them profusely for helping us out at that chaotic time in out lives. Not sure I would be so happy to get two active boys and two matted schnauzers for a full day! When we had dogs and two kids (and no local family support), we were more than happy to share them with any willing relatives.
And how lucky we were that Dad and his wife were so intrepid! I bet things change with DS if his family situation expands. You will become so much smarter!
Arrived home last night, and DH had a business dinner, so I put some of my roasted tomatoes on a piece of french bread, with mozzarella and parmesan, and called it a pizza night. Boy, those roasted tomatoes are so rich with flavor!
Having "packer envy" as I see my next door neighbor taking one carry-on sized suitcase to Italy today. Wish I could borrow her packing sense. I always take too much due to my indecisiveness.....and I hear it is uncharacteristically wet and cool there, which means my plan to bring just a few light cotton skirts is shot! Oh well, I have until the 16th to work this out. I am a bad traveler....took too much to every place I went this summer. On a happier note, we will take a cooking course one day in Lucca, and DH is participating too. Yay! Maybe he will come home able to cook some dinners for us! Our next door neighbors are taking cooking classes for the whole week they are in Umbria. Her DH (who also only grills) should be quite the competent cook when they get home.....the future will tell!

Oh Lacey, a trip to Italy.....so jealous. Eat some pasta carbonara for me. And gelato at every corner----so many flavors.......

Lacey, I'm a chronic overpacker too. I like to be prepared for everything lol! Looking forward to your Italian food reports!
I'm limited in what my phone will let me type, so I'll just say hi to all!

I made it! I made it through Friday!!!!!
This week I did a major installation, started a second one, prepared a client for their annual inventory, and did an Alpha install session. This was just three of my five active clients. Oh, and I resurrected a dead server. I am so pleased I made it.
Food was eaten though. I had to eat a few lunches in restaurants, which led to leftover lunches the next day. Dinners were simple. Tomatoes, of course, at every, single meal. I remember a seared tuna steak with fresh corn and steamed broccoli. The tuna turned into fish tacos the next night with a pico de gallo salsa and black beans. Today's half slice of pizza at a client office fought back, and I was mighty sick this afternoon, so I made scrambled eggs and English muffins for supper tonight. Nothing like eggs on a tender stomach.
Back to work tomorrow....... but I am taking an hour off tonight to slump.

Wow. It's quite quiet today/tonight.
DD went to her school's away football game. It was 65 miles each way to the game and she drove herself--getting home just before midnight. We were a bit nervous, but at the same time, we feel we have to let her find her wings. As agreed, she got home just before midnight....which was just about right for the game getting done at 10:30, getting a quick bite to eat.
This morning we got up at 4:00 to go kayaking on the Salt River. We saw lots of wild horses and a bald eagle.
Dinner tonight was chicken with a yogurt, chicken broth, tomato, garlic, onion, lime juice, cilantro sauce thickened a bit with some corn starch and cream......on a bed of brown rice. A salad and some bread made for a simple meal.
Going to get ice cream...
0 -
Eric - Good for you letting your DD find her wings & supporting her. I remember when I used to have that kind of energy. Not in bed yet at 1am and back up at 4am for a strenuous day. No longer. The kayak trip sounds wonderful.
I couldn't sleep last night and was reading when we lost power around 2am. So to report my latest culinary oddity - I decided a snack was in order and decided on garlic naan bread with Bailey's Carmel Irish Cream to drink. Assembled and eaten w/the aid of a flashlight. I read w/my flash for awhile but power didn't come back on until 6am.

Eric, Wing flying is the hard part isn't it? Appearing cool, calm, and collected on the outside, but worried for our children's safety on the inside. And yes, software.
Made some lamb burgers last night. Did a variation that included lots of fresh herbs from the garden and omitted the feta cheese in the middle. Our cherry tomato plant has been quite productive lately, so I made a Greekish salad with lots of cherry tomatoes, garden picked red onions thinly sliced and some romaine lettuce with a lemon vinaigrette. Mr 02143 hates cucumbers and olives, so I can't include them, but I topped with some nice Bulgarian feta cheese which gave us some of that brininess. Normally we would grill these outside but given the tornado watch, I chose to do them on the stove top with the new grill pan. Not a bad little pan, but like all grill pans, lots of work to clean up later. This is some fatty lamb, so having the grooves to drain off the fat was a very good thing. Neither of us felt the need for a carb last night so we skipped having either a bun or a tabouli salad.
Once the crazy weather went over us, the skies opened up and the temps and humidity dropped. Today is a gorgeous day with brilliant sunlight. How will I use this day? The same way I have used every day [almost] for the past three months... coding. I can't flag now. Must.Push.On.

Hello susan minus and all!
Minus, that sounds like the food I used to eat (unbeknownst to me) when I foolishly took ambien for a week.
Eric the Kayaking sounds wonderful. I want to see wild horses
In bed most of yesterday with cold searching the web and finding out things that I put out to be products of my family's "active imaginations" were true...Sorry Grandma, chickens really do sit in trees, we are probably part Cherokee, Mom, I guess you really did only have one dress now that I see the part of Appalachia you grew up in, and OK brother you really did graduate 11th in a class of 240. Missing my family that is gone
Feeling grumpy as I finish my current job Oct 8 and start the new on Oct 10 with only the week end off. I did promise my interim job that I would stay to cover maternity leave even if it meant giving up permanent job at university. I'll work 8 month out of the year with summers off. I hope it doesn't drive me nuts
I made 12 black bean burgers yesterday and froze them and now am getting ready to leave the house and collect zucchini and squash. I want to make them with sautéed almonds and parmesan and cut them up like match sticks.
DD's wedding is in May. I explained that my sunflower and zinnia bouquets in mason jars which I give to everyone won't be ready in May. She said that I could use Hydrangeas. I don't have a hydrangea bush and I can't picture one in a mason jar.
Sorry for the grumpy post. I think that's what staying inside all day does to you.
Hello to all I missed too
Special, I want your daughter's job
Carol, it seems my little Nissan won't pull a tear drop. decisions decisions, RVing sounds like fun!
Hi Nance!

Yay for making it through the week, Susan. May this one goes as well....or better!
Hope you cold is waning, Bedo.
Eric, hope the kayaking was great! It is fun (and sometimes a bit nerve-wracking) to see our kids spread their wings....and really worth it to support the process without being too helicopter-y! My mother was a worry wart who was fortunately (for us) a bit passive in asserting her wishes, otherwise we would all have been tied to her waist. So I took a very different posture with my sons, and reveled in their attempts at independence. Seems to have worked....I wonder if we would have felt/been different with a daughter's journey. Hope not.
Minus, love your determined approach to enjoying that food oddity, in the dark yet!
Yesterday, as I was talking to a friend at a local group picnic about how delicious the pies (which were gone) were, she took a dorito chip and scooped up some of the pie filling left in the plate. Sweet and salty for sure!We had house guests yesterday, and after being away most of the summer, I had major clearing up to do to accommodate our eating in the dining room, and for them to sleep in the guest room. I spread out too much, especially with all my sewing stuff, which is currently gone from the dining room table.
So the guests (long time friends from our town who moved to Santa Monica last year to be near their adult son, an only child) came in the afternoon, and we watched the Pats' game while having a cheese, crackers, fruit and nuts platter along with small skewers of watermelon, feta chunks and basil. For dinner we had grilled chicken breasts which had been marinated over nite in a balsamic, garlic, rosemary blend; grilled veggies, same marinade; baby spinach salad with pear, cranberries, and walnuts with dijon vinaigrette; and local corn on the cob. They left this morning to attend a belated good-by luncheon at our friend's former lab at one of the Boston hospitals before heading back out west.
So today we are back on the exercise wagon, and will later head to the gym for aerobic work and stretching class.
Lots of grilled leftovers will be dinner tonight. Yay! I am pretty tired from guest prep.
Oh, our friends gave me some tips for efficient, one travel size suitcase packing (they never check their luggage when taking long trips)...who knows if I will ever be able to do it! DH always says I should just put a trailer hook on the house!

Been reading a book called Practical Paleo...... called the nutritionist and asked if she had seen it, she hadn't but I summarized it and she said it sounded like what she wanted me to do.....So I went to the grocery store, and if anybody who knew me had seen my stuff on the checkout lane, they would have died laughing and asked me who I was trying to kid....... Honestly, I spent 54.00 and there was no meat in the cart and 2 boxes of Mac & Cheese (my comfort food). and rest was produce, almond butter, almond milk, etc.
I am now staring at a lb package of black eyed peas thinking I will put them in the crockpot with onion, garlic, jalepeno (or maybe green chilies) and then add some kale the last 30 minutes. But, of course, I didn't buy an onion or a jalepeno at the store. I got a ton of root veggies that I am going to roast in olive oil and herbs. (fennel, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, turnips).....OH and Got the really big container of Greek yogurt to use instead of milk in my smoothies....yeah right.....
0 -
Redheaded, have you been working with a nutritionist for a while? My derm doc has recommended the Paleo diet, (she follows it herself and recs it to everyone) but since I think I'm close enough to it for what I can tolerate (hubris, I guess!), I have stayed where I am....eating some naturally raised meats along with, fish, a lot of vegetables, few grains. and fruits. So did the nutritionist recommend that diet for a particular result....... e.g., chasing recurrence, weight loss, improving methylation, healthy skin, etc? Keep us posted on how it goes. The bean recipe sounded interesting! Of course I could never pass that off as "dinner" to my DH.

Came across an interesting recipe on Yummly for chicken cakes with sweet chili sauce...sort of like crab cakes with interesting spices in them. Plan to try making them for dinner.....

Hi everyone! Remember me?
SO sorry for dropping off the grid for as long as I have. It was a crazy busy summer now followed up with a busy start to a new school year. I watched another girl over the summer who honestly bugged the crap out of me- sorry! We had lots of camping trips and trips to the lake and were gone almost every weekend. It was very tiring and wonderful at the same time. We had so much fun. One food thing that blew my mind was on one camping trip another family and I took turns with dinner. When it was the other families turn they made Thanksgiving dinner! He brought a rotisserie and cooked the turkey which was amazing, and had stuffing baked potatoes, corn on the cob and squash. The next day we all had open faced turkey sandwiches for lunch. It was SO good. He will be doing it again for our final camping trip Columbus weekend.
Another fun thing we did this summer was to have a crazy Monday play date day. Three of my girlfriends would come over with their kids and we would have 4 Moms and 9 kids having a pool play date day. The moms had as much fun as the kids. Everyone would bring food to share and take turns feeding the kids lunch etc. By the end of the summer both of my boys learned how to do a flip into the pool. It is amazing how daring children can be and how fast they can learn!
So....now the school year is upon us and I have DS1 in first grade and DS2 in preschool. So ds1 is gone m-f 7:50-2:20 and ds2 is m, w, f 9-12. SO yes I drive in circles and enjoy small pockets of time to myself:) They are both playing soccer this year so we have soccer on average 4-5 times a week. Blah- makes dinner time tough. For the most part I skip practices and cook and only go to games- otherwise we would be living off of chicken nuggets! No thank you!
Kids are loving school and soccer and the band marches on....
I have been enjoying all the fresh veggies from my dad's garden and had chicken parm two night ago- soooo good. Last night was American Chop Suey. Tonight will be left overs of hot open faced chicken sandwiches from the left over chicken that I roasted a few days ago.
I hope everyone is doing well and I am READY to try to keep up with this thread again!
HUGS to all

Laurie - Soooo great to hear from you. I don't do Facebook but someone (Lacey?) was kind enough to let us know you were OK. Sounds like a great summer and a good start to the school year. Funny - we think Moms have a lot of time once all kids are in school, but with the different schedules & the after school activities it just doesn't happen. Glad to have you back.
Yesterday I had a 6 month check w/the rad onc. This was on the other side of town so I ran a number of errands and stopped for a quick lunch before my appointment. I rarely do fast food & it's probably been 12-18 months since I've been to Mickey D's, but I was horrified at the prices. Quarter pounder meal/wfries & coke was $6.48. Good heavens. I complained about $10.00 for a sirloin burger at Beck's Prime but it was really good. McDonald's - not so much.

Yay for the return of Laurie! Makes my heart smile.

So I never did make the Thai chicken cakes today....definitely tomorrow since I bought the ingredients for making them.
Busy day with an ortho appt to have the pained shoulder checked before we leave stateside, then a trip to get new sneakers, which was a pain since the style I always get for good arch support was changed, so not comfy anymore....but I did settle on another pair. Then off to get a compression sleeve for my arm so I don't take any risks for lymphodema on the long flight. That is one bc condition I have so far avoided, and hope to keep it that way. Then off to the store to get some ingreds for the "chicken cakes", then home to pick up DH for a walk to our polling place since it was primary day....then we walked to another store to get the rest of the recipe ingredients....then took dH's car to our mechanic in the next town, then stopped at another store to see if they had any good looking corn to go with dinner....nada.
While in the store, it was nearing the dinner hour, and we ran into our next door neighbor who we have hardly seen all summer given our away schedules, as we chatted she mentioned they were having lamb burgers tonight, so DH and I (feeling starved at that point) decided to defer the chicken cakes until tomorrow, and go for the lamb burgers tonight.
I was dying to try Susan's version of embedding the feta in the lamb burger instead of adding it under the bun which is messy. Yes! Thanks Susan! So I added my rosemary powder, fresh minced garlic, some crumbled dried mint, black pepper and a bit of salt with a prize chunk of feta in the middle. OMG! These were good, especially with lettuce, fresh tomatoes, red onion and a bit of ketchup. We had asparagus and an arugula salad to complete the meal.
So, along the lines of the young love theme, on Friday DS2 and Chicago girl are coming here for dinner. Not sure what I will serve, except probably we'll grill, and one appetizer will be the watermelon, basil, feta skewers. They were a hit with our transplanted Cali friends.
Minus, your palette is not only back but in descriminating style. Yay for you!

Hi to everyone. Lacey, I struggle with packing for a trip, too. That's one thing I like about rv travel. I have a big closet in this oversized 5th wheel. Looking forward to hearing about your trip to Italy.
DH and I have been on the move. We left Grand Marais, MN, on Sun. and drove to Ashland, WI. On Mon. we drove to Escanaba, MI, in the UP. We are still in Escanaba. Today was a rainy day, perfect for a trip to the Laundromat, our last of the summer! Tomorrow we'll be moving on to lower MI to the town of Petosky, which is also on Lake Michigan.
Tonight's dinner will be hamburgers at the bar/grill across the street from our rv park. We've been told by several people that it's a MUST to go for hamburgers there on Wed. night. The burgers cost $1 but you must order a beverage and/or some side dish like fries or onion rings. Beer on tap sounds like a good beverage!
Bedo, the flowers your daughter mentioned (I'm having a senior moment) would look great in a mason jar. They grow in profusion in south Louisiana. I can visualize the blossoms (big balls of blue or pink, depending on whether the soil is acid or alkaline). HYDRANGEA!!! I grew up hearing them called "hygeranium."
Susan, it sounds like you're overworked. Any thoughts about retiring?
Laurie, welcome back!

Carole, so good to hear from you, and not to hear that you were caught in any of that bad weather in the states you were visiting.
So today as I was finishing up my leg lift exercises at the gym, I hear my name called out in an excited voice. It was my PCP, wit her gym clothes on and wearing a baseball cap, waiting for her hair to grow back. I was at once thrilled to see her and saddened to see that she has joined our "club". In very early Spring, I had gotten a letter from her that she was taking a leave of absence and would return in Sept., asking everyone to respect her privacy for that duration...and letting all know how their health care needs could be met during her absence. I was so worried about her, but honestly thought that she would be the last person to get BC....not sure why except that she seemed so healthy, thin, etc....and because she is my doc!! Well, we had a great catch up....and I was happy to learn that her treatment team was the same as mine. They have been wonderful! And we share our fitness center trainer (also a bc survivor....at 32!) I don't envy her returning to her PCP job, but she seemed as energetic as ever, so I guess she is good to go! Ooohhhh, the grasp of this damn disease!!
For dinner tonight I made the Thai chicken cakes, and made some small ones to have as appetizers on Friday when DS2 and gf are here for dinner. I wasn't crazy about them, but DH was. I think I didn't like the texture. Had a huge garden salad with them, and some sauteed zucchini and summer squash and onions sprinkled with a bit of balsamic glaze with chili pepper.
Am thinking that on Friday, I might make tandoori chicken, which DH can grill, some veggies, salad, and maybe black rice if there is no good corn around.
I am literally (used correctly) getting anxious about packing for this trip. Tomorrow I may hit the mall and see if I can get a few light non-wrinkly blouses and slacks, and a nylon purse. Apparently acc to my neighbor who is there now, the days are hot and the nights very cool. I got my international driver's license today, so there I will be tooling up mountains in our stick shift car. ;/
We leave next Tuesday and return the 27th...and probably sleep the 28th!

Laurie, glad to "hear" you again. It *does* sound like you had a busy summer.
Lacey, check out http://shesimmers.com. It's a Thai food blog that has some really wonderful stuff.
When I go on a 3 week cold weather deployment, my big bag is 68 pounds and my day pack is 19 pounds. Summer stuff is about the same weight. This also includes my personal tools. I have to be pretty much self sufficient for 4 days for food, water and clothing, so it's an interesting process figuring out what and how to pack so I have enough stuff but can still carry it by myself. It helps that I travel in uniform so I don't have to pack my 14EEEE steel toed/armored sole boots.
It's not comfortable, but it get me by.

Lacey sounds like your diet is pretty good with what I'm doing. We have a nutritionist at our cancer center and she's free if you are a patient. I've met personally with her 3-4 times and I can call her with questions. She also does a once a month class on various topics that I try to hit. This months is about cleaning products for your home. all about cutting down on toxins. I asked her why they wanted to limit the dairy and she said because of the hormones fed to the cows. Suggested dairy come from fermented products- like cheese and yogurt and told me I could get plenty of calcium from the right veggies and some fish on occasion (like the canned salmon with the bones)Living alone, its hard to eliminate the convenience of processed stuff. Like to snag that package of lunchmeat, etc. My guilty pleasure for now is a cup of Land of Lakes cocoa made with milk at night. Or, if you were a fan of Lark Rise to Candleford on PBS, its "my one weakness". HAHAHA
I need the lamb burger recipe . Not sure if I will like lamb, so that's probably the cheapest way to try it. Not too big a fan of Feta cheese, And I can find it (Lamb) hormone free. ( Some of the hormones are estrogen that's in the food chain, so that's why they want the special meats, less dairy).
Also wonder if anyone has tried Bison?? They have that in some of the markets here as well.

Carole, well... retirement is not really in my cards. For one, these are supposed to be my high-earning years. If I didn't work, then our income could not support living in the Greater Boston area. My most measures, I am about 15 years from retirement age. Now, we know that chances are I will have to stop working before then. The problem is that I have five projects all converging at the same time. Bad planning on my part, and I just couldn't say no to these large numbers.
Bedo, sounds like you have a weekend that you have to have fun in between those two jobs. Can you do something extra fun? A second bowl of mussels?
Laurie! So good to "see" you again. Do your children know what a special childhood you are giving them? You seem to make a life of having fun and friends with food.
Lacey, your trip is fast approaching. I am not a good packer at all. And then I always wear about four things when I am abroad. I wish I could know before I leave which things would be those four things. Would save me a ton of trouble. Tonight is the DS2 and GF2 dinner... hope it goes well.
I just spent four days with my Mother in the North Country. I made a ton of progress cleaning out my father's office. I packed up all the fine china that my kid wants, and 32 wine glasses. 32 wine glasses! I have cognac snifters, and aperitif glasses, and who all knows what else. They were just too pretty to have tossed in the garbage. Clearly, I need to get more wine. I wrangled with the contractor, and measured more walls. Helped her pick out a washer/dryer. Went simple for our meals... deli meats. pita and more garden tomatoes for lunch and then I did a simple baked pasta with cheese thing for dinner.
Tonight we are having grilled lamb chops [we must eat last year's lamb since the new ones will be here soon], potatoes and steamed green beans. A simple meal cooked by mr. 02143.
Weather is getting cold, but the Harvest moon shining on Mt. Washington and all the Presidentials was absolutely stunning. Should have taken some pictures.

Hello all, have been reading along but have cooked nothing in a week and a half as I am in California for a visit and my reunion. I cooked a lot that I left for DH and DD. I return home Mon. And will resume the normal daily cooking I'm used to. I have been on a bit of a nostalgia tour - it has been interesting.

Lacey-- I am trying to drop weight as I was 5/6 and 206 lbs at diagnosis. I am now 185.6 lbs. But my MO didn't want me to try to hard till treatment was over.
You have a great trip and don't worry about your clothes. Just go for mix match comfort and maybe one nice outfit. You won't see these people again likely, right? Except DH???
0 -
Thanks for the packing support folks! I now have no more excuses to distract myself from that task. DS2 and DS2GF just left, so no more social events to focus on....
Did go to the mall yesterday and got some nice buys on tops and slacks. My best buy (I thought) was a very stylish rain jacket that would have been perfect for day or evening rain. Well, once I got it home, I noticed a large unfixable frayed slit down the back of the jacket. Damn! I hate not having it to wear, and even more hate to trek to the mall to return it!
So yes, Susan, the dinner event happened tonight..... A few days ago, DS2 shared that gf was not an adventurous eater, and doesn't touch fish. Yikes, I thought.....in our food driven family!? Fish no problem for tonight, but I had already planned tandoori chicken, and those little Thai chicken cakes with sweet red chili sauce and cilantro. Well, I ended up keeping some chicken separate, and marinating it only in Italian dressing. In the end, she ate a piece of both....and enjoyed the Thai chicken cake appetizers. She really liked the watermelon, feta, basil skewers. So did we all......Apparently, as we discussed her food preferences, it seems that she cannot tolerate fish unless it is well masked (like really bread crumby crab cakes). Anyway, we had a lovely evening, and she was eager to see photos of DS2 as a little boy, so we took visual trips down memory lane with/for her. It was fun! I can see why she appeals to DS2, with her affable laid back style....and her knowledge and enjoyment of spectator sports, since he is so passionate about sports. It will be interesting to see where this relationship goes. They certainly have racked up frequent flyer miles while nurturing it for over a year.
Redheaded, you sound like you are doing very well with your weight loss efforts. Congrats, and keep it up. Great to have a nutritionist available. Are you in an exercise plan, also? That has helped me (and DH) immensely in meeting fitness and weight goals.
Special, hope you have created some good memories, tho I recall you saying that this was to be a bittersweet trip/reunion. Safe trip home......
Susan, I can just imagine the beauty of that Harvest (Super) Moon on Mt.Washington. It was gorgeous just shining on my humble street!
Okay, if you see me posting a lot this weekend, please feel free to remind me to get off the ipad and pack clothes! And Eric, I will probably wear my new size 10 Brooks sneakers on the plane. They are plenty big enough for saving room in the suitcase....but wow! 14 quadruple E with steel toes....just wow!!

Lacey, I'm glad I'm not the only woman on this thread with big feet! I wear a range of sizes from 9 to 10N.
It is unseasonably cool here in Petosky, MI. Too cool, unfortunately, for comfortable biking, so I walked on the lovely paved bike path that runs along the shore of Little Traverse Bay, which is part of Lake Michigan.
This is actually soup weather so yesterday I bought cubed beef and cooked beef veggie soup for dinner last night. It tasted great with some dark wheat bread that we bought at a bakery and a salad of sliced tomatoes from the local farmers mkt and avocado. The dressing was a mixture of blue cheese, Hellman's light mayo and wine vinegar.
Tonight's dinner will be a repeat of last night but, alas, no blue cheese.
Tomorrow we move a little farther south to Manistee, also on Lake Michigan. It's supposed to warm up a little, into the low 60's. It was 88 degrees at home when I talked to my mother.

Have been MIA again. Have just managed to catch up and read your posts - no way could I respond to them all. But I have so enjoyed your tales of your Summers and food.
Mine was going along quite nicely until last Friday. Was at a wedding in a beautiful part of BC - Sorrento. Was held at a retreat/campground. So as I knew the ground was uneven I thought I'd be sensible and wear flats. After the wedding service, which was lovely, we were going back to our campground before the reception and I rolled my ankle.... broken in 2 places. Surgery last Sunday - 5 inch plate and 5 screws on left side and 2 screws on rights side. Left the hospital last Tuesday. Outlaws are visiting from the UK and this weekend we were supposed to be in San Fran (last weekend before they leave) - of course that has been cancelled. No weight bearing for at least 2 weeks (I have a follow up appt. with the surgeon this Tuesday).
Outlaws have been so helpful but am relying on their cooking which although I am very grateful for is quite typically English... bland. That sounds very ungracious and I don't mean to be. But it is meat, veg or salad (green) and pots or fries every night !!
Tonight we are going to one of our local eateries along the lakeshore so I am looking forward to that.
Hugs and safe travels to all xxxx

Tazzy - sorry to hear about your ankle. Keep us updated.
Carole & Lacey - joining the club with 9-1/2 feet.
Grilled ground sirloin patties tonight & baked New Jersey organic sweet potatoes for the side. We've had a cold front go through and temperatures went down to 69 last night. (don't laugh y'all) Tomorrow I'll roast a pork tenderloin & finish the last of the fresh corn on the cob.

OK...just a quickie...
Carole, it is definitely soup weather here today also....but we had sandwiches of cold tandoori chicken made with hummus, arugula, red onion. They were good....would have been better with a good cup of soup!
Been watching packing videos all day....both of us!! It is actually fun...now if one of those presenters could just come and do it for me.

Tazzy, so sorry to learn of your ankle break(s)....I guess maybe the good news is that generally breaks heal faster than soft tissue injuries, so I do hope that is true for you!
Well big footed ladies, imagine my horror when the guy at the shoe store kept insisting that I should get the ten and a half Brooks sneaker....so glad I stuck to my guns and bought the 10s. They feel perfect...tho the color could be better.
Back to the task at hand....I was planning to bring more wintery black slacks to Italy for when we attend a Puccini/Verdi concert in Lucca (no dress code, yay!). But then, I came across a pair of much lighter (for the suitcase weight restriction, of course) black slacks what had been pretty tight last New Years when I wore them. Yay!.....They are perfectly comfy now, and will be let into the suitcase.
Plus I serendipitously found a pretty teal blouse of very lightweight dressy material that dresses up those slacks, so it makes the cut too. Busy shopping my closet....when taking a break from the videos. Ha!Back to work....
