laurie - I did the same thing with the UTI/URI for our poor lacey - lol! I went through a number of variation of what a URI was, none of them good, until I did the forehead slap - upper resp, doh!

susan - fingers crossed for the sale to go through.

  • I was stumped by URI, too! I'm not good with interpreting initial code.

Thought someone else might be interested in this. So cute. Can't wait to try it. Sorry I don't know how to create a link. Just copy and paste into Google: tiphero.com/baked-apple-roses

And we have a signed offer! This is a cute little duplex in Arlington, MA only a six block walk to the center. We will rebuild the kitchen and add a half bath before the kids move in. The rest of the improvements will wait till I make more money! Inspection, the last hurdle, is tomorrow morning at 9am.

Celebrated with a family dinner of roasted salmon, baby white potatoes, and spanikopita. And one of us had a whisky!

Congrats Susan! Sounds like a great spot! No wonder you were all up on the Arlington prices! Eager to learn where. I loved our house there... Nice celebration dinner!

Went to La Boheme tonight and it was a very contemporary version. Really wonderful score, sung beautifully. A favorite opera!

We had dinner locally before heading into town, and I was underwhelmed by the steak salad I had at Not Your Avg Joe's. I did not get a blink of sleep last night as I as so congested and tonight I have a humidifier next to my bed, so I hope sleep will come soon. The infection is busy trying to invade my lungs ( judging by my deep cough)so I hope the Bactrim holds it off.

Special, an outdoor kitchen, what fun! Our DS1 has one at his NJ home and we were shocked to see it at first. It's why DDIL calls it her "California home". After hearing that I decided to be happy that they are content to have the Cali style while not going that far away! It is quite the cool set up, and great for good weather entertaining poolside. Have fun designing!
Nance, you amaze me with your never ending kitchen creativity and productivity!

Kayak, I think I saw that baked apple rose recipe. Very cool.

Laurie, your weekend plans sound wonderful!
Better try to get some shut eye....have the kindergarteners tomorrow, and then need to pack for NH.....my foggy head is not very into planning, but maybe a trip to Traders will solve any food planning that I have neglected. If it were not for the big beach lobster fest (which DH has been looking forward to since the last one!), I would be very happy to stay put this weekend....I need to get my energy back. :/

Lacey, Soup! Buy boxes of stock and make yourself some soup in NH. I doubt it makes you healthy faster, but it sure is comforting.

I am off to retrieve my glasses while Mr. 02143 and Kid_02143 are off to the inspection. SOOOOOOO exciting!

    *susan*

  • Susan, fingers crossed on everything going great with the real estate purchase. Your excitement is contagious! Looking forward to the kitchen design.

Lacey, the lobster dinner on the beach sounds like the ultimate beach party to me. What a horrible time to get the crud. I hope you feel good enough to enjoy the wonderful food and good company.

Lacey--Neti Pot---Gypsy Cold Care tea from health food stores (they have a whole line of teas for whatever ails you, but I like this one when I am congested). REST.....and, if you do't want to make soup....Get someone to pick you up some Chinese won ton soup or sizzling rice. The broth in those are potent with colds for me.

Thanks everyone for the crud fighting advice! It will be a househole effort now that DH finally went to the doc too....he has started a Zpac. At leastbwe won't be spreading germs to others.

I went to my afternoon kindergarten class today, and before I arrived, the class had made applesauce. The lovely teacher offered me some saying how delicious it turned out. I almost ran out of the room! I'm sure there would be some incompatible germs swimming around in that delicious treat, which I politely declined. I have to get used to washing my hands as soon as I leave that setting...my immune system is just not as strong as in my "olden days".

Speaking of "olden days", we were going over the lyrics in our social skills song that we start each class with, and focusing on the word "respect". As we talked about respecting our earth as well as people and animals, the kids talked a lot about not littering. It reminded me, and I probably shocked them about how When I was a child, people would just throw wrappers, cans, (sometimes even a whole McDonald's bag of empty stuff!) etc. out of car windows as they drove, making for a very ugly trash filled highway. It is hard to even conceive of such gross behavior nowadays, accounting for the wide-eyed response from the kindergarteners! I told them that their parents probably never saw that but that their grandparents might have.

I am off to Trader's to pick up some easy to make stuff for the weekend, and probably something ready made for dinner here. We do like that Greek chicken with kalamata olives and orzo. I can probably muster enough energy to make a salad to go with it.

Lacey - when I was in California and we were working on the garage we had Trader Joe's butternut squash risotto and some meatballs - I think they were Italian style - yummy combo and easy to heat up. Might be good while you're feeling less than.

susan - you're not going to believe this - we got an offer on the condo this afternoon! So apparently we are linked in regards to real estate. It is lower than we would like (most likely because the agent knows our bottom line, which is unfortunate) but it is an "as is" offer - no inspection needed, end of the month close. Hope all went smoothly for you today

For lunch today, we had cubanos made with the leftover roast pork. Delish! Although I think that is DH's favorite sandwich, he requested grilled hamburgers for dinner. We had those on a brioche bun, some oven roasted potatoes and two beautiful sliced brandywines from the garden. Simple but quite satisfying.

Tomorrow we pick up the last of this year's free range chickens from the Amish meat guy. I have a piece of brisket marinating in a mixture of fresh tomato juice, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, cardamom and an inordinate amount of black pepper, so that will be tomorrow nights dinner but I think Sunday will be a roasted half chicken.

Wishing you Susan and SpecialK, successful real estate ventures!

Special, Good real estate karma all around! I have written up our response to the inspection report. I believe that the Sellers have already agreed to take care of the areas of concern, and then we will deal with the rest of the items over time. I just focused on the health and safety issues [i.e. un-permitted work not done to code.] I fully expect the fact that we have asked for all the electrical work to be done with a permit will slow down our closing date. Well worth the delay.

Nance, cubanos. Oh yum! I have stopped ordering these delicious sandwiches since I always seem to get such inferior pork. I just dream about them now. :-)

Dinner last night was a leftover leg of lamb shepards pie I had stashed in the freezer. It was totally and completely mediocre. I knew it would be, but I just hated to throw out cooked leg of lamb and so I thought that I could repurpose. Yes, I can repurpose, but not this way! The great thing about food is, today is a new day, and we can start all over again. Every single day we have to eat.

    YaY Susan

Tonight I'm branching out and making a stew with chickpeas, garam masala, onions, tomatoes, chickpeas, cilantro and a few other spices.

Fish has become a ridiculously expensive habit so I have to cut waaaay back due to the house repair situation. and wanting a car big enough to pull a mini trailer, a mini trailer, to retire in one year,(peace, love and Social Security to those who were hippies) go to Educator, grandbaby hoping for starting this month-DD would shoot me if she knew I said this- and whatever else my greedy mind dreams up.

    Still living in cabin though

I have been practicing the same etude for one MONTH and my teacher will not let me move on until the high screechy pinky finger on the E string in third position etc is perfect. now am working on the minor scales. It's kind of fun, then will focus on vibrato. I have been honored to be deemed "semi-professional" by the King of Scales and Etudes, MR. Andy AKA the big PIA.

I'm going to a country fair this weekend, woohoo!

    and the Pronk Fest

Arrived in NH around 1PM along with the expected rain. I had not anticipated the temp to be 43 degrees (brrrr) since it was in the 60's at home. So while DH dealt with the wood delivery guy, I did my girl scout thing and got the stove going. Sometimes when it's not real cold it takes forever to get a good burn going, but at this point it looks (and feels!) great. I was surprised to see that any of the flowers I left in large pots are absolutely beautiful....especially the impatiens which I didn't plant until August.

I brought two large tomatoes from home which are just begging to be attached to a BLT, so that is what we will have tonight.....mainly b/c DH was immediately willing to drive to the nearest open store to buy the "B". We'll probably have soup and salad, too.

Another bad night of sleep....so annoying to be constantly congested. Maybe I should try Musinex at night, but am loathe to injest any more meds!

Random question....has anyone ever made that "two ingredient" recipe for pumpkin brownies? I'd love to try it since it is probably the easiest thing ever, but wonder if it is really edible! I would not want to bring a "gross" dessert to the lobster fest.image

Here's what's keeping us warm here....

Today I decided to make meatballs and Rao's recipe for marinara, so that was dinner. In addition to having enough to freeze, I have some to take to my dad tomorrow. I'll stick the marinating brisket in the slow cooker while we're gone tomorrow. The house should smell pretty good when we get home.

Your fire looks very inviting Lacey. It's going to be quite chilly here tonight too -- 43 or so. We really have to think about bringing the plants in. It's such a hassle to go through them thoroughly to make sure we don't bring any tree frogs in. It seems we always miss at least one.

Tonight I let Chef José make our dinner. I had a modest bowl of tortilla soup and ordered the guacamole. What a mistake. This was at least two avocados, so there was absolutely no way I could even begin to eat this much. Mr. 02143 ordered the carnitas plate which was huge tonight. He brought a chunk of the pork home, at least 4"x4"x4". I will turn that into something delicious tomorrow.

It rained hard here today starting at around 2pm. On and off since then. Must be Fall.

    *susan*

p.s. Sellers are trying to contact a plumber about part of our inspection report. Won't know anything more until tomorrow.

  • Good simple dinner last night. Ground chuck, zucchini, diced tomatoes with chilis, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, s & p cooked into a skillet dish. Served over rice in a bowl. Chopped salad of romaine, tomato, yellow bell pepper, cucumber, avocado and diced marinated peppers and kalamata olives (from olive bar at Fresh Market) with Hellman's Light and white balsamic dressing.

I have not been cooking for the last several days. On Thurs I had a MOHS procedure done on my right shin for a recurrent skin cancer and was instructed not to stand. So, I stopped on the way home and picked up take-out for all of us. Last night we went out for my birthday - I was not hungry but the fam was, and we went to a burger/brews place which was cute, but freezing and loud inside. DH and DD had good looking burgers, I had a side salad that was absolutely missable. DD mentioned to the server that it was my birthday and this is one of those places where they sing, clap and bring you a flaming brownie. Um, no - not happening, so I made sure to reiterate to the server that she should cancel the knowledge that it was my birthday, lol! The outdoor kitchen plan is coming together, we have found the contractor, he came up with some awesome ideas and we like his price and it is ending up in a different, but better, configuration that we originally planned. He will be ready to start soon, and it will take a week or so. Thanks to Susan's real estate karma it is looking like we have a solid offer on the condo, with an all cash closing on Nov. 2 - yay! It has been for sale for over a year, so we are hopeful that we can see the light at the end of this long tunnel.

More birthday wishes to you, Special. and I promuse not to sing or clap....or bring you one of those pumpkin brownies I am threatening to make! ;). Hope you are taking it easy and healing well from the procedure.

May the current real estate karma continue!

Thanks for the b-day wishes! I am a low key b-day girl, love other people's b-days, and I am happy to be here, but don't like too much attention. I am also not a big Valentine's Day or Mother's Day person either.

  • More belated birthday good wishes to SpecialK! Can't wait to see the outdoor kitchen.

Went to the Covington Farmers' Market today. Bought a long skinny loaf of whole wheat ciabatta, green beans and a bundle of kale. This farmers' mkt has really expanded and is well attended. A lot of the venders are selling their own ready-to-eat food like hummus and goodness knows what else. Some people go there to eat and drink and socialize..

Not on subject, I stopped at Hobby Lobby for a spool of thread. $4.54 for thread!!!

    Happy Birthday SpecialK!

Lacey, this is the PERFECT weather for your lobster fest. Couldn't be more beautiful here today. No wind, sunny, almost with a warm edge.

Our karma is still on hold as we wait for the sellers. Long weekends are hard to find a tradesperson to review potential repairs. The waiting is making all of us a bit nuts. Tonight we will grill up the last of the lamb loin chops. While pawing around in the freezer I discovered two boxes of lamb shoulder chops! How had I forgotten about my shoulder chops? I will try working through them, but they do need to be braised. I have a wonderful Provencal daube and some equally wonderful Indian dishes that i love to make with this cut. Since dinner is so easy to make tonight, I will start a beef stew with the boneless short ribs or steak tips as we call them in New England for tomorrow. I think the kid needs a bit more protein as "peanut" is beginning to grow pretty fast. After we feast tomorrow, I will let her package some up for their dinners this week.

Carole, it is interesting how the farmer's markets are featuring more vendors with home made products....we bought a vegan dip at a local fm (mostly chopped veggies with considerable spice as I recall) that the vendor said was a recipe his mother developed to help him during his cancer treatment. I can't for the life of me recall the name of it... but have one in my freezer at home. Then at our town farmer's market, a nearby restaurant has started to sell lobster rolls, which sell out in a matter of minutes! We have never made it there early enough to buy any...and keep hearing how wonderful they are.

Susan, there are clear skies here now, but the temp is pretty chilly....tomorrow we are supposed to be in the sixties...perfect for the event! I see on Facebook that Laurie and crew are cooking a turkey (or large chicken) in a trash can. Never saw that method before, I guess since I am not a true camper
I am thinking about your real estate angst as I sit here listening to our thirty something son and his childhood friend (lake friend who drove up with him and enjoyed a round of golf on the way) trying to figure out where they can afford to buy their respective condos/houses in this ridiculous market. DS2 even made a comment that he might be driven to move to the suburbs. Oh the horror!

Well, I've had enough football for the moment, so I am going to make those pumpkin brownies....and then I will give the feedback! ;)

Cool weather here--44 degrees this a.m. and high in the low 60's. sunny outside though and really pretty.

Fast food for lunch and probably soup /salad for dinner. Not hungry at all, just would like to go to bed.

I feel like I could hibernate for a long while, My aunt who has been here a month with my Dad goes home on Thursday and I will be back on tht treadmill again. She told me today she thinks it is unsafe for him to be alone, but apparently she isn't willing to try to discuss it with him. We see his primary care doctor in two weeks. to see what he has to say about Carpal tunnel surgery on a 88 year old diabetic.......I am praying that there isn't a surgeon in town who would agree to it.

  • Eggplant hot dish for dinner. My usual eggplant casserole with slices of eggplant brushed with olive oil and browned in a nonstick griddle. Layered with home-made tomato sauce with green onion sausage and grated Italian cheese. Not parmesan. The name will come to me.

No fresh garlic to cook with the kale! Diced up a shallot and sautéed with pepper flakes in olive oil. Sprinkled in some balsamic flavored rice vinegar after the kale had wilted. .

Salad will be cucumber, tomato and avocado.

  • Happy (late) Birthday, SpecialK!

And, you are such a great cook, Carole!
