So...whats for dinner?

Well it's 8pm and I've only had 5 or 6 groups of Halloween revelers - all little kids. Unfortunately too much candy still left - yup I caved in and bought more - but I'll turn off the light shortly. Not interested in the rowdy teens anymore.

Oh special - that is gorgeous. I don't think I can make it for dinner this week though. I may get details on the decking for my own porch once things settle down.

Lacey - so glad to hear about DS2s offer. I don't understand how the economics work for that generation, but as long as they're paying their own way, I don't feel entitled to complain too loudly. So my son & DGF got moved into their new place back in San Francisco - downsizing from 2400 in the burbs to 1150 for the opportunity to move where there is one hour less commute each way.

I woke up at 4am with torrential rainstorms and couldn't go back to sleep. So at 6am I ate my leftover piece of pepperoni & mushroom pizza - cold at that. The newspaper wasn't here due to the storms & it was pitch black, so I went back to bed & slept from 8-10am. For lunch I had 3 slices of leftover sushi - California Roll - that I picked up for lunch in the medical center when I had my port flush earlier this week. Tonight I'm considering leftovers - black beans, rice already cooked, half an avocado, Hatch green chili salsa - or maybe Asian sweet chili sauce instead. I need to work on that loaf of Rosemary/Potato bread too before it starts to mold. I remember my Mom's bread sitting out on cupboards for days, but then it wasn't 80 degrees in Northern California either.

Eric - meant to say earlier, I've always been a fan of Airborne before, during & after a flight. It's kept me from many a cold. But hopefully you are home safe from the pertussis convention. I'm corresponding w/my brother about a Grand Canyon trip in the spring so maybe I'll get to meet you all.

Pushing the envelope folks - and planning 3 trips in 2016. Got to make up for the 4-5 years w/no trips further than a 2 hours drive & convince my mind forget about BC. The first recurrence was 2 years out. Next year will be 2 years again, so...

Made DH hand out the candy this year. He sat outside with a fan, DD's Dios de la Muerte skull Jack 'O Lantern. He had his iPad with a football game on, lol!

The undercounter lighting is RF, controlled by remote - there are 8 colors, you can make them fade or flash. It is pretty high tech! It looks really pretty with the pool light on too

Bedo - we were cross posting. So was it the Ruby slippers? Or Ruby getting ready to go to town? Horses of a different color for sure. Glad you had fun.

    Hi ChiSandy!

On the flight home, the Southwest Airlines crew (I've always found them to have a sense of humor) had the plane's interior decorated for Halloween. When I went to use the lavatory, I burst out laughing. They had some what looked like crime scene tape, but was orange and said, "Enter...if you dare".........taped to the lavatory door. And at one of the airports' baggage claim section was a skeleton with a baggage claim ticket in its hand. There was even a flight attendant dressed up like a piece of bacon with an unlit cigarette...."Smoked Bacon".

    For what it's worth, I don't eat butter with a spoon. I use a fork. :-)

Off to do my travel paperwork. The lady that does the paperwork surrounding the trip expenses does us a favor by completing all she can for us, so I make it a priority to return her favor by getting my part done within 12-18 hours of getting home. This was a simple trip, so it won't take too long.

We are back! I will try to write up a food diary later. In the morning, I go and sit in the new house while it is measured. I am going to sit in rooms and envision what they will become. I can't believe that we will be buying this sweet spot on Friday.

That is sweet, Susan! :) Really happy for you!

DS2 and DGF also seem so very happy with their pending purchase. Turns out it is in a better area of Savin Hill....closer to the water, and on a quiet street. He sounds so unambivalent and excited about this. Lists his place later this week...hopefully it will sell soon! Anything reasonably priced in Southie goes quickly.

And I am thinking that by now, Special's real estate transaction is complete.
Also happy that your DS is settled, Minus!

Made a great healthy dinner tonight...sort of a stovetop "baked" cod with tomatoes, onions, garlic and......sauteed kale served with orzo, feta cheese, and a delightful "salad bowl lettuce" (my favorite) simple salad dressed with Trader's olive oil/lemon juice dressing.

Since today was Farmer's Market, I bought more greens (fridge is sooo crowded) and a beautiful large eggplant which I am using right now to make ratatouille. This will be a great several night meal for me since DH has conference dinners three evenings this week. I may defeat that nasty scale after all...after our Tuesday trip to erbaluce! ;)

Can't wait to see your finished product pix, Special. I'm still amazed at the speed with which this is getting built!

lacey - closing is tomorrow on the condo - DH has to be in Palm Beach at 10 am.  The contractor is coming Tuesday to cut the deck tiles that need to be fitted.  After that is done we can move the furniture back and then all we need to do it paint the pool deck - DH got the cleaner and paint today.  We decided to have our master bath counters replaced by this same contractor so I have to go pick out stone tomorrow and they will be swapped out, with new sinks, at the end of the week!  This guy is speedy!  Yay for your DS and DGF and the new condo - hope his current place sells quickly - can he specify that he needs to stay in it until the new one is ready?

eric - the party we are having in two weeks is a retirement for the woman in DH's office who handles the travel vouchers - funny that you mentioned that!

Lacey: Somehow I don't remember a review of "Beautiful" or an erbaluce recap. I scrolled back, but maybe I'm nuts. Looking forward to a story about both.

Susan: It will be fun to hear about your imaginings as you sit & contemplate the new place - not to mention the upcoming food diary.

Special: Good luck w/the closing tomorrow. I know you're ready for that to be done. Neat that you're going to get the bathrooms done too.

You all are inspiring me. I've been putting off getting new windows for over a year so I researched this weekend. I have narrowed it down to two companies I'll call tomorrow and have them both out to quote this week.

I only see 2 or 3 movies per year, but went to see Intern this afternoon before it totally left the city. Funny movie w/Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway that really highlights the differences between the millennials & those of us who are "more mature". As a 70 year old retired widower, he goes to work as a senior "intern" for a 20 something tech company. His facial expressions are so comprehensive, he doesn't even need to talk to let you know what he's thinking. What a versatile actor.

I got home late last evening.

I love ratatouille. I put it on Pasta like a sauce, which probably pulls down the goodness of the meal somehow....HAHA she said with a wicked laugh.....

  • I don't love ratatouille and I think I tried making it twice. Before doing so, I read many recipes. Mine turned out "soupy" and I didn't like the texture of the eggplant.

Tonight we're having a chicken and artichoke heart casserole using a large chicken breast that I will cut into thick slices. I will use some baby bella mushrooms cooked in butter, a carton of home-made chicken broth and canned artichoke hearts. I looked up the recipe in Peg Bracken's I Hate to Cook Book and will use it as a guideline. Instead of flour for thickener I'll use zanthum gum and cut carbs. The recipe calls for a little sherry. I would rather have the skin on bone in chicken pieces but I had the chicken breast in the freezer. And the artichoke hearts in the pantry.

I couldn't resist buying a rotisserie chicken at Sam's Club. A bargain at $5. Nearly everybody leaves the store with one. I had a slice of breast with some goat cheese for lunch. The remainder is probably destined to become chicken salad.

Carole - oh my goodness. I haven't thought about Bracken's "I Hate To Cook" book in years. It was a staple when I was younger. Yum.

  • Minus, this is a new copy I ordered from Amazon several years ago when an rv fulltimer friend, Bill, mentioned that it is his one cookbook in the motorhome. He does most of the cooking for him and his wife. I had owned a copy years ago and gotten rid of it. The chicken artichoke mushroom dish last night was delicious. Our side was bok choy sautéed in butter. I wasn't hungry because of my mid afternoon snack of rotisserie chicken and goat cheese.

DH and I are going into New Orleans today for lunch with a woman we knew eons ago in St. Thomas when dh crewed on a sailing charter boat that she and her husband owned. We have not seen her in all these years. She and her companions are staying in a hotel on Camp St. not far from the streetcar tracks. We're planning to ride the streetcar with the three of them to Mandina's restaurant on Canal Street. It's a favorite of ours when we venture into the city.

In a little while dh and I are going to the gym. My second day in a row, Lacey! I wish our YMCA had a stretching class like the one you describe.

    Is anyone cooking and eating?

Carole, today sounds like a fun reunion and venture into the city! Looking forward to hearing about it.

Last night after the gym, we had a strange array of food items for dinner.....leftover kale bean soup, leftover fish from Sunday, green salad, and worried that we would need something to "fill us up", I baked an acorn squash.

Minus, you didn't miss a report.....erbaluce and "Beautiful" are tonight! We are looking forward to it to celebrate our 42nd.

Carole, why don't you ask your YMCA folks to start a stretching class? I would guess that they have a trainer who would try it on a trial basis....it is such a useful effort with some loyal followers in our group. And really helpful for seniors who want to keep those joints moving!

I broiled two big rib eyes on Sunday night with baby Yukon golds "smashed" with herbed goat cheese and some scallions, and steamed broccoli with lemon pepper.  I had leftover steak so DH had a generous romaine salad with steak on top and balsamic vinaigrette and I had a bit of steak with some of the potatoes for dinner last night.  DH closed on the condo yesterday, and then we met up as I was coming back from the granite yard to look at bathroom sinks.  Our outdoor kitchen contractor is putting new sinks and granite in our master bath on Friday.  The carpenter is cutting the deck tiles as I type so the flooring in the lanai should be done by the end of the day - yay!  Not sure what is for dinner tonight - I need to root around in the pantry and see if I can invent something.

Just realized I haven't been on here since April. Bad bad bad! Anyway, hubby has been squid jigging lately (a lot!). So we have oodles of squid in our freezer. I'm trying to find good ways to cook them other than the old bread and deep fry. Last night we had squid curry. I found a few recipes on the internet and kinda mushed them all together. It was tasty, but probably non-repeatable. :)

For lunch today is mulligatawny soup that I made from the remains of a rack of lamb dinner from a couple nights ago. (I often choose to make lamb simply so I can then make mulligatawny :) Then I'll have to break out of the Indian/Asian food groups and make a simple steak and vegie for tonight's dinner. Maybe cauliflower with cream sauce or some other sinful combo... :):)

Sorry I haven't been on much...

SpecialK - your outside kitchen is GORGEOUS. And whenever I hear the words "swimming pool" I get so jealous - especially so for people who live where they actually get to use it year round. Our daughter and husband have a swimming pool, but they don't keep it warm enough for me, so I don't go in - and, of course, it's all sealed up most of the year up here. We're probably not going anywhere this winter, as we are planning a trip to Europe in the spring - but I'm really going to miss warmth!!

Stuffed squid! There are as many ways to stuff squid as their are Spanish and Portuguese grandmothers. Here is one I found that uses Chourizo sausage, but I know people also use clams, sardines [fresh], or other squid with tentacles, etc. http://easyportugueserecipes.com/stuffed-squid-lul...

Since we returned, we have eaten easily. Pulled some marinara sauce and meatballs from the freezer one night. Another night I made pasta e fagiole soup. Tonight the magic freezer gave me chicken satay all ready to grill. Served with some Javanese pickles, a dipping sauce, a Malaysian sautéed cabbage and some Jasmine rice. Lots of Thai peppers in the pickles and sauce. My mouth is alive right now.

I am finally back on a deadline... no time to respond to all the postings. Been great to read though.

Glad to see all the Real Estate things going as planned! Happy for you all. Specialk that's gonna be so gorgeous. I love that outdoor kitchen.

It was raining lightly for Trick or Treat here so not many kids. About 50 or so. But since last year was 150 I have a lot of candy left over

Including a big bag of choc with Snickers, Twix, M & Ms etc. O ooh boy. LOL

Treated myself yo a new Witch costume this year. My purple on is pretty old. This one is actually warmer so it's better most years! LOL

So happy to hear the new baby news! So nice for all. Can't believe DGD1 will be a year old next month! Where did time go?

DH is closing out his sisters affairs in Montana but should be home this weekend. More things than he ecpected. He might have rented a trailer. He gave away so much too. Oh well. Her memorial will be this month up at the family farm during hunting season.

    Eric glad you're home.

I've missed this round of crud but had my share before my trip.everyone get better.

DH is still scheduled to move to Florida in January although it's been changed so many times i m really not sure! :) Juneau Beach . I'm gonna come for a long visit when I can't stand the snow anymore! LOL

DH wanted to go out for a late dinner (and the late-night restaurant around here is just meh). But tonight was the second of three unseasonably warm days & evenings (we’re gonna get the big chill come Thurs. night), so I vowed I’d fire up the gas grill out on the deck. Dinner was a couple of petite American Wagyu ribeye filets (I couldn’t even finish mine!) from our freezer (the last of our shipment from Snake River Farms meat club), shiitake mushrooms sauteed in butter, beef juices and Burgundy (Haute Cotes de Beaune I’d opened a few nights ago), pan-seared Brussels sprouts finished with truffle salt & balsamic vinegar, Dr. Prager’s broccoli latkes, and 3 oz. of said Burgundy. First beef I’ve had in a week. For dessert, passionfruit meringue pie from Hoosier Mama.

We had a slow Halloween compared to years past, but more kids than last year’s gale-force sleety nightmare. Based on one piece of candy per kid, I counted 670. The official neighborhood count was 1500. Our neighborhood is roughly 15 sq. blocks. Obviously, many of the trick-or-treaters were from outside the ‘hood because of Edgewater Glen’s reputation for Halloween hospitality--we kept seeing vans & SUVs pulling up and disgorging several kids at a time. We have almost 2 lb. of leftover candy, which none of us in this house need (or even like very much because we’re dark-chocolate fiends), so we’re gonna take it over to the nearest armory to be sent to our troops.

  • Sandy, goodness, that's a lot of trick or treaters! We had an interesting Halloween experience. We had dinner with a couple at one of the restaurants in our club and afterwards followed the couple to the home of one of their sons, who is a computer geek. He had created a large flying saucer on his front lawn using programmed LED lights and an old satellite dish turned upside down. Some kind of machine sent out smoke to mock take-off. The son was dressed in a white Star Wars suit that looked like the real thing. He'd ordered it online. Star Wars music was playing. It was quite incredible. Now I can't wait to see his Christmas decorations, which I'm told are really something to see.

The meeting with the old friend we knew in St. Thomas was fun and very interesting. Kitty is an accomplished sailor and has sailed around the world on yachts. Now she lives in NC. She was in NO with her sister, who has a PH D in nuclear medicine, was a college professor and then employed by NIH. What a brainy woman! The sister's husband was also along on the trip and he's an inventor. We never ran out of things to talk about as we rode the streetcar on Canal Street to Mandina's restaurant and then took it back up Canal to the Westin hotel, whose lobby on the 11th floor offers a fabulous view of the MS river. There's a bar so you can have a beer or glass of wine and watch the ships pass and the tugs push barges on the mighty MS. We always take visitors there. Nice bathrooms, too!

Moon, how nice that you have a getaway place in FL when you get tired of cold and snow. It is hard to believe your GD # 1 is already a year old.

Susan, the magic freezer didn't get filled with magic on its own. You're the food magician.

Special, I'm waiting for the first food report from the wonderful outdoor kitchen.

    Hello,

It's 5 o'clock and I still haven't figured out tonight's dinner, but I did want to stop by and let you all to know how much I enjoy this thread! I've been checking it daily for about 4 weeks and have so many new ideas from your posts. My DH and kiddos are enjoying my renewed interest in planning and preparing dinner. Have a lovely evening!

DaisyQ - glad you've joined us. We'll look forward to getting to know you better. I'm the oddball who doesn't have to cook for anyone, so I eat weird combinations at strange hours. Today I bought a rotisserie chicken at Costco. I came home & ate the wings and the drumsticks for dunch and stripped the rest. There's a good portion in the fridge for the rest of the week and two packages in the freezer. Unfortunately I didn't give away enough of the Halloween Milky Way bites, so I've been eating 2 or 3 a day. WHew - thank goodness they're gone now.

I HATE that is gets dark so early. Bitch, bitch, bitch.

Minus I hate it when it gets dark early too. Andwhy does daylight have to come so early? I eat like you do most of the time, and one carry out meal is a 1/2 week ususally.....I used to say I was going to write a book about how long it takes a single woman to eat a jar of spaghetti sauce....HA

The wood flooring is finally done in the lanai, now I have sawdust on the new grill.  Tomorrow I will clean that up, and we are putting the furniture back tonight and the TV back in the armoire.  DH will paint the pool deck by the end of the weekend and we will be done - yay!  I will post a pic of the finished floor in the daylight tomorrow.

Tonight is beef soft tacos on whole wheat tortillas, and some Spanish rice.

How exciting for you to be close to using your new outdoor kitchen, Special! Looking forward to the pics...

So before I forget what we had, I'd better report on the erbaluce anniversary dinner.

We had an early reservation since we had a bit of a walk afterwards to the theatre where we saw "Beautiful" (It was great to hear all the Carole King music!). The menu and specials were about 50% different than what we had, Minus and Susan.

There was no mackerel, so DH did not get his mackerel appetizer, and while I was ordering an escarole and arugula salad for us to share, DH forgot to order his hoped for razor clams appetizer. But we did try the appetizer of the wild boar ragu over pappardelle (and planning ahead, I brought a small cooler with an ice pack which I left in the car). We brought half of the order home. :) It was as good as when you had it, Susan. There were two other items featuring wild boar...a shoulder, and I believe, a stew.

They featured a lot of lemon (and some meyer lemon) flavored sauces, and my fluke entree was surrounded by a delightful spicy lemon sauce, along with yellow and red peppers, escarole and white lima beans (their signature?). The fluke was lovely, perfectly prepared and flavorful with the integrated accompaniments. Yum! And it was really "virtuous" in terms of calories. :) Of course, virtuous dining was not really my intent, and I was not able to resist their wonderful, perfectly textured breads served with the white bean dip surrounded by the most aromatic olive oil. Wow! Was that tasty!

DH selected (on my recommendation after seing Minus' last month) the lobster special, which he enjoyed very much. For dessert, DH had the lemon panna cotta with white and red raspberries (which we had, eh?), and I had the apple crostata with an almond paste, accompanied by a small spiced apple. We each had a glass of prosecco (that's about all I could have and stay awake for the performance. Overall, it was a lovely meal, great service, and the dining room was much calmer than when we were there....no large, loud tables. Mainly business associates on an early Tuesday evening.

Tonight, I had a tiny taste of the pappardelle, and then my intended dinner....a bowl of re-heated ratatoille with two poached eggs on top. I am really into this poached egg/vegetable combo! And I do love it when I am on my own for dinner (sorry, DH!) Minimalist inventions, I would call them. ;) I may have the same thing tomorrow since DH has another conference dinner then, too.

Minus, I put most of my snickers snack bars in the freezer which requires a bit more work to eat them! ;)

    Welcome, ChiSandy and DaisyQ!

Carole, your visit sounded delightful, and your friends, so interesting! You are motivating me to make a visit to NO to do that touring trip.

Our weather has been so delightful these past few days...and tomorrow maybe mid 70's. WOW! I was thinking this afternoon as we were doing a bit of window and screen washing how incredibly grateful we New Englanders become for any warm sunny days after Nov 1st!!
