Oh my, Susan, that is one beautiful bread loaf! Be still my salivary glands!! I think you and Nance should have a "bake off" and mail us the products to judge.....hee hee. ;)

Speaking of making baked goods, the oddest serendipity occurred yesterday at the Haitian food ingathering tea. The hostesses gave out boxes of Welch Cake Mix (and a few packs of already done cakes). I was the sole person who knew what they were...and was delighted to take home one of each item. It seems that the hostess was contacted by the bakery owner after she found a copy of their invite to the tea in the Kinko's copy machine. So She contacted the hostess, told her about her new bakery, and asked her to give out these products to their guests. Yay! Now mind you, I am initially not as enthralled with these as I am those sold at Volante Farms....BUT, I scored a pack of completed pineapple/coconut cakes and they are interesting. My mix is cranberry.

I have never heard of a Welsh Cake. Is this similar? http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/welsh-cakes... And, does this mean the bakery is making mixes?

Dinner tonight will be crudites, cheeses & charcuterie, accompanying a Beaujolais tasting (Nouveau & “Cru"). Fortunately, all attendees are serious oenophiles, so nobody will give me the fish-eye for pouring out or discreetly spitting. Mustn’t exceed 6 oz. if I want to stay safe. Nonetheless, I’m Uber-ing it downtown rather than driving/valet parking. I’ve cut so far back on wine I notice it takes very little to affect me now!

Susan/Lacey, that is the recipe I use.

Dinner tonight is the brined thick pork chops with fennel, roasted sweet potatoes and some fresh applesauce.

I'm afraid I would have to concede the bake off. I'm not worthy :)

So my Welsh Cake people, is this a breakfast food? How sweet are they without the cinnamon sugar? How long do they last before getting wildly stale? I am thinking that this might be a nice variation for our Sunday breakfast-at-noon.

Dinner was the salmon with pasta and peas. Bread was fine, but neither of us was particularly focused on the food. Blood markers are back and they are significantly up. Never a good sign. At Monday's onc meeting, I will be scheduled for a scan quickly. Argh!

Chisandy Oui! cracher comme vous voulez, mais je ne l'ai jamais trouvé la bière pour être nocif après quatre ans. I am looking at an apartment with on street parking only and am worried about snowstorms in New England. I am not ready for uber or buses yet as I have a minor commute. I hope you enjoy yourself!

Susan that bread looks great. I cannot bake

I have never heard of Welsh Cake.

Seared scallops for dinner, the BIG ONES

Minor rant coming please ignore if you want.

I have a sign on my office door "Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00" ( I have to be there from 7-4 so that hour off gives me eight hours, and I usually use my lunch hour to do paperwork. People see me chowing down on mac and cheese or whatever through the little window and wave. I don't look up, I pretend I don't see them Then they knock softly then louder. I still ignore, then they try to come in through the locked door, Finally I *sigh* get up still chewing and ask what it is, it is always something that does not have to be taken care of during my lunch. On my last 5 days off I have been contacted at my home phone and personal email about silly things that are not an emergency and can wait until I get back.

I am thinking "Zombies" as in Zombies who follow you everywhere. Zombies that you can never escape from and never get to have alone time. I finally sent out an email stating that if I am truly on call, I want the typical 1/2 hourly rate or don't contact me.

I asked maintenance for a curtain to put up on the window during my "lunch"

I'll let you know if I have a job on Monday,

Haha They won't fire me, they'll just wonder "why is it a problem for her"

    End of rant.

Susan, we eat them for breakfast and sometimes I have one later in the day (re warmed) with coffee or tea. They are reminiscent of scones but different. I sometimes reduce the amount of sugar and I don't usually sprinkle the cinnamon sugar on them. Like scones, they stale rather quickly but rewarm pretty well. I usually freeze most of them and take them out as we want them. They are delicious with butter. I think Lacey said the ones she gets are similar to a pancake but mine are not quite like that. I believe I posted a picture of a batch a while back.

Bedo, perhaps you should change your sign to "Keep Out". I had the same problem when I was working. I had a do not disturb sign that people would ignore by saying "you don't mean me, right?" I was fortunate enough to have an assistant to run interference when I needed her to.

Susan, I hope the markers are something insignificant.

Oh, your version looks very much like an English muffin! Now I have to decide what fruit I might include... currents, apricots, raisins.... or perhaps ginger and lemon. Hmmm.... lemon might not be wonderful with eggs.... thoughts on best mixins'?

So here is the website for the bakery that makes the Welsh cakes. Yes, they are more pancake like than your more muffin looking ones, Nance. And it turns out that thisnplace is who makes the ones at Volantes. I should have realized that there are few folks making these....and their marketing effort has a lot to do with, "What is a Welsh Cake?"

    http://copperkettlebakery.com

Susan, I think your fam might enjoy either kind for a change at breakfast! Sorry to learn about your blood work. Another friend of mine just wrote to say that her levels have soared, after being NED following very long treatment five years ago for uterine cancer. Maybe the moon is just void of course....I hope!

Anyway, I have had a bizarre array of food items tonight....of course a briefly nuked pineapple/coconut Welsh Cake (really good when warm!), an apple, a bit of leftover roasted chicken )before I popped the remains in the crock pot), and a few teaspoons of peanut butter with apricot jam. I was just way too tired to make anything....but will make soup tomorrow since the stock will be calling to me.

bedo - you need a curtain and a sign that says you will return at 1 pm, so maybe nobody will think you are actually there.

susan - crossing fingers that the markers are inflammation or something innocuous.

Tonight was old school open faced roast beef on toast with mashed potatoes and beef gravy, with some baby peas. Yummy comfort food

Bedo...I go over to a nearby park to eat...and leave my cell phone in the car. If you want, I have a picture of one of my "fire for qualification" pistol targets that would probably fit quite nicely in the little window. :-)

Susan, that sucks..the marker numbers going up. I hope this is a case of where the markers don't mean much.

Lacey is right, that is a beautiful bread. The not quite deep enough cuts made a neat looking pattern..I like it. You got me to get my sourdough starter out of the refrigerator...now to wake it up and feed it so I can make bread this weekend. and also keep it ready for making sourdough rolls for Thanksgiving...thank you for the inspiration.

When I make muffins I'll add both raisins and chopped apricots to the mix.

Special.. I sit in two worlds with acronyms and I have to often consider the context when deciding what meaning to assign to the TLA (three letter acronym). :-)

Sharon is getting a cold, so I went over to the store to get real Sudafed for her and I completely forgot about the chorizo (spicy sausage) on the stove. Amazingly enough, it still tasted good even though it was grossly over cooked.

Susan - sucks about the markers. i too hope it's a spurious reading. We'll be with you in spirit Monday. The bread looks marvelous. I gained 5 lbs just looking at it. Nance & Lacey - Welsh cakes sound good. Eric - sorry to hear Sharon has caught that darn cold. Hope it doesn't last and you & DD are able to avoid sharing it. Special - open faced roast beef reminds me of my Dad. That was one of his favorites. Bedo - how about taking a towel and some blue painter's tape and covering the window yourself? Altho I like Red's execution sign idea.

Went to marvelous production of Phantom of the Opera this afternoon. My SIL decided we needed to sit in the orchestra. We were right behind where the chandelier descends. Eek. The new sets & staging directions since the anniversary make it a totally new experience. Gorgeous voices.

Dinner after the show was at Cafe Ginger - an Asian fusion restaurant. Their appetizers & sushi have happy hour prices from 5-6:30. Grazed on spring rolls, edamame, crab puffs, spicy fried calamari, shrimp tempura, chicken Yakitori, etc. Prices are $2-5 per plate (like 6 excellent crab puffs for $3.00) and I was full before we could think about a main course.

Playing Chickenfoot tomorrow. My answer to keeping my brain alert since I don't do Sudoku.

Bedo, thanks for the encouragement. Hope your experience with 4 yrs of beer being ok translates as well to wine, since although I like beer, any decent-tasting ones are way too carby for me. If I have to ration my alcohol, I'm not drinking anything I don't love. (That's a general rule for whatever goes into my mouth--if the only thing available at lunchtime is PB & J on white bread--or a hard-boiled egg--I think I'll wait! Unfortunately, since my diagnosis I have found way too many things that I love to eat that are no damn good for me......but damn, they're good)!

Oh, and only one guy tonight spat--and he was a pompous jerk. I simply sipped and then poured out. All in all, it added up to about 6 oz. Glad I found a cab waiting outside the restaurant!

  • Read, read, read... Just caught up with a couple of days of posts. Thanks for translation of COM. I guessed it was some expensive organic brand! Also don't have a clue what sort of event Lacey and dh attended. Unlike Minus, I didn't stop and google it. Susan, it seems a crime to make that bread and then make it stale for dressing. Glad your new mixer is a great addition to your kitchen. HOPING the higher numbers aren't significant.

Mental responses to everyone's posts. No noteworthy cooking here. Minus, I envy you the freedom to cook a pork roast on Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for family in my life but I hate these big obligatory Norman Rockwell holidays. We're headed to IL to a nephew's new house for the Big Bird meal. Now the Pig Pickup Somewhere in Texas has been shifted to the weekend after Thanksgiving so I'm wishing I had never committed to buying the pig. The transaction has become a logistical headache.

    Grumble, grumble, mutiny, mutiny.

It's another beautiful day in south Louisiana.

Got to get to grocery today--they are saying rain turning to snow and keep upping the accumulation by mid day romorrow. First they said 1-3 and now the map shows us in 4-6. Saying areas north of here cold go 8 inches or higher.....And of course, tomorrow was a huge craft sale at the highschool, the Thanksgiving Farmers Market, plus a few open houses I wanted to go to..

Dad gets his stitches out of his neck (basal cell carcinoma removed) this afternoon. Monday I have an apt with the RO as m my MO thought in Oct that my boob pain was perhaps from the radiation.......I just wish they would order a PETSCAN so I could stop stressing. Mammo is set for Dec 15th.

Susan I am crossing everything (fingers, eyes, toes) that your markers are just a blip and nothing more. Your bread looked so good. I marvel how you do all you do with everything on your plate and work on top of that.....AMAZING LADY!!!!

I'm sorry not to have explained The Moth more thoughtfully. Since I don't have time now, either, below is a good explanation...from the producers of it. Carole, I would think that you would really appreciate listening to some of the selected stories on NPR. DH and I particularly enjoy listening to them all summer long while having our late dinner on the lakehouse porch. He streams them somehow from his Ipad....I am so computer incompetent, I don't know how....just get to enjoy them. :)

    http://themoth.org/about

Trying to get some things done around here today...the overnight stock is rich and wonderful looking....soup making is next.

I thought I'd spend the whole weekend getting some sewing done, and cleaning the dining (sewing) room out for next week....but....DH decided that we should try to get tickets to the ND/BC game tomorrow night at Fenway Park (for those of you in other parts of the country, that is the classic old baseball stadium for the Red Sox). This is a rare and special event....and DH has been so enamored of ND football(my familiy's school) since we trekked out there last month. So, much as I worry about the high 30's forecast, I agreed, and we just spent a chunk of our kids' inheritance to get seats for it. Of course DS2 was totally happy for us to be so pleasure oriented. Gotta love it!

Real Estate update....DS2 also told us that the P and S for his condo is all set, and he closes it on Dec 22nd. They don't move into the new one until Jan 5th. Sure hope the contractors are finished on time! They will be "addressless" between those dates, and will be here for a bit, (more him than her as she is heading to her family for the holidays), and with friends in Southie. Hoping that all works out.

So, I'd better get down to some sewing and soup making as the afternoon moves along.....if the soup is done, it will be supper.

Oh, and Susan, ha ha, we are certainly "cool" if you consider that being the only old folks in the jammed room of hopeful young bright Moth storytellers. I figure the young 'ens must think that we (and our friends who go with us)are a storyteller's parents. Oh well...keeps our minds young! I also think that it must be a very different audience depending on the event locale. Hvd Sq certainly makes it a "camp" experience! Would be interesting to go to the Moth Grand Slam in Boston.

Curve Ball!!!! Contractor called today [the Great Sergio] and his schedule has changed. Instead of starting in 10-13 weeks, he wants to start tomorrow morning! He then gave me his labor/sub contractor quote, and it is beyond reasonable. I said "yes." Demo starts tomorrow! So, to explain what this means.... I, the procurer of all things kitchen & bath, will have to have materials ready to go about 13 weeks before I expected. Finding cabinets for the kitchen and tile for the baths, ordering, and have them delivered is now going to be a crash course!

My son in laws grandfather died this morning. He has been getting chemo for a recurrent cancer, but was doing well [we all thought.] Had some trouble last night, went to the hospital, and died. Needless to say, we have some very sad room-mates today.

Lacey, I suspected you would find your way to Fenway for that game. I might have been disappointed if you hadn't been in the stands. That is a very ambitious schedule for your kids.... when has a Boston area contractor EVER been on schedule? That time of year they might be able to secure a sublet from someone who goes "away" for the holidays.

Had 15th out of 16 rad treatments today. Stopped into Pastoral in Andersonville to load up on Beaujolais Nouveau (Domaine Dupeuble), cheeses and charcuterie to bring to a friend’s annual Sunday-before-Thanksgiving brunch, plus a few little cheese-ends for myself as well as a whole-grain seed baguette. Then visited my friend in NW Memorial--she’s feeling better, but will still go into the hospice unit at the Clare assisted living center in Streeterville. Uber’ed it down there; briefly considered stopping at Au Bon Pain in the lobby for onion soup but decided to Uber it back home before the snow hit (because of surge pricing it was almost as pricey as a cab, but the cars are always new and clean and the drivers good to talk to and you don’t have to pull out a credit card or cash--you even set your tip in advance when you set up your account). Made it to my front door just as the first flakes began to fall--we’ve got over an inch of heavy wet stuff already and even here by the lakefront they’re now predicting 5-6” (plus perhaps later on tomorrow some of the dreaded “lake enhancement” that in their charming fashion they can’t estimate how much). Good thing we have a neighbor with a snowblower to keep us from getting fined for not clearing our sidewalk--but it’s up to us to clear off our stairs, deck and a path to the garage.

In lazy-chef mode again tonight: nuked Buffalo wings, made some blue cheese dressing and hacked up some celery to dip. Afterwards, a slice of that baguette with a ripe Minnesota (!) camembert. Not gonna crack any of that Beaujolais till DH makes it safely home from the SW Side. Gonna have a cup of herb tea before I go out there and sweep the steps & sprinkle pet-safe ice melt--don’t want the bunny rabbits, neighborhood coyote and people’s pooches to get burned paws. Tomorrow will be a nest-and-burrow day....sleeping in!

My condolences to your DSIL, Susan. Did she happen to be a more nurturing family member for him? That would make loss of her extra hard.

Chi, so sorry that you are already in snowclearing mode. Some friends are flying out there in the morning and are not looking forward to facing snow yet. It was clear and pretty warm here today. When we were visiting Chicago several weeks back, I was interested to see how that city has reconciled the issues between Uber and the cabbies. Taxi drivers can also drive for Uber, and our driver to the airport was very pleased to wear both hats. Not sure why that can't seem to be a resolution in Boston, where there is a lot of tension between the two groups. My local city dwelling son uses Uber all the time and loves the conveniences you mention.

I am fretting about whether I can take my purse to the game tomorrow, since the mayor got on the news saying only clear plastic bags would be allowed into Fenway Park. Really??!! Must I stuff my "essentials" in a multi pocketed coat? Now there is a good start up business for an enterprising soul...clear handbags that pass the security standards at sporting events, concerts, airports, etc.

On our late afternoon walk, we picked up lamb for grilled burgers (thanks for the inspiration, Carole!) that I laced with fresh garlic, red onion, feta and rosemary powder. They were really good, and I even skipped the roll. Made a garden salad as side. Tomorrow evening we'll eat out on the way to the game.

ChiSandy: (if you're online in the next twenty-four hours) How's the Pastoral in Andersonville? DH and I are in Chicago today/tomorrow and are always looking for something to do between checking out of the hotel and catching our train--trip to one of the Pastoral branches might be in order.

To make this at least moderately list-oriented: we'd probably have one of their sandwiches for dinner on the train home.

  • Thanks for the link explaining the Moth storytelling, Lacey. We listen to NPR but have not heard any mention of Moth programming.

We're headed to suburban Chicago on Tues. Sure hope there's no snow during our travel. One year we were travelling to Decatur, IL, and had to stop at a hotel in St. Louis area, just three hours from our destination. The snow was falling and the highway was icy. In those days we made the 13 hour trip in one day.

Yesterday afternoon I was wracking my brain trying to answer the What's For Dinner? question when I remembered the remaining eggplant parmesan dish in the freezer. It was easy and delicious with a romaine salad.

Tonight is the Abita Opry so a dinner meal will have to be early.

Today is election day in Louisiana. Now the phone can stop ringing and the countless tv ads will disappear. This has been an ugly battle for governor with attack ads by both of the run-off candidates.

Susan, good luck with putting the condo re-do on Full Speed Ahead.

Special's busy day stew is in the crockpot, and I am eating an egg sandwich for breakfast at 10:27 woke up to snow, and it is still coming down. The first snow is pretty, but I wanted to go to a bunch of stuff today and now I am afraid of falling and rebreaking the wrist.....CRAP this feeling better dissipate in a hurry as it will be along winter here in Central IL>....

red - I am so excited you are making the stew!  It warms my heart that my late mother's recipe is cooking away in your kitchen - you made my day, and I actually just got a little teary-eyed!  I really hope you like it and can rely on it in the future as an easy go-to recipe for those busy days!  Stay safe and warm today.
