Susan, adding my hugs to everyone else's. I sincerely hope that whichever you choose is kinder to you than the lbrance.

Lacey, I have asked Santa for a new electric pressure cooker with a stainless liner. Can't remember the brand but there is a rather large box under the tree so I'm hoping he came through!

The kids will be here Thursday and Friday, so today is the last trip (hopefully) to the grocery store before Christmas. Ugh. Say a prayer for me . . .

    What's for lunch today Carole?

    Lacey,

My pressure cooker is a Fagor Elite. It came with a steam basket and two different sized pots plus a "bonus" glass lid that fits both pots. I did not choose Teflon, and I use mine stovetop. So sorry that you were too ill to head to see the grands, but, I figure you must be quite sick to stay home. Hope you recover quickly.

They only gave her a couple of days of Tylenol #3, with instructions to come back, or to see her regular doctor, if she "ran out" and was still hurting enough for the codeine. I thought that was a reasonable compromise between over testing and over prescribing. I hate both the lives ruined by the abuses AND that the abuses have made it nearly impossible for those with legitimate needs for powerful pain control.

I have an eight quart stove top pressure cooker. Like many cooking things I have, it's not new. :-) I would go look to see who made it, but Jessie(cat) is snoozing on my lap right now. I think it's Mirro--but it could be Presto. I haven't experimented with it too much and I'm not sure why. I remember my mom using one several times a month. About the only regular use it gets here is when I forget to soak the beans. :-)

Lacey....I think that's good you're waiting until you feel better to see "the grands".

I remember Mr. Chrisapillar! Why should I try to not smile at that? :-)

Chi, that trip sounds amazing! <guy engineer always solving problems alert! :-) > As for the blisters, maybe the ship's sickbay has Moleskin (made by the Dr. Sholls company). It's good stuff and if you haven't used it before, they should be able to show you what to do with it. It's much, much better than a BandAid. Basically you want to surround the blister with Moleskin, but leave the blister exposed (a doughnut /lifesaver shape). For the "on the way to becoming a blister" spots, just cover the whole area with a chunk of Moleskin.

Eric, glad Sharon is on the mend. I hate pain pills. They make me crazy. I have numerous old prescriptions for pain meds that never got filled. I did take one after my lumpectomy just so I could sleep but that was it. It's Aleve for me more often than not.

I have an unknown brand stovetop pressure cooker that I use at least a couple of times a week. Today I'll be using it to make some sweet potatoes for angel biscuits and later for potato leek soup. DH is coming down with a cold so soup is in order.

Lacey, sorry about the grands. Feel better soon!

    Monica, :-)

Ah Mr. Chrisapillar this is the first time I have seen him and he did make me smile. As I have not put up the tree and really can't get motivated to do it I don't know what the oddest ornament would be. I still use a Lucite and glitter and tinsel star that My mother put something back so I could have it at an after-Christmas sale in one of the poshest stores in town when I was about 8. To me it was th e most beautiful thing I had ever seen, but as an adult, I can see what my mom saw.... but she sacrificed so I could have, so it means a lot more to me now. I have a ton of angel ornaments, a ton of cat ornaments and lots of crocheted snowflakes and crocheted candy canes and my great aunts old clip on cardinals with tinsel talles (They must be 60 years old or more).. Afraid of what Esmerelda might to the tree when I am not home, and frankly I am just too depressed to the effort into it. Its the drug, and partially my dad...Was planning on discussing with my PCP on my annual physical in Jan. but they called and told me 1) she had hurt her back and couldn't bend to do physical and 2) the doctors won't be performing physical exams beginning in Jan 2016, only nurse practitioners and PA's... so I see my MO Jan 15 and I will see if he is willing to give me something....if not I guess I can see if I can have a consultation with the doctor.

Susan--I feel for the decisions you must make. Someone told me a long time ago to always make the decision that I believe is right, so that there will be no regrets. Nothing is worse than realizing that you knew what to do and then let yourself be talked out of it and . I am glad you have friends who have been down the road and you can learn of the outcomes of their decisions. Yuu know how special you are to all of us. We know you will decide what is best for you!

Lacey, I am hoping you get to feeling better. I have certainly felt that sick and it is horrible when you feel so bad you cancel things you were looking forward to I am sending you some healing thoughts. If you are into Tea's the Traditional Medicinal brand has some good for what ails you tea that is herbal--I love the Gypsy Cold Care and the Throat Coat ones.

Eric, I hope she gets pain free soon. T3 does not work too well for me. I get horrible nightmares with it. But put it in cough syrup and I am one happy camper....

Never used a pressure cooker. I remember hearing my grandmother and my mom talk about them "blowing up" and as I am not good reading dials, etc. I have never tried it. Am always envious when you all talk about how great they are. In my tiny house I don't know where I would store one.

Nance are you having all this wind today? If I didn't look out the sunshine I could close my eyes and think it was a blizzard howling around my house.

    Carole===WHATS FOR LUNCH>

I cooked a pork sirloin roast that was pre-seasoned with garlic and lemons with some mashed taters, gravy, green beans and cranberry sauce for my Dad and he really has been enjoying the leftovers. Told me he needed more mashed potatoes to finish it off.

He just called with his grocery list, so I must fly to the store. Have to make deviled eggs for the Bowling Alley party tomorrow and the church is sending some caroler's out tonight for my dad.

Wow – this thread tugs my heart strings, makes me laugh, reminds me of the past, convinces me to try new things, makes my mouth water, etc. In other words, it makes my day!!! Thanks to everyone. How can I remember to post all my thoughts?

Susan – I want to fly back there to see your new house. Lacey – I had to laugh that you were looking at cooking equipment while you were aching & feverish. Glad you didn't go to the grands. Nance – funny story (NOT) about the package on the way. Eric – I agree about less pain control and hope Sharon feels better soon. Yup, it's true, I love the 'guy engineer problem solver' alert, but Moleskin is wonderful. ChiSandy – your trip sounds great. Moon – three cheers for the "pillar" and I agree about stuff getting old fast when you're cooking for one. I can't find small enough packages. The strangest thing on my tree is the topper. When I was first married ages ago I found an angel on a cardboard tube exactly like the angel my parents had on their tree from the 40's & all the years I was growing up. It was such a treat to finally be old enough for Dad to hold me up to put that angel in place. I did the same w/my son. Red – my favorite meal, pork roast. Carol - OK, it's time to fess up to what your cooking for you Mother's Sunday meal.

Red, we are having the winds. We've had so much of it and yesterday it was cold! Today is not as bad since its 55 degrees but I'm getting tired of picking up my neighbors trash out of our yard.

I have some of the tea you recommended on hand in case I succumb to DH's affliction. Thanks for the reccomendation.

Ah yes, moleskin, the savior of hikers everywhere! As a young woman I backpacked a lot. Moleskin was always there. Now I only take it to Las Vegas ;-)

I have the tinsel tailed birds too!

I think the supposed huge number of pressure cooker blowups are a case of one event happening and being repeated so often that it seems like it is happening every where all the time. The closest I've seen is my mom's pressure cooker safety pressure relief plug opening. It was a case of everyone thought everyone else was watching the pressure cooker. The loud hiss elicited a "Oh Shoot!" response from the adults, but my small ears were the only thing damaged. .

As Minus has already (sort of) said... this thread (among other things) introduces me to new things to try, and I so appreciate that, too! I had never even heard of moleskin...with that name, I should remember! I will definitely remember it for any future need.

Some of my favorite tree ornaments are the little mice heads that are constructed from dried pods. So cute! I am fond of the nature ornaments and pottery ones that I made. Since I took no charge of tree decorations this year, they are all still resting in boxes in the attic...so no pix available.

Thanks for the feedback on the pressure cookers! I don't think that I ever actually experienced any explosions first hand by my mother's pressure cooker. I think I had "anxiety by proxy" since she most likely put the fear of god in me about what could happen, and watching that little steam thingy jiggling just reinforced that worry.

I'm disappointed to not be feeling much better today...tho the joint and muscle achyness is much reduced....chest congestion, fatigue and no energy. I'm starting to wonder if the risidual loose cough I've had since Oct. (after an upper respiratory infection) was a part of something else latently going on, and the pneumonia vax brought it out full force. Ugh!
I see my new allergy doc again on Tuesday so hopefully she can help me figure this out.

DH is "suffering" from lack of prepared meals so he just went out and got a grocery store cooked chicken. I have no appetite, so whatever he does is fine with me. ;)
Tonight will be more TV series watching...last night we saw the finale of The Knick. Will be interesting to see if it has a third season.
Pizzelle dough languishing in fridge as I languish on the couch.....meyer lemons doing same....

Let's see if this post appears.....

I just finished cleaning the oven. It will, again, hold a 25 pound turkey.. Before cleaning, a small cookie was a tight fit. I guess that means the oven was dirty. :-)

  • Sunday dinner was a banquet prepared by my cousin Iris who lives near my mother. We often invite her to Sunday dinner and she decided to reciprocate. We had roast beef in brown gravy, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, navy beans cooked with ham hock and bacon, tossed green salad, Waldorf salad and rolls. Oh, and bread pudding with caramel sauce for dessert. Everything was delicious but I ate too much and was miserable for an hour or two. Needless to say, no dinner tonight.

Iris is a bc survivor. She had bilateral with tissue expanders and saline implants. Instead of reconstructed nipples she opted for flower tattoos. She is quite a character and an excellent cook. Her mother and her younger sister succumbed to bc. The entire family including the sons tested positive for the cancer gene, apparently passed on by my paternal grandmother who died of ovarian cancer. Iris's daughter had bilateral mx and hysterectomy as preventive measures and her two nieces will do the same in time.

Susan, I'm glad (and sad) that you have friends with experience in making treatment decisions who can advise you.

I feel no need for a pressure cooker but I'm easily influenced by my fellow cooks on this thread. I briefly owned a very nice electric cooker that was given to me by my older brother who is an impulse shopper. I passed it on to another brother. If I were to purchase one, I would choose the kind to use on a cook top. Probably one like Susan's with two pots of different size. The problem (not a problem really) is that I have lots of time to cook.

The same brother gave me a rotisserie cooker that worked great but it required quite a bit of storage space plus was no fun to clean. He also passed on a fancy steamer unit. I re-gifted both of those freebies.

Nance, the surprise pasta maker order was funny!

Red, I'm sure any one of your drs will give you a prescription for a med to help with depression. I recommend a low dose of Effexor generic. That's what I started taking to help with menopause symptoms that were intensified by arimidex. I will warn you that taking this med can turn you into a sloppy housekeeper! You start questioning the wisdom of doing grunt work.

One more major holiday to go and it's clear sailing until next Nov. Yay in advance.

Does anybody here know the difference between lymphedema and inflammation in your breast/trunk? Whateve I have, it is getting worse.

  • minustwo
    minustwo Posts: 13,825

Red: I have truncal lymphadema. I had a trained PT who got it under control and taught me self massage to move the fluid. I wear a compression bra/vest 24/7, and sleeves & gloves for repetitive exercise or flying so it doesn't spread. Yes it can get worse if not treated. There are lots of good BCO threads about LE. And the link below is the one most of these women recommend. Feel free to send me a PM if you have specific questions and I'll try to forward more resources.

Moon since all of my Christmas decorations are in NC, I am trying to put togerther anything that doesn't cost me anymore money, that I will have to pack or store somewhere sooo....stopped into our store (a farm and pet supply store) and our female worker had put up a Charlie brown tree all decorated with pet treats, catnip, pet toys etc. Told my hubby to just throw that thing in his car the day before Christmas and we will use it at home haha so I guess our strangest item this year is pet supplies. I am so lame!

Susan big hugs, so sorry you have to make these decisions at this time of year (or anytime) I hope getting it all settled will bring you peace and a clear head so that you can enjoy the holidays.

Anyone have a good recipe for some cheesy augratin type potatoes? I do a pretty good scalloped, but really craving a cheesy one for Christmas eve to go with the ham.

    susan_02143 Posts: 2,394

This is about my favorite cheesy potato recipe ever! It is simple to make, tastes delicious, and satisfies the craving for cheesy. And, it is fabulous with ham. This year I am actually serving a smoked ham, but am substituting mac and cheese at the request of the "kids." Leftover will get this recipe however. I often divide in half since it makes a huge amount. I admit, I am very careful about laying out the potatoes, but most aren't.

My only notes are, add the herbs and garlic to the cream before warming. Then you can strain as you pour over each layer. It really improves the dish. [Scroll down for the recipe, after ogling the pictures.:]

Looks delish! Thanks for the link Susan, it's very similar to the Julia child recipe that I use. I'm making a chantilly potato dish this year instead though.

Busy day today, starting with dough for sweet potato angel biscuits. DDIL's grandmother used to make them for her so it will be a nice Christmas breakfast surprise. Also making some honey butter that she loves to go with them. Next are some puff pastry squares with stilton and fig preserves for appetizers that will go into the freezer. I also need to french the standing rib roast. Depending on how much hassle it gives me, I may just go ahead and remove then retie the ribs for easier slicing. Lastly, I'll bake some chocolate chip cookies for dh. I only bake cookies once a year so I asked him what kind he wanted. This is what he said. Really?? He doesn't even want nuts in them! I slipped some bittersweet chocolate into the dough that I made yesterday though.

  • The potato recipe looks like a good one. Fairly simple, too.

Good things happening in your kitchen, Nance. You are a pastry chef at heart.

I ventured out on this cloudy, gloomy morning to get my shopping done before the forecast 100 per cent rain begins this afternoon. At a neighborhood supermarket in nearby Covington I happened upon beef bones in the meat dept. There are actual butchers at this store. I bought a couple of packs of the bones to make beef stock after Christmas. There was also a large pkg. of chicken backs for less than $3. I bought those, too.

This afternoon I'm making stuffed peppers with ground pork, ground beef, cooked faro and other ingredients. I should also cook two eggplants that have resided in the refrigerator longer than I intended when I bought them. If they look ok when I slice into them, I'll make eggplant parmesan for the freezer. The bell peppers are freebies from BIL's Christmas veggie box. I may freeze the peppers and have something else for dinner. Maybe beef fajitas with home-made tortillas. I will need to dust off the tortilla press.

Lunch today was some rotisserie chicken from Costco and I made a "risotto" with some leftover rice, throwing in peas. Dinner was even more pathetic... pizza and I made a salad. Mr. 02143 didn't get home from working on the attic insulation at the condo until 6:30. The "kids" get the kitchen starting at 7pm. Mr. 02143 wanted pizza. And so, that is what we had. Last night I had some soup. He had the leftover stir fry. I was just ill.... and fell asleep at 9:15. Woke this morning at 6am, and was ready for a nap by 9:30am. I fear that my body is working hard trying to fight the invader.

Still, I managed to do a bunch of work today. Heat units are all ordered. Permit addition for the new window has been written and I will submit tomorrow. And, I have my follow up appointment with Dr. Christina. Only other thing is figuring out how I feel about two close friends that learned today that I would be taking chemo. Right now, I am disappointed by their response, but I am working on remembering that this is hard for them as well.

Susan - there are so many hard choices. I'm sorry your friend's responses were not optimal. I know most of my friends wouldn't agree with my choices - and it's a time for support and not disappointment or arguing. I hope the appt with Dr. Christina and the subsequent treatment not only helps physically, but gives you some peace of mind. Sounds like a full time job with the new house. Hope you're not still trying to code also. We WILL be here for you and are honored that you are sharing your journey.

Susan, I remember how difficult it was when friends reacted poorly. If I do that, yell at me, please. OK?

I'm going to print out that recipe and your notes and give that a try for Christmas.

Dinner wasn't anything special here either. Sharon is doing Jenny Craig's pre-packaged meals and DD ate the jasmine rice I made the other day....so for me ...2 "nuked" potatoes, a tiny bit of butter and smoked salt, along with some of the chorizo that i had made.

edited to add "I" before remember

    Minus,

In fact, I treasure this group more than ever. I know that you will all be supportive and non-judgmental. You will find a voice that shows me your love and support. You will not be silent when it gets uncomfortable. I know that if I ask, Lacey will meet me for lunch or bring me soup. I know that my kitchen table has all of you around, and yes, I will supply the coffee. Someone else might need to make the scones.

I am still coding. It is how I make a living. When that stops, I will have to apply for SSDI, and I am not quite ready, just yet.

Tomorrow is the big day... and it turns out, I am scared. None of the options are great. I suspect that many of us remember the night before our first chemo infusion. This feels really similar, except I now know what this means. But I am working hard to re-find my chemo-humor. I think that Dana Farber is ripe for my sarcastic and sardonic humor.

Oh Susan, just checking our "table" before nodding off and so sorry to see you in this inevitable pain. I'm hoping/expecting that Dr. C's meeting will be more comforting than scary. She is there to "hold" (and help guide...not in a controlling way) you as you navigate the new scary waters. And you can bet that DF will be ready for your wonderful humor! Maybe give 'em a bit of a heads up ;) then let it flow....this is your journey, and they are there for you...just as we are, here. And once I get this virus under control, and you have a free space, we will meet up for coffee or Turkish lunch. I hope you are sleeping tonight......

I finally called the PCP today and am seeing her tomorrow to see what is still rumbling in my lungs. Also seeing allergist (previously scheduled) later in day, so I hope to get this worked out so I feel comfortable being around folks for holiday dinners w/o infecting anyone!

Made chicken soup with kale and spinach tonight and decided to add black rice as an experiment.....only do that if you like black chicken soup!! It was delicious, but a bit off putting, especially the died pieces of chicken. Reminded me of clumps of poorly died black hair. DH wisely did not complain...first dinner I prepared in a few days. Will use farro in the next batch......
Off to sleep, way too late.
  • I'll let Minus speak for me as well. I'm honored to be at this friendship table.

Lacey, I hope your dr. visits result in your getting better.

We had two of the stuffed peppers for dinner last night. And a very good salad with salad greens, red pear, avocado, blue cheese and walnuts dressed with white balsamic and a dribble of a fruity balsamic that's almost like syrup. The latter was a gift some years ago and has been little used.

The fog is thick outside this morning thanks to the warm temperature but Tues. is gym morning and by golly we'll go.
