Hey girls, I have a question.  I looked through all the available threads and didn't find one but maybe I overlooked something.

What was your experience with Taxol?  Well, mine was the generic, paxlitaxol (however you spell it) and my toenails are black, some of them and now, almost 4 months after last Taxol tx, more toenails are getting black.  I would think the damage from chemo would be ending by now.  My taste buds are fouled up again after all this time too.

The big toenail on my right foot has a drainage coming from under the toenail.  The toenail was black but is now turning a cloudy white, like the big toenail on the other foot (it did the same thing).  The toe or toenail do NOT hurt.  I couldn't begin to wear sandals as bad as these look.

My Onc says he doesn't think I will lose my toenails but I've already lost one and several of the other ones look like they are a toenail on top of a toenail?  What has been your experience and should I be seeing a podiatrist?

Juanita - I did not go through chemo but it sounds like you need to see someone about the toes.  That doesn't sound like it should be happening.  Maybe a referral to a podiatrist is definitely in order.  Perhaps someone else will come along with an answer.  (((HUGS)))

Morning Juanita!  I just googled it!  Seems as though this is a pretty comon side-effect of Taxol.  There are about 5-6 different web-sites that talk about this.  Here is one...

    http://csn.cancer.org/node/212297

Your Oncologist might not be telling you the truth, or maybe he just doesn't know.  Tell HIM that you have researched this, & maybe he could "cut down the dose"... I printed off a LOT of things, when I was having so much trouble with my hearing & Tamoxifen!

Sometimes we have to be our own advocate, cause these Docs just can't keep up with everything.  Best of luck kiddo......xoxoxoxo

Jwatrlily: When I had my chemo (Taxotere) I was provided with neoprene mitts and boots that were straight out of the freezer!!  It was sooooo uncomfortable, but it worked.  Though my nails truend very dark, bluey and gray, I did not lose one!  Keeping the nail areas this cold prevented the drug for reaching that far, penetrating and doing damage.

I do know some gals who lost nails and it was not pretty, nor was it without pain.  Good luck to you.

I also iced my nails during infusion and it has kept my nails fine... Nail damage is a common side effect of Taxol and Taxotere... And from what I understand, if you get the damage it can take months to heal... but should eventually... Go to the taxtotere is a nightmare thread and read about people's nail issues... Taxol and taxotere are cousin drugs, so it should be pertinent.
