Hi all. I'm new to this website, new to cancer, and was attracted by the opportunity to talk to other "older" women. I'm 64, 12 days post-op from double mastectomy & immediate reconstruction/implants. Unfortunately one side has been a problem since the surgery so I'm being readmitted Fri 9/6 for surgery #2. The plastic surgeon will debried tisse that didn't survive on the "bad side" and remove the implant. A tissue expander will go in and after I heal up, hopefully I will be able to grow enough good tissue to allow the implant to be put back in. If not, both implants will be replaced with smaller versions. Doesn't matter what size I am. Don't really care. I'm just glad to be a survivor! My cancer was diagnosed after my routine yearly screening mammorgram. It was in one breast, small, and caught early but an agressive form. This has been a bad year. In January I had a moderate brain stem stroke. In February they found a large aneurysm on the ascending aorta of my heart that needs open heart surgery in about six months unless it gets bigger before that. Then the breast cancer diagnosis... all this year. My treatment decision was easy. I cannot be worried that a lumpectomy won't get it all or that it will show up in the other breast. With my track record this year, anything can happen and percentages mean nothing. Can't take a chance on radiation damaging my already damaged heart even more. Still recovering from the stroke. Can't deal with chemo too right now unless I have no choice. But I did have a choice and I chose double mastectomy. Now I won't have to have radiation or chemo & chance of reoccurrance is very tiny. I am relieved. Hoping to make it to my golden wedding anniversary in 7 years. One crises being handled, two more to go.

Hi Sandra and welcome! Lovely to have you here . Oh my! What a year you have had indeed! Any one of those things would have been bad enough but all together?.......wow!!!!

I sure hope your plastic surgeon can get thing on track again with your implant........it's such a long drawn out process but the good thing is there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Here's hoping all goes to plan for you.

With your determination, it sounds like you won't have any problem getting to your golden wedding anniversary..........lol.......you reminded me that mine is coming up as well in 6 years......that sounds like a good thing for me to aim for. Oh, by the way, I will be 62 in December........I think I'm the baby here but no matter age to me is a state of mind not being........lol.

Come and chat when ever you want and if you have any questions, ask away. This site and these threads are great for gaining knowledge.

Welcome Sandra. You've had quite the year, all right. Best wishes for good results.

You'll both have your goldens. DH and I are working on making it 54 in Dec. Yes, we were both children.

Hi Sandra, and a warm welcome to you!  My word, lady, you've had quite the year with all that's happened.  I do hope the worst is behind you and you'll make nothing but progress in the future.  I think you'll make it just fine to your 50th, too.

I'm not the baby in age at 63 but I seem to be in marriage, as DH and I've been married "only" 33 years.  Marrying him was certainly the best thing I've ever done!

DGD Anna will be 2 weeks old on Monday, and things are going fairly well.  I've gone to their house almost every day since they got home, not a bad trip, only about 25 minutes.  At least that has enabled DD to nap and shower.  Unfortunately, Anna sleeps well during the day and not so well at night.  Today everything went to pot because DGS #1 had a stomach virus and we had DGS#2, 8 months old, all day.  These are DS's sons.  So, now I don't dare go to DD's for fear of exposing her and the baby for at least a few days.  I'm really hoping DH and I don't succumb to this thing, and so far we're fine.

Hope all have a good Friday, and hugs.

Kathy  (And Lisa, those flowers make me happy too!)

Welcome Sandra..I will be 71 in a few weeks..and only 46 years married. Seems like a lifetime!..you have seen the whole range of challenges in such a short time. You are a trooper and will handle the latest as well. High five to you, and hugs...

Kathy I hear a lot how baby sleeps beautifully through the day but refuses to sleep at night. Hopefully her body clock will set to the right time zone soon.

Ooo yuk! I hate stomach virus' . I'm so hoping you don't get it but I'm sure if you were, you will certainly know in about forty eight hours.

My kitchen/dinning room looks like a bomb has hit it! It has taken me three days so far and I'm only now starting to see the floor and bench tops.........lol........I forgot just how n much stuff the old shelving unit held and trying to fit it all into the new cupboard......well, lets just say it didn't so I have had to clean out and reorganise every cupboard in those rooms and throw out a few thing that only The Lord knows why I have kept them because I sure don't! Must have been important at the time but that time has now passed and they have gone into the recycling bin and anything still good has gone to the op shop. I must say, that reorganization sure has made the room seem more airy but now I have to finish painting.......but that can wait till after the wedding! Right now I'm off to the hardware shop to get a shelf to put the sound system on........it's not quite right sitting on the floor........lol.

    Catch you all later!

I'd agree Lisa, it seems to have that odd angle to the sail.........lol. A bit bigger was better, easier to see........it doesn't matter if it seems to take up the page, there are plenty more.

I'm off to take a shower and then toddle (walk) down to the polling booth..........today we elect a new government or Re elect the old.........both candidates are totally not what Australia needs.......sigh. I wish I had a good excuse not to but voting here is mandatory so I'd best go do my political duty.

    Catch you all later.

    Hello all, and welcome Sandra.

We just got back from DD's where we've been since Wed night. It was our New Year (Rosh Hashana) which is a 2-day holiday. We don't travel on holidays or Sabbath so it was 3 days away, and with the terrific grandchildren and DD's phenomenal cooking (she takes after her mother!) it was just wonderful.

A good and sweet year to all.

Hi Leah glad to see you back! Sounds like your New Year celebrations went very well and you got to enjoy your grands and your daughters cooking........lol........food seems even better when prepared by others.........lol. Yes indeed, here hoping that everyone has a much better year.

    Awe Chabba, (((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))).

Well the voting is done and we have a new government.........not sure just what is going to happen now I guess it's a sit back and wait to see what sort of a mess this one puts us in. We were what you call between the devil and the deep blue sea on choice this time round so thank goodness if its really bad we can kick them out in three years when we do it all over again.

Time to get back to my preps.

    Have a good day all!

    Hi everyone, welcome Sandra.

I am pretty young for this thread (60), but keep coming back for the wise counsel and loving encouragement. They didn't even kick me out when I thought I was losing all sense entirely.

Lisa, with the flag flying off the top sail the boat does look a bit tipped over. We had the annual schooner race here this weekend. It is so beautiful to see those majestic ships sailing together. Luckily we had some wind, it takes alot to move some of those old wooden boats.

Wow Mac!!!   what a stunning shot!!!  No matter the size, a ship or boat under sail is just so magestic.......I love seeing them!  Thanks for the pic.

Now as to age, when I started this thread I was all of 59 so if you do your sums, that makes me not quite 62 but I always say age is a state of mind not of being and if your mind tells you you are 40 and your body says you are eighty I think I'll take the mean average and stick with 60.......hahahaha!  Really it doesn't matter what age we are, friendship and support is all that matters.....everyone is welcome.

    Have a great day all!

    Love n hugs.....Chrissy

LOL, Chrissy, I feel 80 most days. But I am shocked when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror because I think of myself younger than that old lady. Oh well, you are right it's a state of mind.

I appreciate all the friendship and support, for sure!!!!

My DD and I are watching the second season of Downton Abbey. She for the 1st time and the 2nd for me. It's still suprising for me because I forget so much. LOL

Nancy and Lisa, love the ship pictures!  In my whole life, I've never been on a ship.  Well, except that little one that goes around Staten Island in NY.

DGS's stomach virus turned out to be strep throat and a penicillin shot worked its wonders.  We went to DD's today and I'll go back tomorrow to spend the day with her.  DGS#2's getting sick now and DIL doesn't feel well either.  We were to keep both their boys Wednesday night while they go to a concert out of town, but that's now pending.  Fine by me if they don't go, since keeping both will be a challenge.

DH and I both love antiques and we just bought a "plantation desk", circa 1820.  DH fell in love with it for itself, but I like it because it has a drop down top which, when closed, hides all his paper clutter!  Or will, once he puts the paper clutter in it.

Hope the week is good for all, and hugs.

Kathy, so glad that DGS tummy bug turned out to be something that an anti biotic can deal with. Having two little ones over night when they are not feeling well sure is a challenge. How is the new babe settling?

Your antique desk sounds lovely! We also love antiques, in fact that is why DH has his shop......to house his collection......a life times worth and he didn't quite know when to stop!........lol.

Well I'm back crocheting again as DD has decided she doesn't like the colour of the hearts I did before so I three days to complete another set........I'd best get to it!

oh no Chrissy, a whole another set of hearts? Can you just dip them in dye? I always look for an easier way. LOL. This is turning into a real labor of love for you! But I know you would have it no other way.

sas, my DS is 28 and at some point some older woman, that he looked up to, told him to wait until he was 25 and then the women his age would wise up and come flocking around him. Well, it has not worked out that way (never mind he is busy with school still) and he thinks he is over the hill. LOL

    Gotta run to PT.

Just when you think you couldn't be shocked by anything anymore... I had my first post-op appointment today with the surgeon who did the double mastectomy. He shared the pathology report. They got all the cancer and I will not need radiation or chemo. Great news. I had the mastectomy on the "good side" just so I would never have to worry. Well guess what? Pathology showed it did have cancer and in fact was a bit more advanced than in the side they knew about. (lobular vs ductal) The mammogram did not pick it up, the magnification mammogram didn't find it, and the MRI didn't see it. If I hadn't decided on the double mastectomy, I would have gone another year, had a routine mammogram on that side and perhaps it would have been too late. Still shocked.
