this is a very sad time for all of us who followed Mary's (MBJ) journey....she posted a lot on the picture forum and included many pictures of her reconstruction. Her husband has a blog that explains what happened in the past few months. Mary was an angel here on earth and is now God's angel. Rest in Peace MBJ

Hillck--------Who passed besides MBJ? You know sometimes they wandered on to other threads. I haven't heard of anyone, but heard about MBJ just towards the last. I didn't want to barge in on TN, I figured they were in enough pain.

Makes me so sad.

Thanks Hillck! My prayers are with Sheila. She has been such an inspiration here, has shared so much of her knowledge, been so willing to dig in to find information to help answer questions. I will be glad to see her back on here when she is up to it.

I have to share a funny story. Last night at choir practice, there were 4 women altos, sitting in the back row. I was sitting on the end, and everything had been going pretty well, but all of a sudden, EVERY SINGLE ALTO was FANNING herself! And at least one or two of the sopranos also was flushed! We looked at each other and burst out laughing - it just struck us as funny that we all had a hot flash at the exact same time! Not sure if it was temperature variation in the environment, something spiritual, or just plain old coincidence! Hot flashes: not just for the breast cancer girls!

Hillock, not sure. We were just getting ready to start one song but I can't remember what we had just finished- I just know we all started fanning at once and burst out laughing. Felt a little sorry for the choir director because we were a bit out of control!

Special K-----you are a wonderful person-------The difference that it made for me at Moffit, was beyond belief. I can't conceive what it would have been like had you not been there. It was as if we were a true blood sisters in minutes. I hope our friendship always keeps up. My home is always open to you. Thank goodness we have the Titusville connection and Tampa. The flowers are by the side of the Infant of Prague. The chocolate as you know is quite gone. It brought many smiles to many faces. Thank you again, you can see the typing this morning is much better.
Moffitt is beyond belief my hospital of choice. Makes my hospitals here look not so good. Bummer. I near fell here at home , so, again being careful. Bending is the worst. Getting pretty good with the feet lifting. LOL.
Bless you, I will never ever forget your kindness. Hope all goes well with the family. L&H&P's sas

Back up the page, Hillck asked if anyone knew anything about the cooling mattress pad. I would like to know, too!
If anyone tries it, please let us know what you think!
It's already getting hot here, and wouldn't ya know I'm starting to have more intense hot, sweaty spells just like I had all last summer and fall. So... bummer... the reprieve WAS seasonal after all. Not permanent. Phooey.
So even though that mattress pad is pricey... if it helps me sleep all summer... I might eat popcorn for supper one night a week to offset the cost!

Hill....I was in walgreens last month and they had them on clearance on an end cap, so I picked one up. First night, it started out so great...nice and cool, although I slept on it. Woke up a few hours later and it was like a heater. Lol. I do what you do now.
I gave up and started effexor about two weeks ago as I just couldnt take it any more. It has made a huge difference. Flashes are not the dripping kind now. Much milder and shorter, and I dont feel like I am either going to have a heart attack or throw up.0 -
Fluffqueen01: My doc put me on Effexor and two other anti-depressents to help with flashes, however, after checking into it and a dexa scan done, it can damage bone density and that's what it was doing !! Dropped those like hot potatoes. Now found if I don't "over-eat" and/or take the multivitamin called "Promfema" I don't have near the awful effects. You can find Profema at the health food stores.

Lulubee and Hillck I just got the 350TC Outlast Mattress pad yesterday. We put it on the bed and I had the first good nights sleep I had in months. (check prices on Amazon saved about $50) Normally I was waking up 3 or 4 times a night, the sheets soaked just nasty lol. Last night I got up once to use the bathroom or I think I would have slept right on through. My wife said that when I got up she checked the sheets and was surprised at how dry they were. The pad does not "cool" it evens according to your body temp to keep it comfortable. Its only been one night but I can't believe how good I feel this morning after a full nights sleep. I'll update after I a few days to see how it averages out.
Update, after having the pad for about a week I can say it does help. Some nights are worse than others but I am much more comfortable than before and sleeping better.

Hi everyone, Doing amazing well, Attitude is in the stratosphere. That damn tumor has brought me down for three years. Never realized how much, no matter what happens not going their again.
Off Aromasin since March 3rd b/c I didn't want to go into sx of brain with the stupid affect of Ai's inducing /promoting infection. It is so nice not having all the s.e.'s. Not going back on until I get my nips done. MY MO would be having a fit if he knew what I was doing. Too bad---it's working.
Having the mildest warm dry flashes. Yeah , they are wonderfully comfortable.
ANYONE flashing---------long time ago I mentioned about using top sheets only versus trying to put a fitted sheet on in the middle of the night. It's so easy to flip one off and flip another one on. I finally, a bit ago, put the linen for each bed right next to it in a cupboard or drawer versus central linen closet. So, easy to grab one if needed. Same with pillowcases.
May God in the Resurrection be with you, passing forward some of my immense peace and contentment --------hope it "catches" you and stays with you forever-------much love all sheila

I don't post much but still read the thread and follow alone. Sheila you sound great! Enjoy it!
I wrote a Hot Flash Haiku as part of a health writers blogging challenge, thought I'd share it:

Hi Shannon--
I've been on tamoxifen for about two years and the hot flashes have only now been more prominent and unfortunately, worse than ever. I have Menopret myself in my box of supplements, but I was wondering if you yourself take this everyday to help with the hot flashes. This stuff is kind of expensive ($22 for 30 tablets). I wonder if there is anything else similar to this but at a much cheaper price...

Sas-schazti,yep I had to stop the Arimidex, afraid to go back to the MO and tell him but I couldnt breath and then my mouth was full of sores. Its better now but still sore. I think the hot flashes from menopause anyway since I went off the bio identical hormone b4 the surgery and can not go back and dont wanna go back due to not enough research. Hot flash not as bad without the arimidex. Still have them tho about 4-6 a day where my skin feels on fire. But I dont sweat like i am in a shower like when I took the Arimidex. I am normal now and got the clinical strength Degree. How are the rest of ya doing? Is there a different pill that wont hurt my mouth? I am looking for one that makes me a little nauseas so I can lose weight, The arimi made me nauseas at first but that went away and then I started gaining weight on it. Gotta be a better way?

Hi all. Maybe someone else has this experience: I have pretty bad hot flashes, probably once an hour, complete with sweating, and lasting for about 5 minutes. But I find that in addition to being susceptible to these hot flashes, I am also cold more often. I go to bed hot, with the fan on, and by morning I am freezing cold, hoping for a hot flash so I can warm up! I find that I pretty much have two temperatures (hot and cold) and am rarely comfortable. Is anyone else also finding themselves colder than usual?
I am on tamoxifen and zoladex (39, premenopausal). Thanks!

Hi Kayb! I am having a hot flash RIGHT NOW!!0
-
Maxine, you are having exactly the same experience I have - completely not able to be comfortable. Fingers always cold, shivering, then when I start to warm up, it seems like my body just kind of overshoots, then my temperature control center must think "oh, the body temp is rising, so I must cool it back down" and the next thing I know I am drenched in sweat, hot for about 5 minutes, then back to cold. *sigh* But today I had fewer than 12, they were less intense, and the sweats were mostly fairly mild. 5 weeks off the tamoxifen, I think I have had about a 50% improvement, which is a little disappointing as I thought I would feel MUCH better by now. I am seeing an integrative nurse practitioner next week and maybe she will have some suggestions.

Mattress pad update:
Kayb, I am very happy I got the pad. I would say it has helped me sleep much better by helping to regulate my body temp. Where as before the pad I was waking up 4 or more times a night covered in sweat, now I wake maybe 2 times, more to get a drink of water or use the bathroom. I have had a few flashes that have been nasty but over all I have to say it has helped greatly, I'm sleeping through most of them. It will start out cool and as the night goes on it does heat up some but that is how its designed. I am happy I got it.

sorry if this has been asked before... has anyne taken their temp when they're having a flash? I do and it's always normal or low, but I can FEEL the heat radiating off my skin. So is internal body temp not affected by hot flashes?
Also, ugh, the past few days I've been having really long ones. They're usually no more than 5 minutes, but now they just seem to go on and on... I'm taking Clonidine and it's cut down the frequency but they're still severe and sweaty. Honestly I can't BELIEVE this misery is a common side effect of menopause. The design of the human female body sucks.

minxie...have your read all the responses on this topic?....if not there's lots of ideas on what triggers the flashes and you might want to try some of them....what helps me is my diet. I am on a "clean" diet and my flashes are still there but tolerable...I pay the price if I eat something unhealthy...it really does help me in more ways than one...I lost the 6lbs I gained after my hyster last summer...wahooo....and I feel better than I have in a long time. I also take Clonidine. I think it helps with not feeling like your heart is gonna jump out of your chest.
fairweather9, I never thought of taking my temp...I just had a mild one and took my temp and it was normal. Have you tried taking your pulse count when you are having a "bad" one. I did one time and mine was up during the flash.
I went though peri-menopause for 2 yrs with on and off periods and hot flashes then after I had my last period almost 6 yrs ago I started having flashes full time. So I have been suffering for 8 yrs!!!....it is about time for them to go away then I am gonna party hardy. LOL I am 58 yrs old. I wonder what the magic age is to stop having them.. OK question....why do some women never experience flashes? are we not made up of the same stuff? I know several ladies that are old and never had one.
