I had an appointment with my oncologist last week and asked her about the hair shedding I've been experiencing. She suggested testing my thyroid and sure enough, it came back showing I had low levels. Now I have to see my primary doctor about whether I need medication or not. Could explain some of the hair thinning and weight gain.

Leslieneva, did your MO think that the thyroid levels tanked due to exemestane or just because?

Interesting. I'll have my thyroid checked...

She didn't think it had anything to do with the aromasin or the chemo. I guess it's very common in women over 50. I found out that three of my female friends take thyroid medication and they didn't have cancer.

I have several pals who take thyroid meds, no cancer, also know my doc always checks my thyroid when she does a full fasting blood work up when I have checkups.  My doc does that every 3 months to check my statin and BP levels & whatever else.  She is good, she found my lyme disease that way years ago

I have to put in a word for exercise. Since I got my new iPhone I've been tracking my walking/running. The conclusion is that, oddly enough, on days when I hit 10 miles (which is a lot for me) of walking/running, the next morning I feel great. My joints are not aching and I am not feeling like I can barely move. I can also sit for awhile and then get up without feeling like the tin man from the Wizard of Oz ("OIL CAN!"). If I don't make 10 miles, it is 50-50 how I'll feel. I just have to keep moving in order to be able to keep moving.

Professor50, I definitely agree with you that I feel better when I keep moving. Walking helps my knees and hips, and yoga helps everything else. But the spring thunderstorms certainly don't help.....I saw an article recently that gives evidence that a drop in barometric pressure can cause increased joint pain.  Who needs  a weatherman?

I complained one day at the gym that my big toe hurt and I knew I had arthritis in my toes, one of the trainers said maybe that means it is going to rain?  we were pals so he was not being sarcastic but, it did rain that afternoon so now he checks me on days he has outdoor plans~~

I would like to know how to get past the severe joint pain enough to walk all of those miles. I am all for pushing through but I am really hurting and no amount of pain meds helps me to move enough to make a difference...sigh. Time to try a different AI because this one is just way too painful. My knees are completely shot and my hips feel like they are on fire. My ankles hurt as do my feet. I need to move but I can't! (sounding like a whiny baby because it really does hurt a whole lot!!!)

Think about giving turmeric, ginger and magnesium a try for the muscle/joint pains. Made all the difference in the world for me and now I go to the gym every day. It's not 100% but definitely took away about 85% of my pain. I am on Tamoxifen so don't know if it will work with the AIs but I think it would be worth a shot.

Thanks lala...will give it a try for sure. Can't hurt...already tried the gin soaked raisins and all it did was make me gag..LOL

Proud, even Percocet did not work for this joint pain for me at least.

Here's what my holistic doc told me to do: start with Gaia brand turmeric which is a good company and take 1 500mg capsule a day, any decent brand of ginger and take 1 500mg capsule a day, SloMag brand of magnesium and take 2 tablets a day. Try this for 3-4 weeks. If no improvement, add a capsule of turmeric and of ginger and 1 tablet of SloMag. I saw results in about a week! The original dose worked for me for over a year. I was basically pain free. Then in Jan I had a total hysterectomy plus ovary removal and 3 months later my pains were coming back, thanks to menopause, pretty much mostly in my hips, legs and feet. So I upped my dose per his instructions and now almost pain free. After watching my success, my brother now uses it for his mild arthritis. If you google arthritis and turmeric, you'll see that docs are now realizing turmeric helps almost as much as prescription meds with arthritis. The only problem I now have is that I now feel so good that I hit the treadmill on almost a daily basis and now have plantar fasciitis in my feet!! Would love to find something to help with that!!

It's mainly my knees that hurt. I've started using tiger balm at night and Bioflex in the morning. They seem to help.

lala, thanks for the info for pain relief, I am stopping at the store after my swim this morning!  for your planter fasciitis , have you tried rolling a tennie ball on the bottom of your foot?  my trainer told me that one and I have tennie balls upstairs and dfownstairs and use it morning, night and whenever I think of it!

clean tennie balls only, not the ones the dog has slobbered on!

I used to have plantar fasciitis many years ago. It was so bad I wanted to crawl on my hands and knees. I had to quit my job. I tried everything. The only thing that finally helped was going to a sports therapist who used electrodes on the soles of my feet hooked up to some kind of electrical current. Not sure what they called it, but it worked!

Wow! Tennis balls huh? I'll try that first before I resort to electro therapy! If I can fix this plantar fasciitis then the only real problem left are these stupid hot flashes. But I'm actually seeing some positive results with my trial on Peridin-C so stay tuned!

I have thigh pain, too. It comes and goes in both legs - just above the knees. Did you ever get it checked out?

ridergirl and bc not to scare you but I have bone Mets that were discovered on my femur two years ago the pain feels like cramps and it comes and goes if you haven't sprained your muscles and if it continues for more than two weeks I would consult my doctor

lala, yeah, I bought a can of tennie balls so I have 3 spaced around my house.  Trainer told me to roll it on my foot several times a day and dang but it worked!  just keep on rolling!  cheap fix and painless!

Thanks, auroaya, I'll get it checked out. I have osteoarthritis in one knee and recently started a statin, so it could that, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

    How are you doing?

Raider and Bc101, I, too, have thigh pain, in the bone itself -- and, like you, mostly when I'm resting, and in both legs. Raider, mine is exactly the same -- an ache that can wake me from a nap or sleep. I had pain in my upper arm bone several months ago and my MO ordered a bone scan, which showed no cancer in any bone. The test was in February, and my femur pain started in April. I will talk to my MO about it again. It was mets that I was worried about in the arm.

Lala, I had plantar fasciitis several years ago, saw a podiatrist, who told me to stop wearing flip flops, gave me a cortisone shot in the foot (ouch!) and sent me to PT. The therapist had me roll my foot on a small bottle of frozen water at the end of each session and told me to do it at home. That felt SO good and really helped. Like a tennis ball but better.

I was in PT for that foot when I found out I had BC. The foot healed. I guess my body decided to fight the Big C and let the foot go!

thanks for asking how I'm doing bc I'm fine everything considered the pain is mostly under control the last PET showed progression which we had assumed from the rising tumor markers which is why my doc switched me to Aromasin Side effects are pretty much the same. Than with Arundel joint pain and hot flashes I take cymbalta and abstention and are under control my next oncologist appointment is in July so n ow we wait to see if aromatic can kick this C to the curb

auroaya - I'm glad you're on Aromasin. I think it's a very powerful drug. And I hope it works for all of us!

Here's to givin' the big C a great big kick in the a**!

I guess I can join this club now. I had to ditch the femara. My joint pain got so bad on it, I literally couldn't get up from the sofa. It seemed to be freezing up every joint in my body. I knew I couldn't live like that, because it was no kind of life at all. My onc wasn't too happy with me. But she wasn't the one hurting, hobbling around and having to be helped out of the car, either. So far, this drug seems to be easier on the joints.. so far .. BUT I have noticed a change in my moods (I never know how I'm going to be from one minute to the next). LOL. Also, I have a hard time thinking of certain words I've always used, etc. In other words, cognitive issues? I plan to stay on it, though, because I have to be on something. Hoping my body will come to a time of adjustment. Right now, I don't think it knows what's going on.

    Hi kittysister!

Aromasin made me moody, too. MO prescribed Celexa (it's an SSRI), and I feel much better.

Hope this med is kinder to your joints!
