Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

I am using the original P90 Circuit for strength training, not the P90X and Insanity series (P90X takes it up another whole level). The P90 uses weights or resistance bands, so I started at 3 lb. and am now up to 8 lbs for 15 reps each of a variety of arm and upper back exercises. I modify the push ups to either just static planks or knee push ups depending on how I feel. Also includes lots of squats and lunge walks which are helpful for the walking. I have done the P90 Cardio as well, but again the original series, not the P90X. I am not the world's fittest person, but am really working towards increasing health. So far, for me, it seems to be working and not aggravating the LE. I do use a LymphaPress daily after I exercise and wear my sleeve all day, except during exercise (I don't have AC, and it is just too warm otherwise). The whole exercise piece is so specific to each person. It seems what works for one person may aggravate another, and vice versa.
Beachbody carries the P90 series, as well as the P90X, Insanity, etc. I have also liked the Project:You series which has 30 minute cardio and 30 min lower body/upper body/ abs routines that have not aggravated my LE. It is certainly a trial and error to find what works. Right after treatment, I used the Lebed video, but then had to move on if I wanted to increase fitness. It is almost 2 years out from my initial surgery. I run a bit anemic due to the myelodysplastic syndrome I have, and I find if I can keep the exercise going, I can tolerate the lower counts better.

I got really sick after another chest surgery and now I haven't worn a bra or sleeve for 3 days and my lymphedema has majorly subsided. Again makes me think the bra is the culprit. My chest is so uneven and misshapen there is no way I can pull off a look without major support.

I just bought cheap bras from Walmart, all stretchie and wish I had them during rads. You might want to check them out, they were called Genie bras. They do not have anything to rub and I think I will wear them around the house and gym maybe

Wow... you gals are leaving me in the dust. Keep it up.
Soooooo I have been a bit of a slacker since pup came 2 months ago. Busy training her and going up and down a flight of steps many times a day has been my exercise but mostly she is tiring me out chasing after her and getting up at night. My walking ground to almost a halt.
Anyhoo...My gang just headed out on a tropical vacation today so I thought this would be a great time to focus on myself and get the lead out. I was all set to exercise my brains out but.............here is the story:
This morn I was thinking about the posts we had a couple months ago on broken toes and I thought, "Wow, I have practically ruined every part on my body but I have NEVER broke a toe" I wasn't sure how I avoided broken toes being clumsy as an ox in a china store. Well guess what? I tried to go over the puppy gate this afternoon and my toe got snagged on the doorjam and I heard a crack. Not sure if my toe is broken but it is definately purple and the pain went all the way up my foot. Hurts to walk on it and now I am so bummed because I was planning on walking each day this week. There is no way I can. I tried gardening and it got worst. Hurts, I am not sure if I can even bend it. Grrrr. opps wrong thread. I guess it is back to deep breathing and lebeds which I have slowed up on also.
On a better note, last week I swam for 4 days for 45 min and strolled around for 2 hours each day at a ski resort but couldn't walk fast because I had pup hanging back. oooh I miss exercise already!

Yikes, Hugz, get that toe looked at! What a disappointment after your resolve to get moving some more. I feel for you!

hugz, oh dear on the toe! I have broken toes so many times....ended up with surgery to fix finally after the foot was full of arthirtis and junk~~.
Suggestion as a pal of mine, broke her toe, but she went to doc, he set the dang toe and it healed much better for her than my system of ignoring the dang thing!
yeap, find a doc, if surgery is needed then do find a orthopedic surgeon who specializes in feet and not a podiatrist...

Laural, great, great image!

Love it!
Headed to Zumba... Got my wild towel and H2O:)))0 -
Love the towel image!
Did arm and shoulder workout, and got one of those Fitbit rascals to really monitor me. I like it already, no cheap plastic rattling around, no resetting.

Nibbana, just don't forget about the itsy bitsy fitbit that doesn't slap you in the face when it's about to be submerged...the other day I took it off for some swimming, but when I got out of the pool, I clipped it to my bathing suit, wanting it to not miss one single step. I was in that suit for an hour or so after swimming. When I eventually went to change clothes, I filled my bathroom sink on autopilot, to rinse the suit before hopping into the shower. Aarrgh, I cried! I realize I just dunked the fitbit along with the suit! Fortunately, I yanked it back instantly and got it into a towel before any water got inside. Or so it seems, 'cuz it continues to work just fine. Lesson learned. I wish I could be sure I'll never do this again but well...not convinced. Life is so full of pitfalls, and I'm so capable of trapping myself in them!

hmmmmm, and I dropped my cell phone last night as I was going to do the recharge, back fell off and was afraid to check to see if it is still working this morning.....it is only about 6 months old!
then again, sort of think good old duck tape may do the job of keeping the front and back as one!

Proudtospin - Hope it still works! One of the major criterion in my decision making for a new phone last year was hardiness. I ended up with a Droid with gorilla glass. Lol. My type of phone!
Duct tape and WD40...fix for most anything.0 -
We live on water. DH has a waterproof phone, good for 30 minutes submerged. We know for a fact that it can go at least an hour...

well it appears to work, just called myself and it rings...sort of think a tad bit of duck tape might not be a bad idea though just in case the back decides to slip off

Off topic, but words of advice - If you drop any electronic like a camera or a cell phone in the water - fish it out as quickly as you can (except if the power cord is still attached and plugged in - you don't want to get shocked.) DON'T PANIC- it may be salvagable. The hardest thing to do is to resist the urge to turn it on immediately to see if it works. But turning it on will cause a short circuit through the water inside the device because water is highly conductive. The device may have been salvagable before, but by turning it on you've fried it. Once you've successfully resisted the urge to turn it on, open it and remove the battery, sim card, memory card, power cable, earphones, and anything else that's customer-removable. Using a soft towel, gently dry it and all components. Let everything sit open on a soft towel for at least 24 hours. Don't use a hair dryer to dry it - the heat can damage components. After at least 24 hours, inspect for signs of moisture - if it's not bone dry, let it sit for another 24 hours. Some people recommended putting some uncooked rice in a baggie and putting the device in there as rice will tend to absorb any moisture. If you do that, still wait the 24 hours.
Once you've waited at least 24 hours and it looks bone dry, carefully re-assemble it and turn it on to see if it works.
I work in IT for our local rec dept and used to manage about 200 cell phones. As you can imagine, Recreation employees were hard on phones - flipping in canoes, jumping in a pool or stream to rescue a kid, dropping them, etc. - so I got good at this. A few years ago at our Pooch Pool Party I had to jump in the pool to save an elderly dog who'd gotten out a little too far. After I'd rescued the dog I realized my little camera was in my pocket. I followed the procedure above and the camera works to this day.
As for a fitbit, isn't that water resistant? I have a Nike Fuelband (my treat to myself for finishing 5 years on Femara on July 1) and it's water resistant. I can't swim in it, but they say you can shower in it. I haven't had the nerve to try that yet, but I do wear it while doing dishes and stuff like that.

hey, thanks for the advise! sounds like the sort of thing that we all end up doing at some point!
so this is the LE+cell phone repair board now!

Mary, you're such an amazing resource! I think fitbits are splash-resistant, but dunking and squishing in a sink attached to a bathing suit...don't think so!
I'll be leaving in a few days to paddle Saturday-to-Saturday on a river. My cell phone won't get a signal for much of the time, but when I do have a signal, I want to be able to check for messages. It will travel with me in a waterproof diver's box. Camera and binoculars are waterproof and have floating leashes attached. I really have to protect myself from myself, 'cause I'm totally capable of dropping any of the above overboard. Oh...sleeve supply will be close at hand, in a diver's bag, so I can change into dry ones as needed. Fitbit stays home (although I wonder what it would capture if I put it on my arm instead of my waist. Hmmm...)

Carol - your trip sounds wonderful! And you sound VERY prepared for all catastrophes!
So a Fitbit goes on your waist, like a pedometer? My Fuelband goes around my wrist like a bracelet.

I have a Garmin GPS watch...I love that I can go out walking and come home, upload to computer and it gives me my lap times, map of where I walked, and average pace for each lap. Also creates a daily calendar of all the exercise I do so I can track it week by week. It is waterproof and can be worn for swimming, although I have not tried it out (no triathalons for this body). With the heat this week, it has to be waterproof as I am sweating up a storm. Interesting to note that my arm with LE sweats much more profusely than the unaffected arm.

With all this great tracking gear available to us, cleeeeeerly there's no reason why we'd ever sit around on the couch!
Mary, fitbit recently released a wristband version. Just now I was madly googling to see if I can get my hands on a waterproof matchbox, which I understand from a friend is the exact size for a regular fitbit. I live an hour from anywhere I'd find that, so looking to see if Amazon Prime can send it to me on Friday. I really am interested to know what kind of mileage I put on my LE arm!

Oh, and speaking of catastrophes, I'm also prepared with what looks like a gallon of sunscreen and a gallon of bug repellant. Plus bug-proof shirts and pants. Plus sunscreen shirt, long-sleeved white, for daytime (cause bugs never seem to be a problem while paddling, it's the sun that will kill me then!). Then there's the netting headcover and jacket. LE most certainly turns you into a paranoid planner.

Yesterday the Fitbit recorded 11,000 steps. Today, 5800 I'm keeping track of it, I'm a little paranoid of it popping out of the silicone case. That would not be good.
Carol, have a great paddle trip. I love rivers. The ocean is here, but I can take it or leave it. Nothing like a good canoe down a river. Have fun!

Nibbana, my fitbit popped out of that case once, and I did not notice it. Fortunately, I happened to see it on the ground at some point and only then realized it was no longer in its case. I'll be amazed if I don't lose it.

Ok - I've been slacking off on exercise and all these posts are encouraging. I have been having lots of foot pain, thought it was meds, now think it may be the need for orthotics. Heading out this evening to get some inserts for my shoes and see if pain resides then I'm getting busy on that treadmill. LE doesn't like the heat but I don't have an excuse for not using the inside resources.
Carol - have a fabulous trip.
I head out to San Fran next week for work - hoping for cool weather. It can even rain - just no heat. No car rental, planning to walk - will try to stay away from taxis

Diane, In addition or in place of orthotics, I would highly recommend going to a good running store and get professionally fit with high quality running shoes. Make sure they measure your arches and the displacement you get when sitting to standing. This made all the difference in the world for me...in my old off the shelf but name brand running shoes, I had significant heel pain and turned ankles. With my new running shoes, I have yet to turn my ankle and the heel pain is almost gone. Just a thought...

Laural - are you running the marathon in San Fran in October? I was there last year on marathon day. I was there for work but was down at the wharf to see some of the runners. The last participant at the back of the line (way back) was a lady barely making time with her walker! It was a very touching scene, I stood there and applauded her.
I was just about six months post treatment and 3 months post (last) mastectomy. Was still pretty emotional and the whole scene touched me to tears.
Kudos to marathon runners. I just want to get around the block!

I agree on getting good shoes to run or even to walk! Few years back my feet were the pits and I crawled into a New Balance store, just about in tears. He measured me and gave me a great pair that I have replaced and stuck with ever since.
best thing I have ever spent money on, I still have foot issues but way better with the good shoes

Diane, I will be doing the Columbus Nationwide Marathon this fall with Team in Training, raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (I had leukemia and now have secondary MDS then had breast cancer in 2011). I am walking the half while my daughter is running the full marathon. We had several Dayton and Cincinnati teammates at last year's Nike and will have another team there this year as well. If I can do this, just about anyone can, although you have to be willing to put in the time for training 6 days a week (4 days walking/running and two days of cross training). We are at 5 mile walks at this point which takes me about 80 minutes to complete. I will be very glad when the humidity and temperature drops down a bit...it has been a bit uncomfortable this week.

Laural, the best of all to you and you are and inspiration to all.
my brother passed last year of Hodgkins so good luck on the research
