Proud, that was so nice that you obliged to try the ladies pastries. They needed someone to test them out and you just happened to be there waiting with baited breath. What an opportunity. had I been there I may have pushed you out of line before you could get to them so I could have gorged.  Ha

Over my chocolate binge for a while. Yes ....chocolate pretzels are a good combo. kills two birds with one stone.

Exercise report.  Gardened for 3 hours today and walked dog for half hour yesterday. Going to wrap now as prevention due to digging and planting 9 happy hostas.

    CAROL et al

Can you tell me if PAL/LIVESTRONG allows modifications ?

As you know, I met with the ladies at the Y last yr. They are aware of certain limits that I have.

I called today and discovered a group was starting, and I said I might like to join ...with modifying. I was told  that my DR would have to sign off that I was healthy enough (implied WITHOUT mods)  I said :"  My DR would sign off no matter what, and I am sure most others would too   <unfortunately> , but I will assess my own risks and would like to  modify as I see fit."

They are not sure they will take me under those conditions.

    What say you ?

    Thanks

    Laurie

I JUST saw the post about the meniscus. I'm so sorry!  It sucks, I know,  but do not give up hope.  Just have that MRI and hope for the best.  We will be thinking of you.

    Please Take Care!

GRRRRR!  ( I know, wrong thread!)

See why I trust so few ppl . when it comes to exerise ?
    Check out this website :

    http://www.strengthandcourage.net/dvd/testimonials.aspx

On the website, The DR who helped develop the PAL program promotes this DVD.  Fine.

I looked at tstimonials for the DVD,and this one really  bothered me :

    “Even though, lumpectomy patients don't
need to worry about their arm, research based evidence tells us, all breast
cancer patients should exercise to decrease the chance of recurrence. I have
not received any negative comments about the DVD. Usually it is very
appreciated. Thank you so much for providing these CDs for my patients.”

I may not be the best to comment on the Livestrong program as I only went once and was very unimpressed...the Y I went to did not know anything about LE.  Nice exercise set up but I went back to my gym and found a trainer who was more knowledgable and only to open to work with me.  He was very helpful, wish I had the money to keep working with him more.

    Thanks, proud.

They did not call me back today. I actually think the gals at my local Y are  *afraid* of me.  Well, afraid of all the info I have. (Thanks to all of you)

I dunno- maybe  I'll skip it.

My exercise in the pool yesterday REALLY hurt my knees a LOT  ( Have patella femoral syndrome) and VOILA...that  mysterious' redness ' in the  V neck area flared just a  bit.  Blotches of red and a tad of swelling.  I have NO doubt it is  post exertional truncal LE flare.  I am anot accustomed to working my upper body/'chest.

This, despite the fact I tried to go very slow and easy and spent 30 mins in the pool rather than the hour.  The instructor said it was fine to modify or skip moves, yet she kept pushing.

ugh.  (This was NOT the Y/ LIVESTRONG  btw ...it was a Rays of Hope BC funded program)

I must be very lucky in my experience with Livestrong at the Y. Our trainer led us all in the LE exercises twice and was very receptive to all the Speak Up literature I gave her. They are very open to everyone listening to their bodies and modifying. This Wednesday we will have Sherry Lebed speaking to us and leading us in exercise/dance for our last meeting. (She has an inoperable tumor in her belly, by the way) I will miss meeting with a group of friends and exercising together although I have made connections with people and we could meet. I feel comfortable at the Y, having gone through the program and feel I have lots of exercise options there. I've never been a "gym" person, more a walker/home gym/gardener-type, so this has expanded my exercise world.

I had not heard that about Sherry- sad.  That's too bad.

    Thank you.

Jeannie you are indeed lucky to have Sherry come to your class.  Everyone and their mother likely has recommended books and literature to Sherry but I'm just about finished with a newly released book (March) called "Radical Remission" by Kelly Turner.  It is an awesome book and she's one of the first to collect research on people who have healed themselves of all kinds of cancers.  Her data is from people she's talked to all over the world.  I've been recommending it to everyone who will listen, lol.  The last guy I recommended it to took it to one of his classes and the entire class went online and ordered themselves a copy!

    Anyway, just a thought.  Sue

I guess Sherry is a friend of our trainer/nurse and belongs to our Y.  She doesn't generally lead classes anymore so this is a gift, indeed.

Jeannie, Sherry Lebed Davis has made some pretty corny videos, and sometimes in this forum we have collectively giggled at them, but really...she's an amazing woman who has created a wonderful approach to LE-friendly exercise that for many of us, works nearly as well as MLD for taming the LE beast.  If you have a chance to exchange a few words, I hope you can pass along how much I appreciate her contributions and that I'm sure I'm not the only one 'out here' who feels that way.

Today I went to the gym after missing a few sessions because of work travel. I'm still doing upper-body only, lifting weights with the trainer, who is taking the time normally allocated to legs, and having me do extra abs work.  Yikes!  But that's a good yikes.  Yesterday I had an MRI of my knee and I'll meet with the orthopedic surgeon next week to find out what's what, and if there's a way to fix whatever is going on in there. Meanwhile, I continue to be frustrated that I'm getting about zero cardio in, and I'm feeling the fat just grab onto to my torso like nails to a magnet.  Ick.

Sue/Milehighgirl, I plan to investigate that book!  My LE comes after prophy mastectomy so I got to skip the cancer part, but one of my closest friends is recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer.  I will be reading the book to see if it makes sense for me to pass it along...the family is in a tumult right now and they're grasping for ways to try to take control of what understandably feels to them quite uncontrollable at the moment. Does the book describe approaches people have taken that complement conventional treatments, or is it more about alternative medicine?

RE:  "Radical Remission" by Kelly Turner.

    Thanks milehigh

I am going to look into this.  I have read the book " Anti Cancer - A new way of Life"  by Dr David Servan- Schreiber"  I always recommend it.  It basically talks about food as medicine and has become my bible.

Unfortunately, the good dr. lost his fight to cancer, but lived longer than expected. I think his book is very worthwhile, and will look into ' yours".

    THX

*update :  Here is an interview from Kelly Turner found on this website I have seen before on the " ALT" threads :

Purple, I turned my diet to substantially veggies and added a whole lot of diversity to my fruits and veggies after reading Servan-Schreiber's book.  He sure makes a compelling argument for a dietary approach that cannot be harmful, without promising a cure, just a way to hedge our bets a bit.

Interestingly, after I read his book I began to wonder if the woman also named Servan-Schreiber with whom I had a memorable lunch many years ago, might have been related.  Turns out it was his mother!  I was a student in France living with a family, and the lady of the house had invited Mme. S-S to lunch to discuss women's issues, because her husband Jean Jacques Servan-Schreiber (David's father)  was a prominent politician.  So it was just the three of us plus two high-school age daughters, and that lunch was fascinating.  Her husband was famous for writing a book called The American Challenge, all about protecting French culture from an invasion of our culture, and she was quite interested in my opinion of that.  Of course, there's no small irony that later in life the family moved to Pittsburgh, where their son David and sibs were educated at Carnegie Mellon!  Anyway, I really value that book and the impact it's made on our fruit and veggie consumption at home.

Hi all, I'm really impressed that you have kept this thread going for so long!  I am currently reading my way thru it to get ideas!

I have truncal LE and some mild upper arm also. I finally found a CLT and after much discussion with insurance company, got my co-pay visit down to $50  (it was originally $350 a visit!!  out of network hospital, etc)  She has helped me with the massage, but I haven't had much advice on exercise. i found some Lebed vids on YouTube and have been doing them.  Do you advise buying the vid for the complete work-out?  I also have a stationary bike which is parked in front of the TV. My stamina is really crappy now, but I'm up to 14 mins at a time!  Big improvement from 5!

I'm also confused on truncal compression.  I went to one fitter and she said I was too small for the Belisse compression bra. The smallest size would not give me enough compression. So she recommended a regular exercise compression bra.  OMG!!  I tried it, I really did, but I have given up on it as it hurts my shoulders with too much pressure and my remaining breast was aching and sore after I wore it.  I'm sure that bra is not meant to be worn 10-12 hours a day! I have a Kimbe swell spot on order and waiting for that to arrive. I tried an Armour all compression shirt but the smallest one is still too big.

i have been to 2 fitters, one here in town and the other is 40 miles away. The one here in town got me my first sleeve but the other fitter said it was too long, that I didn't need a long length, so she ordered me a regular length. She also said I was a 34D whereas the fitter here said I was a 36C.  Confused??  You betcha!!  My rib cage measures 29 in and if you add 5 then i guess I am a 34. But it's just weird that two different fitters come up with different sizes!!

So I'm researching on my own. Any advice would be appreciated!  I see the CLT again on Monday, so if there are questions I should ask her,,, please advise!!  She has shown me how to do the massage on myself,,, and I hope I'm doing it right, cuz it doesn't feel like much,, you know what I mean!!

    Thanks!!

Carol, the book is about people who were sent home to die with no more conventional treatments that would work.  I believe there are a few people who did both but I'm only about 2/3rds of the way through the book.  I was sent home to die 5-years ago and I'm still kicking.  I'm convinced that it was the alternatives that have kept me going so I've read literally hundreds of these types of books.  So far, this is one of the best one's I've come across because she actually researched what people were doing.  Whereas the medical profession isn't interested in alternatives so she set out to give them something to really look at.  Very much worth a read.  Sue

You really do manage to have some adventures, Carol!

It's funny because I was just RE reading that book 2 days ago, and found it odd that the good DR . very beiefly mentioned he felt his father might not be proud of him and suspected that he wanted him to be " more"  (than a a physician!)  He said in the book that he would have liked him to be a politician.

You have pretty much explained why!

In any case, this man survived for 19 yrs  after first DX and he DID have conventional tx, but he surely outlived the  usual diagnosis time frame.

    My diet has changed radically.

Too bad more ppl w/out cancer dont read it .. an ounce of prevention!

    Hi Glennie

I would.  I saw the youtubes which are peiced together.  Admittedly, I am not  a big fan of Lebed, but I see so many ladies here who benefit that I would urge you to buy the video -  I did.   Anything for that price that just MIGHT help your LE  is well worth trying. We are all different.

Truncal LE is tricky and poorly understood.

I strongly suggest you visit the SU SO site for the best  tips.

Go slow on the exercise ...you are doing the right thing there!

    Good luck to you!

Shoot, Sherry Lebed-Davis had to cancel because her boss sent her out of town. She was supposed to come Monday. We had a Feldenkrais movement class instead. I won't be pursuing that. Tomorrow is the last Livestrong class and it's a potluck.

Time to order new sleeves since it's been six months and my current insurance still covers them. I'm lucky I can wear Lymphedivas so I'll be ordering the tattoo-look. If I'm gonna get questions, might as well make it "fun."

Yes, the Diva sleeves  are soooooo cool looking!

RE:  "Feldenkrais movement class instead. "
Tried that app 9 mos ago and paid a lot out of pocket. It was relaxing, but useless. I personally don't recommend it unless someeone has very deep pockets. I was underwhelmed to say the least.

Haha, Purple, yes, I agree. Our instructor had a mean attitude, too. One class member has a broken shoulder/ribs and the leader insisted she lay on the floor on her side. I'm glad she finally spoke up for herself and sat in a chair. Why did she need to put on a purple velvet robe to instruct us? Anyway, not for me. My shoulders hurt the whole time I laid on my sides so that's all I could think about.

Hi, all.  I'm relatively new to the LE threads, but have been on the forums for awhile.  Sigh.  I have been avoiding very well my issues with LE, but can't continue to do so.  My question to you is what kinds of exercise are you doing that you find helpful and which do you find are causing a flare up?  I'm having increased swelling after my yoga and Pilates classes, which I love.  I fear this is not the best exercise for me.  :(  I also do walking/treadmill and elliptical very regularly.  I tried water Zumba, and the use of the arms under water also caused a flare up.  I also sometimes do land Zumba.  Thanks.

Mary -  'exercise' comes in many forms and different to each of us.  I don't go to any 'exercise classes' but get a lot of 'exercise'!    Have horses I ride and care for, ride my bicycle, fish/flyfish, tie flies, build rods, garden, mow my yard with my push mower (also mow other yards to help ones deserving a little help and keep the lot where we work mowed for a very heafty donation by the owner to the BC Navigator at the.Center I went to). That's about all I can think of  I do.  For me, the more I do, the less LE issues I deal with.    We are each so different and have to learn from our body what is best for us individually.

Another difference for ME - is summer (warm/hot weather) is much easier while I can get out and be really active.  Winters are brutal here and limit my outdoor time - have to go to the Base gym but that's nowhere near as much I do on a 'slow' warm day outside.

What 'works' for me, poossibably/proabily, won't "work' for most others or what others do would be 'right' for me.  Our hobbies are ours and not necessarily anyone else's.; Anyone ever tried to train a bunny for Rabbit Agility?  Same thing, basically, as Dog Agility but for rabbits.  I am starting trying with Buggsy who I got last Aug as a baby after my OLD bunny died.  He does decent on leash and is catching on to the weave poles.- have a long way to go though. We are each so unique in so many ways and have to find out what is the 'way to go' for who we are and what our body tells us.

    No "One Size Fits ALL!"

    Hi Mary,

I walk for exercise, keeping a fast pace, but Kicks is so right...do what works for you. Unfortunately that will take some trial and error. I know for me the fall/spring are easier times for walking due to less humidity and lower temperatures outside. I also love swimming laps, but don't always have lots of access to a pool. Gardening in moderation also works for me. I use a LymphPress daily in the mornings, then put on my Solidea sleeve which works best for me to keep swelling manageable. No matter what, I get some swelling by evening in the arm and trunk, but it goes down overnight.  Play around until you find something you enjoy and keep trying new things.

Hi, Mary, I do many things at the Y but I avoid things, too. I was told not to do downward dog, planks or things that would put a lot of body weight on my arms. Spinning (cycling) is a no-no for me, but I hate the bike seats anyway! I try not to get overheated, although I have been after Zumba with no ill effects. I like running in the pool, keeping my arms in the water. I lift light weights, slowly increasing weight. I do the elliptical, treadmill, Tai Chi sometimes. Everyone has their own tolerance. My LE therapist advised me to try things but measure my arms to see what the effect is. If they swell (I have bilateral LE), back off and try something else. Good luck!
