If you are wearing a sleeve, are you all wearing a glove too?
GOLDIE
You are right to want soem hand protection as the compression in the sleeve *can* push fluid downwards, causing it to swell the hand. You might not need a glove , but you certainly need hand protection. You can always check for a sleeve and gauntlet set. ( see lymphedivas.com if you are into style)
I implore you not to wear rings on that hand. It's not just a matter of not be able to remove it at some point. I actually feel like my ring, which slowly and very insidiously became tight as the LE was brewing CAUSED more hand swelling, and my therapist agreed. LE in the hand can be tricky. I can no longer wear my wedding ring. It's better to remove it' before'...just in case.
Good Luck to you.

Sounds great, Carol!
I walked ALL while my knee was broken ( almost 8 yrs ago) and had no issues at all ( until now :>(
Use it or lose it as they say- keep on truckin!0 -
Thanks for the advice, Purple. I will look into hand protection. I wonder if insurance will pay for it if it was not in the prescription written for the sleeve?

You girls are doing so good . Keep it UP!
Carol is really cutting up a rug with all that walking. Her knee must be stabilized or either she just needs to move with pain included.
Carol, Are you able to kayak this year and if so where will you paddle?
30 minute walk and lebed opening.

hugz, the steroid injection made a big difference in the knee pain. It still gets achy and swollen, so I am moderating compared to my usual walking. Kayaking is definitely in the summer plan, next month. We'll do a week of camping out of the kayaks but haven't picked the river yet. Maybe the Pere Marquette here in Michigan. Wanna join us?

I haven't read this thread before, but man, do I need it! I have got to get moving. I feel like a big slug, and the heat and the swelling don't help (and even though I'd really like to blame LE, or something else, I have needed to for a long time!). I've been looking at walking poles online since reading about them here; I can always wrap and walk. I love swimming, but haven't made any progress in getting a mastectomy-friendly suit. I tried my old ones, and they were hilarious. I think basically I can sum things up by saying I need to get off my rump!

I have been taking walks, working out in the YMCA pool and lifting small weights as well as a little gardening. I will miss the pool so much for a few weeks because I get my medical nipple tattoos tomorrow, the end of this fandango, I hope. Of course, LE continues.

Carol. Good to hear the injection tamped it down a bit.
Aunt P. Glad you found us. We all go at our own pace here and basically it is a place to report and keep us stimulated. Now get out and move that BUTT! hee hee. As for the swimsuits, try not to get one that cuts hard under the arm as it may flare your trunk.but still high enough to cover the back of the pit. I like the ones that have a shelf bra but the elastic for the bra doesn't go all the way around, just under the front(bust part). That frees up my trunk. Poles are awesome as an exercise tool.
Jeannie. Congrats to the final step and a big hooooo rah! Your exercise program sounds great. I am a gardener too. I have planted over 50 dahlias this year and am waiting and waiting for them to do their thing. Be careful when gardening especially pruning any type of branches. I do a couple and drop the pruner go do some weeding and come back later. Pruning is very hard on us. Stick arm straight up in air and pump 25 times slowly while gardening. With our arms dangling down gardening we have to drive the fluid back up the arm.Lots of rests to and once I finish gardening I do no work with my arms for the rest of the day.

Just finished my walkiepoos and lebed opening earlier.

This week I will look into walking poles. I gotta get up off my butt and get moving. It's hot, but I need to make exercise more of a priority than I have been doing. *sigh* it's so hard *whine*** eat right, exercise, work, take care of house, **whine***Thanks for listening. Got any cheese to go with my whine? Brie is nice!

Yes, Hugz, this is my second summer gardening with LE so I know the drill. I'm also a master gardener for my community so LE really cramps my style. I wish the breast cancer charities "knew the drill!" I walked the Komen 5K on Sunday and they gave each survivor a rose....with THORNS! I'm going to have to bring that to their attention. I taught my hub how to prune the few roses I kept on order to avoid thorns!
0 -
Jeannie, I laughed out loud at the thorny roses for "survivors." Good ol' Komen for the Cure! Yes, please do let them know how inappropriate that was. Well intentioned, but idiotic!
Exercise-wise, I've upped my indoor jogging and cork-counting in honor of the fact that summer is upon us (110 degrees by the weekend). So I'm not getting out much, but I'm determined to get enough exercise in spite of it. Fans going while I jog--sounds like a wind tunnel in here.
Onward!

This thread is a bit quiet. Hope you guys arent expiring in the heat or something.
Ive been doing quite well incorporating the treadmill as a backup to my "roadtime" and fortunately I havent been spat out again. Will have to look at some advice on the belt thouhg as its quite a mission to keep it centralized.
Hubby was late this a.m (didnt set the alarm) and was raining so....treadmill. BUT I wont use it if he isnt around, so I had to REALLY kick butt. Did my highest speed ever and took the shortest time to do everything.
STATS: 3.4Ks all up....Total time 32.5 mins - 308 CALs Burned - top speed 6.9
Warm up .1K - Warm down .1K @ snail speed 3

musical, that's great!! Today was an all-day travel day for me, so my exercise was walking in and between parking lot, airport, departure gates, etc. I got about 3.5 miles in, so not so bad but not really cardio. Saturday, I was in the gym doing my usual weightlifting, which always makes me feel great afterward. I'll be teaching seminars all day every day this week, so exercise time will be limited. I'll look forward to reading what everyone else is doing, taking that as inspiration to get moving in the evenings. Oh--it's stinkin' hot where I am --95 degrees each day. And what was I thinking? I forgot to pack a swimsuit, and the hotel has a nice pool!! Sigh...

You sure are a goer Carol. How is your knee? UGH your 95 = our 35degr. Too hot, especially if its muggy..

All you gardeners, treaders, walkers, cork tossers weightlifters are just doing a smokin hot job on all these smoking hot days.....You goooooo Girl!
Walked doggy a couple times and lebed opening too.
I know your all going to hate me but I am complaining about my 75 degree sunny weather. I hate my hot black sleeve, glove combo during this season. It don't know how you all do it. I did wet my LE gear and it felt better. I am going to the high hot desert next week and I think I will die like a slug after being baited with salt. We will camp but I will be staying next to the fan I am sure.

Dog walks really slow, so it's not really exercise for me. So I did a walk w/o her today. Only 0.85 miles but it's a start!! and I did the Lebed opener. Bounced on my big exercise ball which is my substitute for a trampoline!0 -
Good work, glennie! I didn't do much today but walk around a classroom all day. Knee is swollen more than usual, so I gave it a rest from any cardio.

hugz, the steroid injection made a big difference in the knee pain.
That's great, Carol!
My knee was 80% better, and I started power walking. Not too smart, but this started back in January, and I really thought it was 'ok'. Anyway, it's bene a step backward. makes me wonder about an injection. As for a bathing suit, I do not have one esp. for a mastectomy, but I do have av ery nice blue and Black one pc. that I bought large so it would not constrict for LE. Dont think I will ever go into a pool again. I wore it for 35 mins.
If anyone wants to PM me about it, they can have it...no charge
LADIES
I'm taking an informal poll if you will.....
Have any of you had any issues at all with your BP? (Mine is too low to begin with) I am wondering if my low BP and now I have cut salt for LE) acting WITH compression and exercise has LOWERED my BP. Sounds odd, but there have bene some internet articles..... I had sleeve, glove, cami compression as well as thigh highs! Pls reply.
ThanksLaurie

I have low BP normally. So far I haven't had any issues with it in particular. Are you having dizzy spells or other symptoms?
0 -
yesterday I walked 0.85 miles again then helped set up the rummage sale that we are having at the end of the month. That's a lot of work. Holy smokes! I did wear my sleeve. There was a lot of squatting and I feel that in my legs today. Not bad but noticeable. I walked 1.29,miles today on a more shady route cuz the humidity is in full force here now!

glennie. Wow you have really stuck to it the last few days. Doesn't matter how far or fast you go, the point is to get out and do something to move the lymph. I can't say that I did anything today as I have been so exhausted due to a shower for relatives. I miss my walks. Did some tai chi breathers.
Purple, you have me stumped. I have only had one BP done last year in the last 10 and my normally low bp was somewhat high. No one knows how do to Leg bp at my doc office. I think I should just buy a system and learn myself. The readings would come out better because I would be relaxed in my own home.
Carol, Maybe try to back off a little. I know you are quite driven to keep in shape and that is a hard request to do.
Speaking of Walking poles. Every day for the last 15 years I have seen a man walking as I am on route to work. His knee has been braced for years. The last two I have seen no knee support but he is using poles. I am thinking the poles are supporting his knees and he doesn't walk humped over anymore either. He has beautiful posture. I put mine in the trunk and will start using them again.I find it takes me quite a while to work up the upper body as it gets tired fast but when I do get my upper body used to it I love those poles.

What kind/brand of poles is everybody using? I've looked at them at the sporting store--broke one just looking at it, so I'm pretty sure they're not all sturdily made (even if they all have impressive price tags). It used to be when we went hiking we'd find likely tree branch bits lying on the ground and use those, discard them when we were done--so you can see I know very little about buying walking poles. All help appreciated!

I walked again today, but that was it. Helped out at the rummage sale for a while. My friends who live around the block are going away for a week, and I've agreed to let the cats out in the mornings. So I'll HAVE to walk over there everyday to let them out,, that will keep me motivated!I want to find out about walking poles too. I'm bending my elbows part of the time and pumping my arms a la race walking! But I'd like to try poles. Is Sports Authority a good place to look for them? Or should I try a "better" sporting goods store? Sturdy would be good!! Oh my gosh, Binney,, that must have be a poorly made pole!

Are you having dizzy spells or other symptoms?
Oh yes, LOTS of symptoms , but also starting to wonder if this ' vascular issue' in my V neck area could be vasodilation and vaso constriction from BP changes with compression. I dunno'. I have a pre existing condition and did read a very interesting article online about exercise and compression.
THX

purple, continued hugs from me as you work on figuring everything out.
I gardened my way to 11,578 steps today, and I did a lot of bending, stretching and digging, so I am counting it as a full body workout!

I have walked every day for a week now. New personal best! My cat sitting goes on until next Sunday, so the plan is to at least walk over there every day to let the kitties out.
I went to Sports Authority today and bought some "cheap" poles. The twisting directions on them are backwards! To open, you have to twist in the opposite direction. I had to ask the sales guy what I was doing wrong and he said, they are backwards! Anyway,, they haven't fallen apart yet, so I'll try them out and see how they do. I feel uncoordinated walking with them, like it is not natural. I know there are some vids on YouTube about using them so I'm going to check them out.
Wow, Carol, that's a lot of steps for gardening!

THX, Carol. I appreciate it.
Phew- hope you have some gorgeous flowers!
I have been doing the Leslie Sansone walks every day, and my knees are not happy, but the 'flushing V 'has not appeared to be any worse for the wear. My sister keeps telling me I am insane to continue to try to exercise, but ... I actually love it ! Sure wish I could do more. Those walking poles sound quite intriguing.

I feel like a weak kitten! I used the poles today and what a workout! I would have never thought it would use my arms SO much that I would feel tired after a block. I feel like I'm in terrible shape. **sigh**
Question: do you think I should wear the sleeve when I walk with the poles? This is FL and it's hot & humid so I'm not inspired to wear it! But if you think it's best, I will. Let me say my LE is mild in upper arm and more of an issue truncal.
I'm so glad you all are here to talk to! Thanks!!

glennie, even though your arm is supported with the pole, it is a real workout (as you learned!). If it were me, I'd wear the sleeve the first few times, and then do some short test-runs without it. I'd want to get used to the exercise for a while before tempting fate without the sleeve. You can try spritzing the sleeve and gauntlet with water, to get some evaporative cooling (which won't work if you're in 90% humidity, unfortunately).
good luck, and have fun!
