Forgot to say I did a water exercise class today. The other ladies are mostly older than me and some are crabby. One lady told me today that I was in her "spot" and that I was too young for the class. No worries, I worked out just fine and she ended up chit chatting with her friends the whole time in another area of the pool! I did tell her I had to stand in the deeper water for medical reasons, but not why-----gotta keep those arms under water, you know.

Yes, I checked out the map,, but nothing is where I live. Or even nearby!  I will check out my Y's website,, and see if they have anything else on there, like the Healthy Living.

Crabby old lady!!  In "her spot"!!  Whatever!  Glad you got your workout done, anyway!!

Maybe they have water exercise class,, that would be good even if they don't have Live Strong.

I am part of a private gym, joined years ago and I pay $35 a month

check out the gyms in your area on prices, my gym has a pool and lots of classes

some barebones gyms (with no pool) are much less but that is in NJ, no idea about your area

glennie, maybe chat with the PT about those resistance band exercises. They work your muscles in ways quite similar to light dumbbells, only you cannot measure the exact amount or resistance, nor can you move up--add more resistance--in small, measured increments. That's why with LE, it's generally better to use dumbbells.  Is your PT also a certified LE therapist?

For those without access to the LiveStrong program at a Y, some Ys put together their own programs, because the LiveStrong one is expensive. Only recently did an area Y start offering LS in my part of Michigan, but several area Ys and some private gyms have long offered classes for cancer survivors.  One area Y revamped their program after the lead trainer/program director attended a workshop for trainers, all about LE and weight lifting. Her eyes were opened wide and as a result, I think their program is more LE-friendly than if they offered LiveStrong (which last I checked, has the trainers watch a short video about LE and the PAL trial).  Like so many things related to LE, finding a good (and affordable!!!!) exercise class means doing lots of homework and requires a certain dose of plain old good luck.

Yesterday, I said goodbye to a houseful of wonderful family--9 grown ups and 7 children were here with us--people were sleeping in every nook and cranny--and I barely sat down for those six days.  Not that I'd call it exercise, although I did duck out twice for a workout at the gym, but I managed to stay moving.  Too bad I managed to eat a lot, too....my daughter and nieces are great cooks, the guys are handy at the grill, and we had lots of family celebration foods.  So now I need to get back to reality and eat better, exercise more!

It was fabulous!  Kids ranging from 2 years to 8 years old, cousins and second cousins who love to be together, and the fun is nonstop.

Carol, sounds like it was big fun!!  You can get back on the program tomorrow.

I actually have two PT"s.  One is LE certified and the other one works on my bad shoulder,,, the non-LE side.  I do a little bit with weights in addition to the bands. Since I now have to have a HX next month, she thought it would be best to just maintain for now,, and get back to advancing after I recuperate from the HX.

I do belong to the cheap gym.  But there is no pool and no exercise classes,, but it's only $10/month.  So I just started going back,, mostly to do cardio,,, recum bike, and elliptical. Trying to get in as best shape as possible before surg.  42 days to go,,,,,  I want to get this over with!!

glennie, good that you have some gym source.  The Live strong program is free for survivors for 12 weeks and at the Y near me, folks would reup at the end to continue!  Then again, I noticed the pool was full of kids and no room for us lap swimmers.

I guess I got lucky with my trainer as he knows what I need, keep on checking around and doing what you are doing.  And remember to communicate with your PT folks as to what you need.

me, my balance is shit but my trainer seems to have figured out what works for me!  He had me doing stuff on one of the big balls....I bought one, only $25 or so and doing his exercises everyday and I am so improved!  Great big yahoo for me!

Our local Senior Center has an indoor walking track and a small exercise room. It's open to all ages and costs only $80 year. I use it mostly in the winter and since it's so cheap I don't feel bad about skipping the summer months. My local Y doesn't offer Livestrong but they plan to combine an expansion with the Senior Center. I'll ask them and who knows....they could decide to put it in the plans.

I want to go to the Senior Center,, they have great classes in the mornings which is perfect for me since I work evenigns. Alas,, I'm not old enough!!  You have to be 60 and I'm 55.

Will explore the exercises more after my hysterctomy,, no point in starting new stuff until after I recover from that.

Proud, yahoo for you is right!  Yes, I could take LiveStrong again starting in two weeks and have another three months free access (the Y is $$$) but I really want to do my own thing now. Right now it's a practical vs. mental decision! I'm surprised your pool didn't have a lane or two reserved for lap swim. Our schedule reserves practically the whole pool for water ex or walk from noon- 1 everyday, as well as other times. Maybe if enough people expressed an interest they would respond. The important thing is to move somehow, somewhere! I was so lucky that my LS trainer was all over the LE, especially after reading the material I gave her. Nobody else wore compression so I wonder how they felt about the emphasis. There were several types of ca represented.

    I, too, remember Linda-n3. Such a sweetheart.

Carol, fun times! You have a lot of stamina!

Glennie19, I hope your sx is uneventful and recovery smooth! It can be so hard to wait!

Thanks, Jeannie,,, I am having a really hard time waiting right now!!  Today I'm having such cramps that I didn't even go walking. Hopefully that will subside. Will do the Lebed opening at least for today.

The gym I belong to actually limits kids to certain times or only with a parent.  Got 5 lanes in the pool, if an aqua class in on then us lap swimmers only have 2 or 3.  So it is all about timing.

The Y pool, when I went for a visit, it was full of kids and more family oriented so that is something to consider.

Sherry Lebed has an exercise program to help with LE.   http://www.gohealthysteps.com/sherry/

A lot of us use it.

The Lebed video is humorous and corny, but it's a great way to get the lymph moving and an excellent warm up or cool down routine before or after more strenuous exercise.  I haven't done it for a while, but this discussion is a good reminder and I'll do it tonight.  I mute the video and watch TV as I follow the routine.

This morning I woke up determined to kick my butt back onto the exercise-and-good-eating wagon! I hopped out of bed and onto the rebounder (mini tramp) for 20 minutes of pretty fast walking/bouncing in place, which got my heart rate up pretty seriously.  Then I had to travel for work today, and the Minneapolis airport is a gift to walkers with adequate connection time, which I had.  I did some nice speedy walking, just fast enough to raise my heart rate without breaking into a sweat. Then on arrival to my destination, I walked somewhat leisurely in a large grocery store in pursuit of fruits, veggies and protein for my dinner and tomorrow's lunch.  After last week's family fiesta of eating, I feel so relieved to be eating well and moving again. Total mileage, according to fitbit: 7.22 miles.  Time to eat some crunchy carrots to celebrate!

    Went to the gym:

    Arc Trainer:  5 mins

    recumbent bike:  5 mins

elliptical:  2 min 30 secs.   that was in the hardest for me,, and the only one that uses the arms too. But I want to go really slowly with building up the time cuz of my arm.  Don't want to set off any swelling!!

That's great, glennie!  A few more minutes each time, and you'll build up before you know it.  Ellipticals really let you know you own thigh muscles, that's for sure!

3.6 mile walk with the pup today. It started out cool but I ended up getting so hot. My head/face sweats like crazy. Off to an anniversary getaway where we signed up to zipline. I've done it twice before but that was pre-bc/LE. I will do my best to not hang from my arms! The harness on the bum carries the weight, really, so hoping it will be okay. I am so compliant, usually. I really need an adventure.

Carol, I bookmarked all of the Lebed openings.  I think there are 10 of them.  I also went to the website to look at ordering the DVD but wasn't sure which one it was.  Could you please post the link to the right one?

I'd like to know how you're all doing these exercises.  I have trouble walking along with breathing issues.  I'm having another surgery next week to hopefully take care of the lung problem so maybe that will help with the exercise.  It's hard to exercise when you can only go two steps without feeling like you're going to pass out.  I do try to force myself to do the walks and such but end up with more swelling.  I do have the bands and use those here and there.  Haven't been able to do the rebounder because of the breathing.  Any ideas of what else I could do?  I'm especially interested in trunk/abdomen exercises.

    Thank you all!  Sue

Sue, gonna give you a slightly off suggestion that my trainer has me doing to help my balance.

Bouncing a large ball!  you can get them at sports stores and mine is 65 size.  It comes with a pump and that is the hardest to do, getting it blown up!  Trainer told me to bounce on hard floor and on carpet.  Belief it or not, I was breathing hard the first time!  The other thing (also to help me on balance) has been stretching and doing "bridges", it is definitely improving my core which also has the side effect of helping me with over active bladder!

Proud, what are bridges? I also was thinking that the bouncing on the ball was helping to move lymphatics, plus its really fun! and desnt hurt bones.

hmm, let me see if I can explain, very common thing....lie on your back with knees bent, push your mid section up as hi as you can go up and down..... I think it is sort of a yoga move? not sure as I just follow orders!

does that make sense?  I thought the guy was nuts when he had me bouncing the ball but then I realized it got my heart rate up!
my trainer shows me tons of stuff but my brain often forgets!

The bridge is a yoga pose.  You can see a picture here on this link. It's not a really hard one as far as yoga poses go.

I also wondered about bouncing on the ball to help move the lymph. My LE therapist says no, but I wonder,,, a lot of people here swear by the rebounder, so I was thinking the ball would help in a similiar fashion.
