management at the gym are well aware of my issues and so far best solution seems to be to swim at a dif branch of the gym which has salt water pool, it is newer
they have told me long range plans are to overhaul the gym but the emphasis is on long range~~

Bummer on that.0 -
so saw my ENT, he gets what I am dealing with and suggests either the salt water pool or less days in the chlorine pool but if I want to put up with it, no harm....
need to think on it!

hmmm, how far away is the salt water pool? Can you alternate locations?0 -
Today: gym time, with 20 minutes of high speed/low resistance recumbent bike, and then an hour of strength training, including ab work, and a great, trainer-assisted stretching session. It's amazing how much added ooomph you get with stretches when someone else is helping.

Excellent, Carol!0 -
Update, lesson learned: Velcro-laden, expensive knee brace = snag minefield for expensive compression sleeve and gauntlet. Sigh.
New oLYMPHics event: Velcro dodging, in the agility or gymnastics categories, depending on how artful the maneuvers are.

glennie, that is my plan! figure the salt water pool is 20 miles down the highway and I could do that maybe once or twice a week? gym company owns about 8 dif locations and I am looking into which have the salt pools and the travel trip
dang but the current gym is 1 mile from my house! so will just reduce the time in the chlorine thing

In my job, dealing with lots of children in standers and braces, velcro is my worst enemy. I have found the Solaris MicroMassage garments to hold up the best to the velcro. Enter me in the Velcro Dodge event

Dang,, PTS,, 20 miles,, but salt water will feel nice!! Hopefully it will make it worth the travel time. Maybe you can lobby them to put salt water in the one near you.0 -
Carol, I will not compete in hiking Olymphics! I'm not sure I even enjoy the hiking, just the destination and feeling of accomplishment. I am meeting up at Mt. Hood, OR with some bco DIEP sisters this weekend. I will be taking walks, not hiking. It's supposed to be in the 80s. It should be a great time---ten of us and most have not met each other in person. We are brave....
I don't know what possessed me, but I ran, etc., fifty laps in the pool today. I am so tired. I kept thinking what a good thing I was doing for my body---lymphie arms, making my legs, abs stronger. I lifted the pool weights and rode a noodle back and forth 4 laps (abs). I have never been athletic! This is the most I have ever done, except for lots of gardening. Did I say I was tired? I was in the pool yesterday, too.

Light the Night Walk last night in Dayton. It was a beautiful evening with over $225,000 raised for blood cancer research. I made it through the 2 mile walk, but the hip was problematic. I have a PET scan upcoming, courtesy of my oncologist who did not like the intensity of pain I have been having. It has kept me out of the walking loop lately altogether

Laural, first -- thank you for bringing this thread back to life. We've all apparently been busy or distracted or injured or...whatever. More important, you must be feeling all kinds of worry, and I hope you'll rely on all of us to hang in there with you. Here's hoping for a diagnosis of arthritis or something annoying-but-nothing-more! And brava for you, completing the 2-mile walk for a great cause, despite your discomfort.
I'll have the first of three synvisc injections to my bum knee on Monday, and I've been purposefully minimizing knee activity, to help the swelling go down and thus make room for the injection. I'm also traveling way too much for work again, so in and out of airports and hotels more than is healthy. So i get a good amount of steps in, just coming and going, but I'm avoiding anything that would cause pounding on the joint, so cardio? Hardly. I am trying my best to get in 2 strength training sessions each week, with some great counseling from the gym's trainer. He knows my issues and has great suggestions for maintaining the strength training routine while still avoiding putting stress on the knee. And he took an LE workshop, so he's full on board with my LE precautions, too.
But all the cardio-avoidance means I'm gaining weight, sigh. Well, in truth it's also because I've fallen back in love with sweet things, after managing for a long time to convince my brain that sugar wasn't one of the essential food groups! Wow, what a power that stuff has to influence our food choices.
Laural...hugs to you! Please keep us posted on what you learn.
Carol

Good to see you back laurel. That night walk sounded devine and for a good cause. Sorry your hip is a problem.
A couple springs ago my hip bothered me so much I could hardly make it up my house stairs although the month before it flared I was doing 16 flights of stairs 3 times a week for about a year. It came on sudden and although I was blaming my sore hip I found out it was my slipped disc l4and l5 low in my back which settled into and presented pain in the hip and sciatic nerve. It has progressed to give me a tail bone grind when I sit for more than a while. If I am diligent in stretching it is most helpful but alas not a solution. Maybe your back is the problem.
For those with back problematic Look up or try you tubing, The Method balls, by Jane Petrone. They really help me relax the back. You just place the 4 inch balls under your butt and rest lying down and breath out making a sissing noise. After a half hour my small of my back can actually touch flat on the floor. Stretches muscles gently. They are great and my phsyio gave me exercises also using them balls. So easy to do.Balls 20 bucks with a book aprox.
Carol, sounds like you have a good plan there. I would have never thought to keep swelling down for room for injections. U so smart! Let us know al about it.
Did walking a couple times this week and lebed opening and of course breathing.

I have been using a Sacro Wedgy (even Amazon sells them now) given to me from my Myofascial Release therapist friend. It works on the same principle as the ball to open up the hips and low back. My friend has been invaluable in keeping me stretched and "released" since my initial surgery. Thanks for the encouragement, Carol and hugz. Looking forward to getting answers in the next month and getting a plan of action that works. I have a wedding to plan for my daughter so lots of exciting times ahead.

I relate to the lower back/hip pain. I injured myself in my 30s and have a bone chip that shows up on scans. Been managing it with lots of stretching, swimming and gentle exercise including yoga stuff.
Started working with a new trainer as my other guy is now got 2 college teaching gigs along with all his other stuff so really not time for the PT stuff. I like the new gal but she had me doing some things to help my balance and dang if the back did not like it! I get sharp zings like someone is poking a knife in my back. Decided to hold off on the PT for now and work on the things they have shown me to do.
Carol, good luck on the shots and sure hope they do the thing for you.

Hello,
I am a regular poster on "middle age to older christian women" thread and saw that ohe of our members has posted here. Our group is very close and Milehighgirl or Sue has been suffering lymphederma for quite some time. We lost contact with her shortly after she returned home from a round in the hospital. We tried calling her and finally got a message that she was in the hospital and that she would text us or message us as soon as she was able. We have been searching hospitals for weeks to no results until Feiday when someone found our Sue. she passed away Sept 23 and there was a memorial service being held i for her tomorrow. All of us will miss her terribly but I thought that some of you would want to know why you have not heard from her lately. She fought a valiant fight and never lost hope that she would beat this. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
Char

I remember her contributions to the threads and will miss her participation. Sad indeed to lose one of our troopers.

Thank you for thinking to let us know, Char. This community--all of BCO--is very real, and immensely valuable to us all. I know that Sue got tremendous support from you and others in the forums. I'm sorry you lost a friend, and my thoughts, too, go to her family.

Hello everyone,,, I'm one week post hysterectomy today! Not quite ready to hit the gym again yet. But I need to get motivated for some walking. So while it is still fairly cool outside (for FL, anyway) I need to step out the door!
Hope everyone is doing well.

Go for it, Glennie! Start off gentle so you don't overdo and find it harder to do next time. Hope it's a beautiful day!
Hugs,

I walked 0.85 miles. It is lovely out today, nice and sunny, but not hot! Then I did the Lebed opening. Went to see my LE therapist for the first time since surgery and she thought I looked great. No post op swelling! Woo-hoo!0 -
Woo-hoo is right! Great update, Glennie. I was working in Florida last week and I cannot say that I enjoyed the evening walking weather. Hot, humid, and nightly thunderstorms. Not at all helpful for LE! I'm glad you have been able to get out and get moving, despite the weather. It does complicate matters, doesn't it?
