Gota walk in yesterday and today. I really enjoyed being in the woods. It's just getting me out the door first and then I am good to go!

Laural and Proud, labrum-tear repair surgery was successful yesterday afternoon, and even after sending me to OT to learn to use crutches, the surgeon canceled the need for them and is allowing me to put body weight on the hip. It's not painful to walk, although I'm in a brace that restricts my gait. I take these as signs that I'll have a speedy recovery and back to real exercise soon. My written instructions say no jogging or running for 6-8 weeks, and no heavy weightlifting for 3 months. So, in the meantime, I guess 'soon' is really not so soon, and all I'll be exercising is my patience!

I won't tell you how a pal who was a personnel trainer messed himself up by rushing the recovery time of a broken leg!

Carol, glad that you are doing so well. Sounds like if you play your cards right you will be running around by end of June and I know you will work hard at the physio program cause.....nothin gonnastop you now!

Thank you, Hugz. I will play my cards right and look forward to the end of June, that's for sure!

I will say that sleeping in a hip brace is 2000% more intrusive than sleeping in a night garment for my LE. Four weeks of this, 24/7 except to bathe, is going to make me go bonkers.

And I'm thinking of Laural, who is soon to have a hip replacement. Now I can imagine that, knowing it's much more extensive than my piddly little repair. Laural, I'm sending you positive vibes and best wishes for minimal pain during and after!

Oh dear, we're not very active in posting here. I hope we're active in other ways! My report: still frustrated by wearing a brace, but feeling great otherwise and yesterday I went to PT for the first time. That went quite well, and I even got about 20 minutes of cardio work in during the session. Meanwhile, when home I'm enjoying an amazing spectacle right outside my door (big, sliding door)--a pileated woodpecker nest! I watched them excavate a hole in our dead tree, and now they're taking turns incubating eggs. At least I think so, because the eggs are not visible, but I cannot think of another reason why the male and female are taking turns inside the tree, at about one-hour intervals. I think this link will let anyone interested see one of the videos I made of a changing of the mom/dad guard: https://www.dropbox.com/l/rtZaCnFMcGEA3bWhHlMAcu

So, I may not be getting much exercise, but I'm exercising my sense of wonder!

Glennie, gardening definitely counts! (Especially in your neck of the woods, where warmth and sunshine make things grow fast, and you have to run to keep up with everything!)

Our water aerobics instructor just came back from re-certification and conference...translated into a more intense work out today and lots of new exercises to find new muscles to torture. I am down to my last 3 classes before surgery, then have to take 3 months off before I can start again with this class. I will miss it, but will have plenty of PT exercises and rehab in the meantime. Instead of a little red wagon, I now have a little red walker, along with blue forearm crutches. If I have to have them, I thought I may as well go for colorful. Great to hear you have some entertainment, Carol, in the form of your woodpeckers. Hopefully it helps the time to go faster to complete recovery for you.

Laural, at some point in your rehab, do you think you'll be able to exercise in a pool? Even if not the tough aerobics class you're taking now, just the thought of floating around makes me relax, and I have to believe it's a good way to nudge joints and muscles into new behavior after hip replacement. And you'll be quite stylin' in your little red walker with blue crutches. You must be looking forward to getting this going and over with. Best wishes and a pat on the back for your great, positive attitude as you wait these last days.

That is SO cool! We have pileated woodpeckers around here, but no nests within sight. How wonderful to be able to watch them like that. :-)

I am working on getting my crankie back in some sort of normal but must say, the pool makes it feel so much better.  I would think after hip surgery it would be a good way to start to walk with no pain or pressure.  Love my pool or the one at the gym~~

Ok, I have been so wishy washy since my ipad types really slow and sometimes eats my words slowly when I delete my typing error in BCO site. BCO is not addressing the issue either and I am not the only one having this problem. (Thank goodness I am on a desktop today.) I am using that as my exercise excuse because when I don't post I get lax. Posting seems to motivate me.

Anyway did a stroll today at work and realized I need to move a lot faster than that.

Carol. What a treat to be able to watch the nesting woodpeckers. lovely video. Thought I was there watching. You could have not picked a better time to be in a brace if there was a better time but oh my goodness the sleep you are having must be murderous. Good thing its not overly hot yet!

Glennie. Gardening counts and poops me out more than a fast walk or hike.

Proudtospin. Yah pools are great but my skin packs it in after 3 swims. I get itchy like crazy from the clorine. My dream is to have a therapy pool in the back yard. Easypools makes a relatively less expensive one and they have a great warranty. One day............ the pool fairy is going to drop one in my back yard. I just know it!!!!

Hugz, I get the issue about skin itchy from chlorine pool. MY PCD said to take a small dose clariten before swimming.  I also smear Eucerin anti itch cream all over.  Seems to work for me at least until my gym decides to upgrade the pool to salt water

proudtospin. Thats a good idea but I can't stand the idea of having to "butter up" for a swim. I just googled EZpools now and the pool I want eventually is about 7000 for a warm water therapy pool that is 60 inchs deep.Very resonable compared to other pools and really durable. Just the right size for one person to do water areobics and plenty deep for LE to cover shoulders. Its my dream pool and I want a wooden deck put on around it. I would give up my dream car for this pool any day. Just got to convince hubby.

Anyway girls, I did shake a leg and did a super brisk walk and it felt good! Sorry for all you gals with bum legs and hips but when you recover I know you are going rip the pavement up with those new legs.

hugz, I'm going to ask my granddaughter to put in a good word for you with the pool fairy. (Her favorite dress-up pretend schtick is to be the tooth fairy, so I figure she's got some sway with the pool fairy.) Really, that would be grand. Wish we could all have one.

hugz, my sister went thru a nasty divorce recently, and she did end up with a wad of cash as the X had made a boat load in construction in Boston area (ever hear of the Big Dig in B town? he had a piece of it as all construction companies did) well after she got her head straight, she got a dog, a new house and a very nice pool!  and lost weight and had breast reduction surgery!

The pool was real good for the weight loss!  it is great size for laps

Yoo, hoo, Laural! I think you had your hip replacement, and I'm thinking of you, and hoping you're hanging in there through the initial pain and courage to push when you need to (like...that first time they made you get up and off the bed!). Any steps you're taking are big in the realm of activity you're doing now. Take care, and I hope you'll report in here, when you are ready.

I actually have surgery tomorrow morning first thing...with all aspirin products out of my system, I have not been a very happy camper this week. Looking forward to less pain and easier movement soon. In the meantime, I will live vicariously through all of the exercise reports here. I should be able to add my own lap or two around the house in a few days. Hope you are continuing to heal as well.

Laural, I recalled it was around now, not dreaming I'd landed on surgery eve. Best wishes; my thoughts will be with you. I'm doing great and starting to return to some halfway-decent exercise. My little hip repair was just a band-aid job compared to what you're up to, so all the patience I did not have to muster...I'm sending your way to help with the longer recovery period!

Hip replacement done on Tuesday, and came home on Wednesday using a walker. Have graduated to forearm crutches now. Pain is slowly getting better each day. My repaired hip is now longer so will have some adjusting to do but each day is better than the one before. Can't wait toget back into the water in a few months

Hooray, Laural! It's behind you! Thanks so much for checking in to give that report. I hope you've got some nice weather and can take some steps outdoors, or at least have a lovely garden view out your window, so you don't feel too cooped up.

I ditched the cane today for walking on level ground. The addition of a shoe lift has helped immensely to balance me out as the new hip is longer than the old. I graduate to outpatient therapy next week and can drive again. Most exciting...the doctor said I can get back in the pool in a week or two once the staple holes heal up. Yeah! On this 90 degree day, that sounds like a good plan. Hope you all are finding ways to get your exercise in in spite of the heat.
