Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

I haven't been keeping up on exercise the last few days either. Went to visit my parents about 3 hours away. My son and family drove down for dinner tonight, so got to see some grand-kids. Enjoyed making dinner with my son and playing with the boys. Then - I tripped on the carpet and broke my toe!@!@!@!@!@! Now I'm going to have to cut back on walking while it heals, hopefully it won't hurt this much for long - do they have an emoticon for eyerolling? Now my parents have to drive me part way home tomorrow to meet up with my DH because no one wants me driving. (eyeroll again).
It is hard sometimes to inform without scaring. Especially when a BC patient tells you something that you want to scream NO about, it helps to take a slow deep breath before responding sometimes, gives me time to find a way to "not" scare them with my response.
I don't know much about the wet cupping, but when I brought it up to my LE T she didn't think it was a good idea, so didn't look any further in to it.

Oh Linda, the emoticon you need is Double eye roll with a phooey sound.DANG! DANG! DANG! It's terrible news for sure. That carpet jumped out at you and got you good. Best you ice it and elevate for a couple days. I guess you will be wearing open toes type shoes once you get moving. DANG! DANG! DANG! They don't even cast a toe so you have to be so careful. Now what kind of an exercise are we going to come up for you?
Carol, good plan on getting exercise in early. I have been waking up earlier just to get my MLD and back stretches in before work. I hate getting up so early but I am happy to get it under my belt.
Guess you can practice diaphragm breathing. If you got the lebed video James my significant other ( my movie star boyfriend) does his lebed opening in a chair. That counts for sure.
I am so sorry Linda.0 -

OK, must we scratch over him again, hugz ? REALLY! I saw no ring on his finger.
Sorry Linda, but yes, hugz is giving you the perfect advice, and I know you will keep up the MLD also.
I have been short circuited by a so called ' cold ' ( no such thing with copd) so my exercise has been poofed for the last few days. Feels like bronchitis ( but isn't ) Cant do too much just yet.Two year olds are such fun, Carol! I have one sleeping in her lil youth bed for the very first time on the other room. ( my grand daughter)
Enjoy the party plans !0 -
Chest and back day was yesterday. Also did yoga for the legs, in my quest to stretch out my quadriceps.

Well, I tried a bit of aerobics today but after 10 mins my lungs said no.
I ended up finding " Breathe and Stretch" by Tonya Nettle on Exercise TV on demand under Pilates. I loved it !
Twenty-five mins of breathing and some really good stretching.. I hope it proves beneficial - time will tell. For the last 2 days my right/'good' arm has been achey which scares the hey out of me. The stretching has made it feel better, at least for now.
We'll see!
Off to do a long sesssion of MLD and then a little TV in bed.G'Nite all!

Hugz - I do have that video, nice to meet your guy!!! That's a really good idea to do it sitting - thanks. Made it home and am sitting here with my foot up, feeling sorry for myself I love your emoticon description - made me laugh.
Purple - thanks!
And I was able to drive myself to meet up with my DH and DD - then rode home with my foot up on the dash - probably not that safe, but.....

As per purple's discussion, it's true James has no ring henceforth he's all of ours tonight. So that means Linda is going to lead the way and I will follow. Come on Linda... I am sticking in my DVD now! Anyone else interested in joining my date? Do I hear any voice out there that has been slacking and needs a pitch fork in their butt! You CAN get off the couch!

You're too funny hugz4u!!! We watched Netflix instead

Linda, A netflex addiction huh? Ohhhhhh...you naughty girl, and here I thought I had you hooked into James. Well It looks like I had him all to myself tonight. We had a lovely time. I even finished off with 45 min of my miracle ball exercises, my pyhsio gave me and I feel pretty good tonight. Yup could take on James again!
Now to do it all over again tomorrow! Yikes my housework is suffering due to exercise program. When I was on the floor exercising I had a gastly peek under my bed. The dust bunnies were waiting there for me. I had to stop looking!0 -
Too funny hugz!
No ill effects from the snow shoveling, but it was only an inch and very light, fluffy stuff. Truthfully, it was more like sweeping it off the driveway and into the grass than shoveling. But later in the afternoon my next door neighbor's driveway had just melted away from the sunshine, so I didn't have to do anything. I am definitely not shoveling when the snow is deeper or heavier, or at most in very small increments. Did the circuit at Planet Fitness yesterday, and they had all brand new machines! Cool! Also walked a mile each way to get my haircut and keep my carbon footprint slightly smaller. Win Win!0 -
Aaaaw, I was punished for teasing you hugz.
After my solo Pilates session I readied myself for bed and stubbed my toe to the point whete I am still not sure I can get a shoe on. But I'lll soon find out- must rush off to work.
Sorry, James. Somehow I just know this was his cosmic way of getting back at me !
Kay
Sounds like you are doing great! So glad there were no ille effects from the shoveling.

Purple, ouch!
Kay, wow!
I took yesterday off from exercise, as it was a full day of family fun that included my granddaughter's birthday party. If washing dishes counts as exercise, though...
Today is a travel day, so I will get miles in, walking for an hour at my connecting airport. Plus hoping to get outdoors later at my sunny, warm destination!0 -
Purple and the rest of you. You are all such a cheeky bunch. Got to go do my walk in the rain now. Did mld and stretches already. Am on track!
0 -
Ok.... donned the rubber pants and out I went. This was really hard to do but now it is behind me. It helped to know that Carol was going to put in some big miles too.
Out with your snout girls!

Did 3.5 miles on the elyptical tonight.
The cold spell is breaking here. It's about 37 right now, going up to 50 tomorrow and 60 on Wednesday. Can't wait! I won't even complain about the rain.0 -
Hugz, I got 5.9 miles in today, much of it outside in some gorgeous weather. 78 degrees, low humidity, and a partially cloudy sky, i.e. perfect walking weather. But my walking was not terribly speedy, as I try not to overdo arm pumping on flight days. I'll bet Kay broke a much bigger sweat on the elliptical, which really works your legs!
0 -
Still resting that dang toe, and feeling sorry for myself as I watched the rain!!! Tomorrow will be better!
0 -
Yeah to Kay and Carol, Congratulations to the elliptical and outdoor walker.
Linda, I will give you one of my sloppy kisses on your big toe just like mom would in order to have you feel better. Here goes!

Linda, how frustrating! I hope it heals fast!

Thanks! You guys are the best!

Ok, I really hate to ask this ( becuz I may not want the answer) but I have a BC/LE sister here who is concerned that I dont wrap or wear nite garments. ( wearing sleeve and glove all day of course )
Isnt my hand swelling ' permanent' even if I wear a nite garment ( or not ) ? My LEist has not said I need anything at night and the LE is mild. How many of you never wear nite garments or ...pls give your suggestions.
THX

I really should let the experts weigh in. I do wear a night garment, but I think my LE is not the earliest or most managable compared to others. I do think it depends on the stage. I will say though that wearing it at night, I wake up a little less swollen than if I don't. I admit I am not compliant every night. Maybe you should try it and see if it helps. I don't believe swelling is necessarily permanent, although the longer it stays there without going away, the higher the chance of it becoming permanent.

I wear my night garments when my LE isn't stable, when I've done too much and have more swelling. I probably should where at least the Jovi sleeve most nights, but I don't. It does make a difference when I'm going through a problematic time. Purple, what has your LE classified you as - I started out as Stage 0, but have slowly worked my way up to Stage 2 (in my arm), my truncal has actually gotten better. Each episode I have seems to leave me a little more swollen. I'm probably not as compliant as I should be either - it takes so much time, and sometimes I like to pretend everything is the same as before.
I guess bottom line - I'd ask your LE-T about it. Mine would like me to wear day and night garments all the time, and if I had, I might have better control over the swelling now.
And - each time I've had swelling flare -I can tie it back to a specific incident, of course each time it's something different.

OK. Thanks Linda and Kay.
I will ask my LEist when I see her and now an update on LIVESTRONG at my local Y:
The meeting went very well. I was happy to see the head trainer DID have some knowledge of LE and said that all of the LIVESTRONG trainers must go thru a webinar ( It is what it is ) about LE. It was a very positive experience.I gave them the LE doc I created regarding exercise and LE risks etc ... it was very helpful to them.
I asked what she might have started me at when I called and looked into LIVESTRONG many mos ago ( BEFORE my LE dx) She said treadmill ( ok) and bike ( ok) then, after many weeks, perhaps elliptical (UGH) So, if my arms were not building gradually, one day I could just jump on the elliptical ? I told her that might prove risky. I explained why. She listened intently and took notes. She was very graetful and seriously concerned about everything I had to say.
OK, I know some of my posts come across as negative, but I tell it like it is and I have to say STRICTLY from the PAL ppl I spoke with (only) - Shame on them for giving up on the YMCA! There was knowledge they could have shared that would help our BC sisters who do not have LE. The YMCA was very open to me/ to add'l info.
They even asked if I would come and speak ( we'll see )
They took my document for their personal use and I encouraged to check it all to be factual as it had no bibliography.
She explained to me that most of their pts are BC pts and need a DRS note. I explained to her that most DRS would readily give a note w/out mention of LE risk . Mine would have .I explained the possibility of risk with resistance bands. She wrote it down. She was happy to see where I had written that swimming or water play might be helpful and I pointed out that LAP swimming might be risky . She took note. We talked for a long time.
I made it clear that my main purpose was to advocate and just hope that perhaps just one person might become more aware of their LE risk and not get it. She promised we would be keeping in touch and working together to be sure their program was as "safe and effective as possible. I gave her lots of leads to check online and she wrote them all down.
When our meeting was done, she said :
"You came here for something. What was it ? Did we meet your expectations? Have we done what you needed us to do ?"
I heard someone say , " Yes, you listened ."
It was me.
*A special thanks to Carol for her editing.0 -
Purple, I think you have contributed a wealth of info to the local Y!
wonderful! My experience with the Livestrong/Y program was that the instructor knew nothing about LE. Seems like your started as the same! You have shamed me! Well maybe I should go back and help the local Y become better informed.
So yeah for you and congrats

Purple, nice work! My understanding of the LiveStrong program is that the trainers are asked to watch a 90 minute video about LE and PAL, but it's not clear that they actually all watch it, or that it's detailed enough to do the job we need it to. I'd be curious to know if the trainers at your Y used any such video. In any case, your document --thanks for showing it to me--did a great job of explaining our issues!
My report today: 4.4 miles, not very exciting walking, but it did the daily job of keeping me moving. Now I intend to do Lebed after a few minutes of checking our various threads here, then to sleep!

Thanks, Carol!
The trainer told me that she is going to look into exactly who puts their training materials out. She said she will definitely be back in touch with me. She wanted to use my document, and although I approved it, I told her that she should take the responsibility to make sure that it is indeed all factual ( even though we know it is ) . Each individual needs to take their own responsibility in this.I will let you know the follow up. She was not sure where they got their training materials from. She called it a webinar and said after that, they are all certfied in LE training. Thx again!
Proud
You go for it ! I am betting they will be grateful. I believe you said they wanted you as a speaker (?) Why not ?!
Pls let us know if you contact them. I will be interested in seeing if many Y's are that open. LOTS of BC pts are going for their FREE 12 week workouts. I sincerely believe LIVESTRONG's goal is nothing but pure ( hey, maybe they think they will also end up with some memberships, but that's business ) If I am right, they will be very happy for your help.

Purple, I am very appreciative of the PAL program and what they did for me, but everyone is entitled to make their own judgments. I do think there may be a profit motive influencing them, but am not really sure. I have two Y's about 5 miles from me, but neither do anything with the live strong program, so maybe this area and the Y's around here aren't as good or open as the one you are dealing with. I think what you're doing is wonderful!
No exercise to report yesterday, but I did wear my sleeve and glove and got measured for a new one. Will be getting the jovipak with the hand and fingers in it that LindaK recommended.0 -
Purple, I have not gone back to the Y and their program as my gym which now has a trainer who is working on his PHD in athletic training and his thesis is about working with cancer patients. He has developed a program that he is now working with Cancer Institute or NJ so that the oncos there will include the training/therapy as part of the full treatment.
He gets an ear full from me regarding LE on a regular basis and has gotten my arm in much better shape. So I like hanging at my old gym as among other things, it has a better pool and no little folks running around~~

Purple - good for you! Love seeing feisty swell sisters shaking things up a bit.
As for wearing garments day or night, I wear my compression sleeve/gauntlet during the day only when doing weight-bearing exercise or yoga or otherwise stressing the arm. I find I don't have to wear it during aerobic exercise because my arms or hands don't swell.
I wear my Tribute nightsleeve at night when I've overdone it or am otherwise worried about the arm, and I'll also wear it for a night if I haven't worn it in a week or so, just to wear it. I started out with Stage I arm LE, but now :::knocking on wood::: it's pretty well controlled with no swelling - as if I've managed to push it back to Stage 0.
When I run my Flexitouch (a couple of times a month) per my LET I just run the 30 minute upper body truncal cycle and don't do the entire 60 minute upper body/arm cycle unless I'm really worried about the arm or hand from overdoing it, a bug bite, a cooking burn, etc.
I wear my Tribute vest more (without the sleeve attached) - at least 2-3 times a week, and more if I'm having truncal issues.
Damn, I have a whole wardrobe of this stuff!!!
