Breast Cancer Surgery Delays Don't Affect Survival in DCIS, Early-Stage Estrogen-Receptor-Positive Disease

Beyond the headline, it is important to note that “Increased time to operation was associated with increased odds of pathologic upstaging in DCIS patients...but not in patients with invasive cancer, irrespective of initial treatment strategy. No difference in OS was seen by time to operation in DCIS or NET patients.“ NET patients means the people with early stage invasive breast cancer were given neoadjuvant endocrine therapy. In other words, they took anti-estrogen therapy while waiting. That seems a very important point for anyone facing a delay. It seems to me that if you are facing a delay you should ask about starting hormonal therapy while waiting, based on this study.
