Has anyone on here used the penguin cold caps? I used them during my AC chemo but was wondering if they were necessary during Taxol. I've read hair loss is a side effect w/ Taxol but then they say your hair starts to grow during Taxol, so I'm not really sure what to think. The caps & ice are really expensive and exhausting. So if I didn't have to worry about hair loss during Taxol, that'd be great.

Deena, I think any chemo has the potential of hair loss. I never lost all mine completely and the fuzz I do have is slowly growing, I think. But after I switched from Epirubicin and Cytoxan to Taxol, I continued to lose my eyebrows and eye lashes. I still have enough brows that I don't need a pencil but I have almost zero bottom lashes and some still hanging in there at the top. I have my 12th and hopefully final chemo next Monday, the 14th.

I'm 4 weeks out from my last Taxol and my last eyebrow hairs just fell out yesterday. I've been really sore for the past 3 weeks - mostly in my hips and back and shoulders. Anyone else deal with delayed aches and pains after finishing Taxol?? When I first get up from sitting it takes me a good 10 steps to straighten up and walk properly because I'm so stiff and sore!

Yippee! Steroid insomnia! La la la la! Ugh!!

Sorry Belleb about the SE's and pain! That sounds terrible! I hope they start alleviating soon! Have you told your MO about it?

Sinsin - I was up at 4am eastern - - catching up on posts. I have a bit of anxiety going into treatment #10 for some reason. I enjoyed my break and am trying to get into warrior mode instead of debating quitting it altogether.

I also have aches and pains recently - never attributed to the Taxol, but could be. It takes me a bit to straighten up after sitting or lying down for a while. Hmmmm. I'll be interested to hear what other say about that one.

I'm in the chair now. Hoping to skate through these final 3 treatments with minimal effects and that my neuropathy acupuncture and massage will help my cause. :)

    Take care, all!!

Jhondro, I am a high anxiety mess today as I head in this afternoon for #2.  It's not like I don't know what to expect in the chair.  Wishing you a non-eventful sitting.

Thanks mmtagirl!! I am about 20 minutes from being done today. Good luck to you and hugs. I've had pretty lousy sleep most nights before chemo. I guess it is a combination of everything. Hope your SEs are minimal!!

Sinsin, I had the blisters you are talking about.  I have a rash on the backs of both of my hands, but the sides (below my pinkie fingers) almost looked like a burn with the blisters and now that is all peeling away.  Most of my nails have turned brown and some that are a lighter color are starting to ooze.  I am going to talk to the doctor about that on Thursday.

Right now I am supposed to get Taxol #11 on Thursday.  It is funny how everybody is so different on this stuff.  A/C was a breeze for me.  I had no problems and didn't even feel like I was taking chemo.  Then Taxol comes along and wow, it has been and experience.  As the week go on I am more and more tired.  Really looking forward to not being so tired and ready to get my taste buds back.

Hugs to all on this board.  Every day we are all one step closer!!!

Jhodro, sorry you were up so early. Hope #10 goes smoothly for you! It's understandable to have some anxiety. I've been struggling lately with trying to be in warrior mode too. Scared as I am having other symptoms that scare me. Going to try and hit the urgent care tomorrow and see if I can get them to order an ultrasound. In the meantime, I'm popping anxiety meds.

    Mmtagirl, good luck on #2!

Doughboy, sorry you're having such a rough time with Taxol but you're almost at that finish line! Hang in there!! Maybe your onc can lower your dose and see if that helps with the nails. Do you ice? I ice mine during infusions and I think it helps. I have the white lines in my nails and some have a bit of yellowing at the tips with lifting but they don't look too bad. Grateful for that.

Thanks Sinsin! I have tried to do the 'mind over matter' thing today. We'll see how long it lasts. I didn't feel as tired as I did last time during and right after the infusion, so since I've been up since 4, I am thinking I might actually sleep tonight. Good luck with Urgent Care. Hope you find some relief.

Doughboy: you are so right about one step closer. I'm really trying to remember that and just stay out of the dark place that so many people refer to on these boards. Hang in there!!

    10 down 2 to go. [Then rads…maybe I shouldn't be looking at that board…]

no 40 for me yesterday. My hair which has slowly grown over the last 9 months on taxol is falling out again much to my horror,  however I was reminded how easy we really have it on taxol chatting to the people in the chairs next to me. Most were there for the whole day and then return for half days for the rest of the week. I'll take a couple of hours once a week then off to work any day

feeling better now that #2 is done. Fell asleep in the chair with my fingers in an ice bowl and my feet covered in pea bags even with a steroid IV.  Guess that Benadryl worked!

My toes are feeling tingly tonight.  I hope I am just paranoid and it isn't the start of neuropathy.  Neupogen hip ache starting.

Shazza, you are so right and thanks for the reminder that all things considered there is always a silver lining.

Wishing all of you an easy next few days.

Well this is my first post here. I still have one more of the dreaded A/C on Friday and then I start Taxol. What is interesting is that I will go every other week for 8 treatments and sit in the chair for 2.5 hours. Has anyone had this in stead of every week?? I'm not sure if this is better or not! My MO told me to get glutamane powder and mix it with juice or water and drink it three times a day. I think for just the first 3-5 days, I'm not sure.  I have a prescription for meds to take the night before and the morning of treatment. I just want to get past this last A/C!!

I already have a little bit of darkness at the bottom of my nails and I was told to take the nail polish off my toe nails. She said it creates darkness for fungus to grow.

Hi Homemom,  I've been drinking glutamine powder.  I've had eight taxols and I have no neuropathy.  I put two teaspoons in a glass of OJ twice a day.  I had been doing three times, but dropped to two.   I found pricing of the powder to be all over the place...the cheapest I finally found was NOW brand, and I get it on Amazon.

I haven't heard of bi-weekly, taxol for 8 - - sounds like it's a compromise between dose dense and weekly...  I skipped a treatment - pushed it out four days - didn't really skip it - but that little break felt very good - maybe that's what your schedule will provide for you.

    Good luck!!

    Jen

Jen, do you drink it every day or just the first few days after treatment? On another note, I was born in NJ and lived on the shore in a small town called Keansburg. Where are you? I now live in Orlando Fl.

I just had #10 of taxol yesterday. I am taking vitamin b complex and doing massage and acupuncture for the neurpathy in my feet. It showed up after treatment #8. It was much worse after #9, but then I started alternative treatments and it's bearable. I also had a week off for vacation, so I think that has helped significantly. Last night was the first post-treatment night that I was able to sleep with 2mg of ativan. I was up since 4 that morning and fought to stay awake after the infusion so that I could hopefully sleep at night. It worked, and I hope I can get sleep the rest of the week. Today I'm feeling good on my steroid high and I'm hoping for no SE's the rest of the week. Crossing my fingers and toes. (metaphorically). :)

    Take care all!!!

home mom, I drink it every day, but I'm most diligent the day before and a few days after....other days it's okay if I slack.  I am also taking 200 mg of b6.

I am about 40 miles north of Keansburg.

I bought 100mg of B6 - I guess I should take two then. Thanks for the response Jen. I haven't lived in Keansburg since I was 11 years old, but it was my childhood home :)

It's going to be a loooong weekend with my last A/C, but it's really just two days of being uncomfortable and then each day it gets a little better. UGH, can I just bypass this one?? My taste buds are just getting back to normal LOL

I have a strange question.  Every time I see my oncology he always presses on my stomach and asks if I have any pain.  Well, I didn't until yesterday and it is in mt lower right side.  I am getting paranoid that it is my appendix.  I am sure I am playing mind games with myself.  Has anybody else had pains with taxol?

doughboy when your Onc feels your stomach he is checking your liver.  The upper right abdomen is usually where you feel pain if there are problems there. I haven't heard of taxol causing problems with the appendix but it does do a number on our guts with the whole chemo constipation, diarrhoea thing. But if it's concerning you check with your Onc or MD.

Hats off to all you amazing ladies that are doing weekly taxol for more than 12 rounds. I go for #11/12 this Friday and I'm dreading it. My SE lately are very similar to the AC side effects and I'm not sure how I'm going to make it. I'm also supposed to start working nights and taking on a full schedule again 10 days after my last chemo and I'm not sure that's such a great idea now.

The more people tell me that I should be happy that it's almost over the more I get annoyed. Like I'm goin to feel miraculously better the next day. Not to mention that I still have to get body parts cut off, have my body irradiated for 2 months, get an IV infusion every 3 weeks for 9 more months and squeeze in reconstructive surgery somewhere. How on earth is that almost done. Bleh sorry ladies that rant just burst it's way through!! I'm good now.....kind of.

    Jules,

It's done one day at a time. Just as you've been doing it.  Can you unburden yourself from the nights and full schedule you have planned for the month between taxol and surgery? That's a month to recover and regain your strength, not to wear yourself down trying to pretend all is well.  Try to focus on and remind yourself of what you've already accomplished when you find yourself going to that place of how will I do it.  You will do it.  Other people have no idea what to say to you and try their best to relate....but they can't.  Chemo sucks. You've done 14 out of 16 total treatments. That's amazing! You are so close to closing this chapter and moving on to phase 2!!

HomeMom, I moved from Orlando to Seattle. LOL I have lived all over Orlando. ;)

Johodro, my OB ended up ordering the ultrasound for me so I didn't need to go to urgent care. And . . . results were good. I am SO relieved! I've never been so happy to find out I'm getting fat in my stomach in my entire life, but I'll take it. LOL Damn menopause. Haha!

Omg Jules, now I feel bad for complaining. Last night I just told myself to get over it already. Be proactive again like I was in the beginning and get through this. Time flies right?!
