CJRT, I have hardware placed middle of August and therafter had to have dental work done (wisdom and molar pulled out ) just 2 weeks ago. This is in preparation for bisphosphonates treatment coming up for me. My oral surgeon gave me 4 tabs of Amoxicillin prior to surgery (500 mg each) and penicillin 4 times a day for 5 days therafter. On the 3rd day, I felt nauseated and then called oral surgeon who then told me to reduce it to just 2x a day until script was consumed. This helped rid of the nausea. Tomorrow, I will have a "filling" fone and again was given 4 tabs of Amoxicillin to take - 2 hrs prior. Unlike the surgery/extraction...there will be no follow-up pills this time. Perhaps you can ask for Amoxicillin instead of Keflex? Amoxicillin is much gentler I was told....

Latte, I don't think anti biotics are given for a general clean but I do know that it is recommended that we keep our teeth and gums in as good a condition as possible. A good conversation with your dentist will tell you what his/her standard of care is for those with stage IV.

Chrissy you are absolutely correct....my dentist did not require for me to take antibiotics for general cleaning, but he did for fillings

Today has been a good day. I will start chemo on Monday. Taxol weekly, Herceptin every three weeks, and Zometa monthly. They will reevaluate in three months.
Cynthia, I am from Arkansas also. I worked in Little Rock at the Main Health Department. I am now a missionary in Costa Rica. Have a ball at the walk and with your make over.

Teen22- Thank you for sharing your experience with dental work and antibiotics. Amox. has made me vomit in the past, so they recommended Keflex instead. My doctor typically does prescribe Amox. instead. Good luck to you as you get past this annoying dental hurdle to get to your next treatment. Thank you again!

I finished radiation Monday, and this week has been the worst as far as side effects. I forgot that the week after your done sucks the most. I can't wait for my guts to stop boiling and to get some energy back.

checking in....had 920cc's taken out of my lung last week not sure if I told you, chemo on again.....willl it or does it ever stop, nope don't think so....how is everybody?

NO PET for me. Insurance turned it down so I have bone and ct scans scheduled for next week. I was so bummed as I've had this ongoing pain in my thigh since June, like a deep bruise and I don't think a pelvic CT scan will go down that far...

So sorry for you all. Wish I could come up with something to cheer you up. Cancer is BITCH!!, But I am thankful that we have chemo and other meds to help us. Years ago when my Mom and Dad had cancer all they had was surgery, and then the Dr coming out and telling you how long they have to live. And to just take them home to die, Was not cool at all.

Hi all. Well I've been in the hospital for the last 7 days. I had been having very bad back pain for the last month and I had a ct which showed a compression fracture at T12 and a new lesion at L5. The pain got so bad I couldn't get out of bed or walk so my husband brought me in to the er. I had kyphoplasty done this past Wednesday where they filled my compressed vertebrate with a cement like substance and have started radiation to L5. I am finally starting to feel better even though the pain is now radiating down my right leg which they think my sciatic nerve is aggravated. Slowly but surely I'm feeling like myself again and they now have me walking with a walker and cane. Hopefully I will be getting out of here soon. I miss my babies! Keep your fingers crossed for me! Hope everyone is well!

Sorry to hear about your return to chemo, Blondie. According to my recent rise in tumor markers and bone scan my cancer has probably crept into my cervical spine (it's been in the lumbar spine for at least, 2 years). I've been on Faslodex and Zometa for 2 years but, if the "Beast" has attacked my C-spine, I'll be changing to Xeloda (instead of Faslodex). I'll be getting a CT scan to check the spine (plus, lungs and liver).
Macyhen, thanks for reminding us that we have many more options and longer lives than previous generations who faced metastatic cancer. I'm thankful for modern medicines yet, it would sure be a blessing to have a CURE. (((((Hugs and prayers to all of you)))))

And welcome Sunrise. All the best to your wife and congratulations on 40 years together.
Went to get my monthly Zolodex implant and was told that the oncologist was adament that I shouldn't have it until he saw me. So they're going to double check for me because initially, the oncologist thought he was going to see me in the next week or so, "after the CT scan" but the hospital said the CT scan won't be booked until late October. Sure don't want to come out of menopause for a few weeks and go back in! But as that's the biggest of my worries, then it shows how good life is indeed.
They've also stopped the infusions (Zometa) due to my jaw/bone issue. It's getting better, but still not healed. So all I'm taking now is Femara.
The hardest part (as you all can relate, I'm sure) is the waiting to find out what's going on. Good thing is that I have a lot on in October - deep sea fishing trip booked for the 12th, and a conference the week of the 21st in Rotorua (about 1/2 way up the North Island). And baby birds abound and the tulips are in bloom, so lots of photography planned for the next few weeks.

No help on why you're not getting the Zolodex, but you sound great otherwise. I don't have jaw issues, but I will be getting my last Aredia infusion at the end of October, after 2 years, in the hopes of those issues not developing. Glad you're going to Rotorua. Tauranga and Rotorua will be the first stop on our late December cruise, after leaving Auckland. I am getting so excited! Just have to get through my Oct. 7 PET scan.

I have a question that I've hesitated in asking. For the last month I've had pain in my right knee. In the beginning I put it down to strain - I have LE in my left side and often favour my left leg when it's swollen. On a visit to my GP, she decided to order an ultrasound. Had this, and it showed a cyst behind my knee. Apparently, a cyst is formed there only because of another issue, but the US didn't show what, so now I have to have an MRI. My concern now is I'm becoming more and more aware of a deep, continuous ache in my thigh just above my knee. I've just had a pet scan which was clear, but I know that they don't scan down so far. Anyone got any ideas?

Talk to you Dr. Nickyj, they scanned me from skull to knees, where they saw that I have osteoporosis in both knees and my back.

I have done, macyhen. My GP ordered the MRI and my onc was informed. I'll be having it Monday 7th. Not really too concerned about my knee, but the ache in my thigh is worrying me

I've had an ache in my mid thigh since last June and nothing showed on my bone scan in July. I'm having a bone scan tomorrow, so we'll see what happens. Also having CT scans on Wed but I don't think the pelvic scan will go down that far to my mid thigh. I'll ask though. Bone scans for me don't pick up all the cancer that ct's or mri's do. I'll be so glad when this week is over so I know what I'm dealing with. I just feel there is progression becuz I have more pain. It will be interesting to learn what does more pain mean. I'll know after these tests, it could mean nothing. Wouldn't that be great.

I do not post much on here but I do read posts frequently. My best to NickyJ. and Rangermom. I hope all turns out well. I have had many questions lately, and I guess many new issues in the last 3 months. The end of June I was having increasing pain in right hip area. Went on trip with family. Was uncomfortable most of it but glad we went. Returned from there and took 13 of 14 radiaition to right hip, with not improvements, and increased pain. Onc admitted me to hospital had more xrays then MRI ,that finally showed a pathologic fracture in my hip. From there had a rod and pin placed in hip. Pain much improved from that. So was thankful for that. From there started, chemo, cytoxin and adriamyacin, after insertion of a port which I don't think I would do without. I have many questions about (yes I am vain) how long will it take for my hair to grow back? I have had 3 treatments an have lost most of it except some in the back and a bit on top. If I comb it back behind my hats it looks like I have a bit of hair . And I don't feel so bald! Will I continue to lose more as I have more treatments? I have felt better and stonger the last few weeks since they changed my nausea meds and it chemo is more tolerable. No vomitting or no appetite. How many treatments do we normally get? I was having increased pain in my left leg but I think it is more because I was trying to use my leg more when trying to get rid of my crutches. I really don't like having to walk like I am 80 when I am 48, I am starting to go to Physical thereapy this week, which I had to beg for. Surgeons just say I will be ok . So that will be ok I am sure. I have been wearing Buff head wear and hats, What does everyone else prefer? I don't like the fake hair, ordered some and sent it back. Its not for me! just wanting more suggestions I guess. I guess not really that many questions just wanted to my story out there I guess. I have had days lately where I feel I have lost my self to all of this and am finding way back to me if that makes anysense at all. Thanks for listening or Reading I guess. Redroan
