Has anyone heard of "Beyond Breast Cancer"?

My DH said he saw it on a "pink ribbon" yogurt lid when he was in the store in Wisconsin. Knowing who I detest pink things and especially Komen, he tried to find out if there was any connection. He said there was advertising on TV there, too.

Was in panera tonight with Fl Warrior. They also had the pink ribbon notice up. 100% of proceeds of this bagel sales will go to Moffitt hosp in Tampa. That's a good thing, but it's one day only.

Denver's Komen race is tomorrow, seems to have less publicity than usual.  But still makes me so angry thinking about all those women racing "for a cure". I am recovering from my exchange surgery, which is much better than the expanders but not as easy as I was thinking it would be.  Feeling swollen and painful and some nausea isn't my idea of a great day let alone a cure!  What kind of cure is that?  We cut it all out but can only HOPE it doesn't come back!  I really hate pink today!

juliaanna - it might be Living Beyond Breast Cancer - http://www.lbbc.org/  It was started by Dr. Marisa Weiss, who also founded BCO.

Special K, I think you might be right about the name. I looked it up and found the list of sponsors and partners interesting. Thank you.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer does have some interesting sponsors.  Their metastatic breast cancer conference in April was really good.  While I am not a big fan of one of their sponsors, I did not realize until there that the sponsor that is so often disliked was responsible for all of the scholarships that helped women to go to the event.  They provide scholarships that cover 1/2 a room (expected to get a roommate) for each night and travel expenses.  For me, this was about $450, and I think a large number of the women there had received scholarships of some kind.  I dislike how much money they put into research, but I do think this is an important way that they help stage IV women that most don't know about.

That is not to say that I love pink (really dreading pinktober), but LBBC is a good organization to send money too as I learned so much at that conference.

I went to the Be Bold Be Bald FB page and put in my two cents.  Referred to myself as a "breast cancer survivor" (shudder, I hate that term), but I felt that it would give my post more "ooommph".  I imagine that it will be deleted pretty quickly, the whole page is devoted to "yay, hurray"-style idiodacy.

Three-and-a-half minutes.  That's how long it took for someone to remove my post outlining how offensive I found such a useless gesture from the Be Bold Be Bald page and how just helping out a breast cancer patient with day-to-day things during treatment would be much more appreciated.

Three-and-a-half minutes.  I guess they like their "pretty fun" way of "raising awareness".  Argh.  I could scream.  I think I'd have a bit (but just a bit) more respect for them if they were challenging people to actually shave their heads to raise money.  But THIS!?  This is ... I just don't have the words for this, it's so wrong on so many levels.  What on EARTH does wearing a "bald cap" accomplish?  Other than making fun of one of the more traumatic aspects of treatment?

BAH!!  I'm so mad, I could burst a blood vessel.  Need to go make myself a cup of tea and decompress.

Selena... Wow!!! Three and one half minutes.... I guess they must think it is better to be boldly bald than boldly thinking with a brain....

Well the pink is really going now.  I was watching "The Price Is Right" while getting my infusion today and EVERYONE in the audience was wearing some form of pink.  So many pink shirts I thought I was in a vat of Peptol Bismal.  I wonder if they're going to do that for the entire month....gag.

Selina-I have a thread on that bullshit

I responded to it 2x...I got a message from someone in charge of that thread

I ranted and raved like a crazy person and at the end I also said and yes I am a breast cancer survivor.please everyone check out that thread be bold,be bald..I was afraid I was gonna get kicked off FB.

Every single person in this world is aware...find a damn cure...

And where exactly does all that money go.

I really put them on the line AND about 1/2 hr later I went back and wrote funny no one has posted after this.

I was real evil but my post is still there...this was about 5days ago.

Granny - I don't think they shave their heads.  I think they wear a bald cap for the day and raise money for their act and "awareness."  What a joke!

  • FireKracker

Yeah what a joke is right.

Just glad I told them exactly how I feel.

    Granny DO NOT READ THIS

I like pink. I have 3 pink tshirts with Maltese on them. Spookie wears a lot of pink, her stroller and winter coat are pink plaid. I even have a pink car.

So today I'm wearing a Maltese shirt, it's more fuschia. The youngish woman ahead if me asks if I'm wearing it in support of bc. Um, no. This is a dog shirt. Well, it's bc awareness month!! Yes, I know. I've donated all I'm going to. Oh! You're a survivor! Congratulations! And shakes my hand.

And proceeds to tell me her mom is a 6 year survivor, is very active in fund raising, blah blah. I said all this pink crap really annoys me, and was her mom aware of how little of the $$ actually went towards research for a cure?

She pretty much shut down after that, I gave her something to tell her mom and to think about.

So I guess Spookie will be the only one in pink this month. At least SHE can't get bc, she had a hyster. At 5 months. And I can't drive my pink Mustang

I bought a really nice pale pink sweater a few years ago, before BC diagnosis. I did not buy it in support of anything, I just bought it because it was a nice pale pink, cotton cardigan, easy to get on and off as I was having hot flashes (which at the time I did not realize they were oh so mild compared to what I have gone through with BC treatment! - but I digress), and it looked good with my shirts, skirts, and pants. I tend to dress a little bit British cardigan or a little bit preppy jackets. In any case, it sits in my drawer, not being worn, but I just cannot bear to get rid of it because I really truly like it. So I am thinking maybe for Easter next spring I might get it out again ... would that offend anyone here? Would it offend ME? I really hate that pink has been hijacked by corporate greed.

I'd say you could wear it the other 11 months of the year. My pink tshirts won't be worn any more this month. Spookie will be the only one in pink here this month.

Apparently if you cross and pumpkin and a squash you can get a pinkish looking pumpkin......I'm sure there is nothing more important that scientists could be working on......

Hi Ladies, here is a good film to watch on Pink Month.  You can rent it on Itunes for $6 I think.  It is an eye-opener.  Please don't get me wrong,,,i totally support awareness...but think pink month is becoming a real marketing scheme for companies to make money off our disease.

WHERE can I get a shirt!!?????
