I'm not working so I wanted to do something I couldn't normally do if I were working. I was going to have put pink highlights and then realized that it was October. So no pink hair until November.

Hi all! Been lurking a while. For me, I love the color pink (sorry, it's just a color), and I have a lot of clothes with pink because I look good in pink, get gets of compliment. So glad you opened my eyes to the whole pink ribbon thing, have totally changed my mind about pink ribbons. (DH had a pretty charm designed with a ribbon as an honor, now what to do? He meant it as a sign of love and that he was proud of me for what I have gone thru)
I responded to Be Bald, Be Brave too, we'll see how long it lasts. That totally infuriates me, feels liking they're mocking all our pain.0 -
2nd, take the gift in the spirit in which it was offered, then put it in a drawer until November,

Thanks Ruth, voice of common sense!

Hi Sisters! I haven't posted in forever but have been catching up some. I read back several pages the post from "TheDevineMrsM" 10 reasons that the pink ribbon has lost it's appeal! It was spot on! So I went to my FB page found it & shared!
This month is knowing about the "REAL FACTS" not the "Pink" tinted ribbon kind! It's about Grandmothers, Mothers, Sisters, Aunts, Nieces, Cousins, Family, Friends, & Yes Men they get it too! It's about Lives....about Living & staying alive! Being WELL!
This Year I have lost Friends (close & not so close) to this Dreaded "SH"! Also to many other types of Cancer! Some are now going through the Process of being DX with these other types of cancer. Some like us with BC have had there 3erd DX/progression this year & are now stage 4! THIS is what it's about.....but I don't need to tell My Sisters this they already know! Group HUGS! Thanks for being YOU & ALL your UNIQUENESS!

Today, as always, 8 of us went out to lunch after Bible Study.
One woman's sister had just had a mastectomy yesterday. The topic turned to breast cancer.
Have to admit I got on my soapbox. Those dear ladies got an earful, and I doubt if any of them will be suckered in by pinkwashing this month.
One made a remark that "so much money goes to research, why don't we have a cure?" and I had to tell her that when corporate executives make six-figure salaries, and 80% of public donations go to administrative costs, MAYBE there's some money left for some free mammograms, but then again, maybe not.
They asked what the answer was. I said that in my opinion, we needed to change the focus of what "AWARENESS" means.
I'm pretty @($# sure I am "aware" of breast cancer, as are most people who have not lived on a deserted island for the past 50 years.
But we need more awareness of the grim statistics that are still dismal after years of peppy pink campaigns, the pinkwashing of all consumable goods in the month of October, and the need for specific funding to specific legitimate research organizations.
And while we're learning all those things, don't stop by saying "I'm Aware!" or "I Support Finding A Cure!" How about getting off your butt and actually DOING something for a woman going through BC, whether it's doing all those small chores or just sticking close by no matter what the diagnosis?
Dang, does anyone remember the TV show "Designing Women" and how Julia Sugarbaker would get on her soapbox about something that eventually turned into a five minute RANT? I seem to be doing that a lot these days.
But I try to remember what a dear friend told me long ago: "When you're struck by the blatant ignorance of others, err on the side of love. Find teachable moments." So I try.

Pink stinks!!!!!0 -
I got my shirt from Allied Shirts. It's a black t-shirt with pink letters with the saying:
Breast Cancer...
We have awareness...
Now where's the cure?
Fund life-saving research...
Not marketing!

Aaoaao....Love your shirt!!!
I went to my PCP office yesterday to get the shingles vaccine and flu shot. I wore my Pink Stinks shirt. The MA that welcomed me was wearing all pink. She looked at me kinda funny...but I explained things to her and she was "onboard". So I hope I will be fully immune from shingles and this year's strain of flu, as I go for my BMX on 10/23.

i was on my soapbox yesterday. I gave me girlfriends a little pink rank yesterday. We are doing the run for the cure (toronto) this sunday and one of them (innocently) asked if maybe we should all have some sort of pink matching get-up (tutus, tights, hats you know the crap). Well, I went off on them! I felt badly after and told them they could get their pink on but I will NOT be wearing a boa, tutu, hairbow or the like. Im all for raising money for RESEARCH but there is ZERO pink or pretty about this disease. I have the scars and banged up body to prove it.
granny - i went on that bald site (sorry cant remember the name) and sent them a comment on how it is a disgusting way to raise money. Being bald was a horrible testement to the ugliness of this disease and wearing a bald cap trivializes what we went through

Last year b/c of pinktober, I started a thread to evaluate organizations that say they are associated with breast cancer. To be objective I used four questions developed by Breast Cancer Action. BCA is a political action group based in California. The questions are very good.
To answer the questions it takes allot of researching. I only did a few b/c my life became choas again. It's a very interesting approach. If anyone's interested in picking an organization and applying the questions, your work would be very appreciated.
If you want to know where the money goes for an organization, these questions will lead to an answer
I'd be available as a coach on the research steps. PM me if your interested. Sassy

This is a portion of a PM to a member that wants to do some research. I put a portion of it here. Two reasons: 1. It indicates there is a process. 2. I won't forget the parts of the process LOL.
I was amazed how much time it took to answer the questions objectively. I think you can feel the quandry in the review of the organization associated with Estee Lauder. To come to the relatively short answer took hours of reading and following the "breadcrumbs" to an answer.
On the other hand when you look at TETWP. It clearly identidfies how they fit within the scheme of things.
One step thats fun, is after completing as much research as I needed to understand an organization. I called to talk to the highest person in the organization that I could.
The woman that runs TETWP is a beautiful person. I forget the conversation with BCRF person. Maybe it will come back to me when we talk
1. We will review the questions
2.I'll show you the archive thread where you can keep your notes as you gather info.
3.Talk about Charity Navigator. Intergal to the $$$ evaluation.
4. We will talk about how to "get" to the chief honcho or verifying sources with questions developed from your research.
5. You pick the organization you wish to evaluate.
I think I'll post some of this on the thread sassy

Just saw a commercial here in Ontario where a toilet paper company is "raising awareness" for breast cancer by hosting a fashion show where all the garments are made of ... you guessed it! Toilet paper.
GAH!0 -
drove past a hair salon this afternoon, had a sign on property, add a pink streak for bc awareness.0 -
Guess I put my pink hair chalk away for the duration. But have 6 other colors.0

granny will get ya! Heh heh!0 -
Pink is pretty, breast cancer isn't....
Pinked cancer still kills.......0 -
I am still gonna donate to BCO.

Thanks for your kind words, grannydukes! I just love your feistiness!!!

I ran into a BC sister yesterday. (She was a few years ahead of me with her dx, had the whole shebang - surgery, chemo, rads.)
She was dressed in her sparkly pink BC cap, her pink ribbon survivor pin, her pink ribbon necklace, and some other pink ribbon tchotchkes.
She asked if I were going to do the Komen race later this month. I found it difficult to explain how odious the whole "Pinktober" thing was to me, and how especially nauseating the Komen pink circus was, especially with all its Made In China merchandise thrown at the survivors.
How does everyone else feel when they discuss this with other BC sisters who have wholeheartedly supported the entire pink tsunami?0 -
hmmm haven't really run into that, yet. I guess I'd ask if she knows how little $$ is actually used for research, big CEO paychecks, etc. if says yes, agree to disagree. Maybe she's a party girl?0 -
did lot of driving listening to radio today. got so annoyed with all these bc fundraisers etc.
i am going to help Sas investigate some of these organizations. want to know exactly where the money is going. havepicked komen as my organization to investigate. looking forward to finding the truth.
i really dont understand why all this money is put to education and awareness.0
