How come prior to my BC journey not one message from my insurance company under Health Tips on the Statement of Benefits did I ever get "Mammograms are recommended for early detection of breast cancer. Women 40 and older should discuss with their physician how often they should have one. If it has been more than a year for you, contact your doctor to discuss today." Then starting in July through October of that year and every year since this message comes on my statements. Hubby who carries the insurance gets different messages. Do they not look at their records?! I chose BMX with no recon. There is nothing there. This irks me terribly.

Kiki - "Maybe all that "awareness" should include "compassion". Beautifully put and sadly lacking, in general. Thank you.

A couple of things here Ladies. 1st, I when asked for donations, I always tell them I already donated my breast, but thanks for asking. 2nd, I have to fight the urge not to stop at a house that has a breast cancer flag, or worse, pink garbage can, and tell them thank you for making me aware I have cancer every time I drive down the street; even on those days where I manage to forget it for awhile. 3rd, there is one organization I am aware of that does help cancer patients monitarily. They are in seven states, I think. It's called Pink Ribbon Riders (and yes, they do pink), and they give $500 to a patient to use as they see fit. When they had more money, you could get it two years, but now, with lower funds, it's only once. Some use it for bills, gas, etc. One lady used it to buy a washer, because she was no longer able to haul the laundry baskets to the laundry mat after her surgeries. You can find them on Facebook and online. Jody has only a couple of part-time employees and she volunteers her time. They are awesome!

I did a thread the other day. Don't think I posted it here. Donations for BCO.

Pinktober started here about a month ago. So sick of it already. One ad tells us that over 30% of BC is related to lifestyle, but the way they say it blames all of us for getting this. GG

County fair & the children decorated their horses to raise money for Komen. I stayed silent. I saw no purpose in ruining their excitement.

Do we really need more awareness?

Current stats are something like one in twelve women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. With stats like that it seems to me everyone is already aware of this crappy disease since almost everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed. In my own life there is me, my mother (deceased due to BC), my sister-in-law, a former co-worker, my husband's aunt (diagnosed years ago, now in her 90s w dementia, but no recurrence of bc).

We need a cure or even better a way to prevent breast cancer, but no more awareness, thank you!

Forget about awareness let's get rid of this disease. Finding it early may help but it might not matter either.

Cancer is brutal and figure it out already!

Wow labelle completlely agree! Everyone knows at least one person affected by bc. Most people know more. For me it's my aunt, two cousins, 2 friends and one of the friends sister. Can't we do better than this?My dear cousin passed away from this dreaded disease 20 years ago. Unfortunately I don't feel that things have changed a whole lot. I often wonder if this was a mans disease that things would be different. Awareness is not the issue. Prevention and cure are.....

Dtad and Labelle - couldn't have said it better myself.

Our local ACS office has a bunch of signs posted on the perimeter of its lot promoting cancer education, etc. One of them reads "Cancer Hates Healthy Lifestyles."

Having led an extremely healthy lifestyle, only to be dx. with stage 2 disease, that really stuck in my craw. I called them and told them I didn't think the meant to promote a 'blame the victim' belief and that those of us with cancer found it pretty offensive. I doubt they'll do anything about it but I hope their awareness has been raised.

hopeful what would a little graffiti do?

That healthy thing is catching on. We need to get a strategy and a counter phrase

Hmmm. How to counteract the "just be healthy!" campaign? Let me think about this. But it does get up my nose about as far as the 'positive thinking' one.

Queenmomcat - The whole positive thinking business chafes my last nerve, too! I'm SO glad to know I'm not the only one. ;)

"And yet some people still get cancer despite healthy lifestyles."

Hopeful: no, you're far from being alone in this! Just from what little I've seen here on the BCO boards, so many women (and a few men) who've seen only that positive facade are left blindsided by the fear, devastation, anger they feel. Is it healthy to stay that way, to feed it? No. But it's normal to feel it.

Queenie, can you breathe with both of them up your nose? Positive right nares, and healthy lifestyle left nares. Should I do mouth to mouth?

Yeah they can bite me with that healthy Lifestyle bullshit. My brother was just dx'd with kidney cancer. He is the absolute poster boy for healthy lifestyle lived that way his entire life. Poor guy when he catches on to the bullshit and the garbage people will be saying to him.

We need a plan on the Healthy lifestyle Posters etc. I'm for ripping them down and using spray paint. But also don't want to get arrested.

Would love to know who started that crap. We could abduct them and tie them up in pink duct tape. See against the law that would be kidnapping.

BTW the word crap to me is as foul a word as fuck is too others. I'm hot.

There was a stupid study that came out within last year(6 mos) about positive attitudes. Dismissed it. Maybe we need to find it a rip them a new one. Total bias.

aa....aaaa......AAAA...CHOOO! (snert. snort. honks into a continent-sized handkerchief) No, thanks. I can breathe, for now. Let me get back to you on that.

Healthy lifestyle be bleeped. Sometimes cancer just happens. And Positive Thinking isn't helping. (My sympathies to you and your brother. Having cancer myself is one thing. What my husband is going through, and what I and my sister are going through on our father's behalf? Awful. Because there's nothing we can do but watch our family member suffer through the decision, and the treatment, and the effects.)

No, I think duct taping whomever came up with that bleep to their own posters would probably get us arrested for GBH. My husband has been giving me grief, in a loving way, about being a HULK SMASH type personality even without the gamma-ray radiation. I inherited this from my mother, who inherited this from her mother. [various family stories redacted]. Now I'm winding up all that frustration, all that energy, to deal with Pinktober.

  • meow13
    meow13 Member Posts: 1,363

Cancer really has very little to do with health. I was never in better shape exercising eating really well at 123 pounds 5 feel 4 inches tall age 53. I get so angry at this live healthy and you won't get cancer bullshit. Nothing makes me madder than somehow it is the cancer victims fault

Stealing the lemons' post too. Read it to my 22 year old. His response "or squirt the juice in their eyes". We're a little rambunctious tonight.

I have so many friends that eat horribly, drink to excess, and never exercise and they are fine. I do none of those and have it. My SIL eats perfectly, exercises, etc. and she has cholesterol over 300. My sister who was never over weight, and has always eaten healthfully (long before it was fashionable) and is a total gym rat just found out she has high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries has begun. I think it's all just one big cosmic crap shoot. Smh

And while we're on the topic of lemons, I found this little nugget helpful: When life hands you lemons, go out and find someone that life gave vodka!
