Sas, yes that's me in the picture.

The reason I left my comment on their product page is that I had good response getting Ulta to respond and eventually set up a phone meeting using the same strategy. But in that case, several other people complained in the same area of their page and they couldn't ignore it. I ended up having a productive telephone with them. In this case, nobody else complained there, so I agree, it's no threat as it is.

I kind of like to try different things and come at them from different angles. Sort of ninja warrior style, haha. I have to say that I started out hurt and pissed off. Now I feel much better and actually enjoy making the lemmings scurry a little. Target practice. I read what everyone has done here, and you all have inspired ME. sometimes you get no response, but sometimes a single letter or conversation can change things.

And as you very rightly say, you drop a pebble in the water. We don't know where it ends. If you inspire one person, as YOU DID by starting this thread, there's bound to be chain reactions far beyond what we can grasp individually.

It's hard to keep up with all the interesting posts here lately. Must be the end of the month approaching!

Sas. A search of BCO using the word "sexualization" certainly shows this Pinktober Revolution thread as leading the BCO conversation on this important topic.

A Google search shows a fair bit of discussion is out there. BCaction.com has discussed the topic HERE. And UBCF has an article HERE. This interesting article from The Daily Texan HERE was published two years ago.

Also, this may be the first year on BCO that the male breast cancer patient's perspective has been given an extended airing outside of the 'male' section of the site. Let me tell you, there's not much talk of anything there.

As a man, it's is a pretty amazing experience negotiating the world of pink, but the support here has made me realise that, regardless of gender, we all face the various challenges with more or less the same degrees of zeal and empathy.

just read the Huffington Post article. Had one hell of a good laugh. First look at the blogger. Paltrow has some crazy ideas she likes to pass off as truth. Hmm, now to the bra thing. Never tucked my cell phone in my bra and always took the wires out if I bought those types. Let's face it they really don't give support if you wore a large cup.

When will we get beyond the voodoo "science"? Plus, I feel there is so much duplicity in research that a cure/prevention will not happen in my lifetime and wonder if it will happen in my DDs lifetimes.

Article on what Joe Biden is going to do....work on cancer cure:

    http://www.bostonglobe.com/2015/10/21/biden-calls-...

He is one of those very few national figures with the experience and following to accomplish something here, especially if he can be convinced to put his efforts behind research for metastatic cancer. And experience gathering bipartisan support--to the extent that it can be done in these polarized times. We should all write to him.

this has been a really enlightening discussion. I have learned a lot from it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Travel text , I just wanted to let you know that I saw a graphic of the modified pink ribbon, with the blue dot, in the Australian Financial Review yesterday. I love it. The article also caught the attention of a couple of my male 2ics and over coffee today we had a chat about the blue dot and the risks for men. I am pretty open with my colleagues about my condition (I have a senior leadership role and my absences for treatment have had to be explained to some extent) and while I don't focus on my bc experience, most of my female colleagues know they can ask me questions and I will try to answer. To have the guys raise this subject today was a fabulous opportunity to share information. Thank you for your effort in this.

With regard to the overall bc message......and how pinktober represents it.......there is clearly a long way to go for both men and women. The efforts of the contributors here are truly amazing and sincerely appreciated.

Traveltxt Yes, you are the first man to be here. You're research skills are an important addition too :). Interesting that we are the leader on sexualization.

Sula, I do think you were the first to mention it. I know when I read your first post on it. It made me think Yeah go girl. Well apparently you started something :)

Rainny, Biden will do well in his role. Perhaps he will be like Jimmy Carter.

I did have a thought over night. The way to get the real scoop on HL/weight and BC is find that researcher that debunked the psych study. The ripple from his action has affected research around the world. Even though the press didn't give it much notice. I will try and locate him and give him a call.

yesterday I took my dog for a therapy visit to the cancer center and ended up talking to the head onc nurse.

She shared with me this link and organization whose goal is legislation and clear plans to end breast cancer by 2020. She told me there is a bill in both the House and Senate right now that has a very small chance of passing, (she says the rate of all bills passing us about 1 in 10) but any support will be helpful. Her take on things is all the pink and awareness have normalized the perception of breast cancer and taken the sense of urgency away from finding a cure or even a way to manage it as a chronic disease.

Reading the specific goals and timelines of this .org made me realize the close connection between fighting the pink and supporting meaningful legislation.

    Worth a read:

If any of you have developed a taste for activism during this month of October, the above organization also offers a number of free online opportunities/courses to learn, for beginners or those more experienced, how best to shake things up. They have many free in person symposium as well, and have taken the best from those inpresenting the free on line training.

    http://www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org/get-involv...

ETA: this organization was started by a woman who was diagnosed at age 39 with BC. She was a heavy hitting lawyer in a large Philadelphia law firm. She quit her job and started advocating to end breast cancer.

Googled keywords "sexualization of breast cancer". Two BCO mentions.. One on page 19 that had a broken link, but was not to this topic. One on page 26 that linked to this page. They're were 43,100 results.. Google keywords "sexualization of prostate cancer" had 51,000 hits. The articles on the first page of the prostate question mostly included breast in the phrase description along with prostate.

I realize that it's pulling on all three words. But the pull was pretty definitive, because I substituted keywords to " breast cancer" and that elicited 129,000,000 results. While we are very aware of this as a problem the rest of the world isn't.

I will put Traveltxt's links in the topic box. I will also put the count of 43,100. I will periodically revisit those keywords to see what happens.

I just went to the American Cancer Society's Facebook page and posted this:

"Can anyone here explain why the ACS continues to partner with the cosmetics industry in giving out toxic cosmetics in their look Good Feel Better goody bags? We are not children. We don't need free (carcinogenic) gifts. We need reliable information about how to protect ourselves from toxins in our personal environments! Please, ACS, think about your role in the LGFB program and make some healthy changes!"

Anyone feel like rattling their cage today?

Here is a link to their FB page. My post is in the "visitor post" section. Even a few "likes" would help

    https://www.facebook.com/AmericanCancerSociety

Good work on the sexualuxation of BC Sas. We need to not let go of that either. I feel the LGFB is related since the ACS seems to feel we are more concerned with having nice eyebrows than saving our lives.

    Totally revising topic box.

I bolded the vision statement. I started to revise it, but I think we have many wordsmiths here that can do a better job. Any volunteers? The original one is too wordy.

    Love the 'Bingo' idea!

Stupid 20-something colleagues (the kind who take sickies for hayfever) decided to organise a 'Wear it Pink' day at work. One of them (who knows I have cancer) even said we should be allowed to come to work in our pyjamas, preferably pink, as 'having cancer is the occasion to pamper yourself'!!!!!!! I really really felt like slapping her in the face. Basically that idiot is playing at having breast cancer: such a wonderful opportunity to get attention from others, presents from your family, and of course... holidays!!!

Travel- great meme! Stealing it for my FB page.

There is a lively discussion on the ACS FB page about them standing behind the cosmetics industry. They are not coming off too well. Actually said they believe the benefits outweigh the risks. I don't think they should be taking risks with my health because they are in bed with a toxic industry.

I am rattling the ACS FB cage again this morning. Visitor posts. Please join me.

The answer I got to my question yesterday was a re-run of an old press release, standing behind the FDA and the "self-regulating" of the cosmetics industry. What hogwash.

They actually said the benefits (of their toxic products) outweighed the risks. How is it they feel morally or any other way qualified to evaluate my risk?

There was a lively discussion yesterday before the list got buried.....on purpose?

If you are on face book, you can like or comment on the post. Thanks for any support.

Sas. Comments welcome on this version of the vision statement.

October each year is a bad time for breast cancer survivors, since the trivialisation and sexualization of the disease by well-meaning groups and the commercial exploitation of the pink dollar by some companies, has reached unacceptable heights. What started as a month of aweness-raising has developed into an exercise in pink washing that obscures the true extent of the processes used in treating the cancer, leads men to believe that it is exclusively a women's disease, and obscures the fact that there is no cure for breast cancer.

Therefore, we wish to bring a full awareness to the reality of the disease to the general public, and ensure that there is transparency in where the proceeds donated end up, the percentage going to reputable medical institutions looking for cures, and the funds publicly accounted for. Where possible, monies raised should be distributed in an appropriate manner to the community in which the funds were raised. As well, corporations must be held accountable for the suitability of the pink products they sell, and their staff trained in dealing with customers who question their sales motives and end use of the funds donated.

Woke up this morning to find pink ribbons stapled to the trees at the entrance to the park across the street. Apparently the local police precinct is doing a walk and festival across the street on Sunday to show support for breast cancer survivors and to build awareness of the need to get screened. It seems to be part of a citywide initiative on the part of the NYPD: http://nypdnews.com/2015/10/the-nypdbluegoespink-f...

The odd thing is that I can't really find any evidence that they're fundraising, just showing support. You can bet I'll be out there on Sunday asking questions!

editing my words: We support the efforts to bring awareness to breast cancer during the month of October, but we are frustrated by Pinking and Pinkwashing. Please, join us as we seek to improve knowledge re: breast cancer.
