All, I suggest education versus anger. NYPD is trying to do a good thing. The bandwagon for pinking has been going on for about 20 years. The general public hasn't a clue that it is offensive to us. We need to not make everything crash, before we figure out how we use their energy. Ask questions, but don't strike down so hard that they turn the other way.

Sassy: well, that's it. This is a community goodwill exercise, and I was joking about being so aggressive as to be arrested. I mean, I could do without the pink, but when I talk to them I would only want to educate rather than antagonize if there is an opportunity. Though someone on their FB page asked why they are not raising money for 9/11 1st responders who've developed cancer as a result. And you know? That's an excellent question!

Which raises a another question I'd like to see asked more often: is it possible that by uniting activists for different kinds of cancer, we might achieve more for metastatic disease? Calling Mr. Biden...

Went to a named discount store with one of my DDs who was bra shopping. Forgot to note the brand on one of the bras but it had a tag on it with a pink ribbonthat said "Awareness Bra". Give me a break.

Rainny, Well, that may be what happens. Bidden is a decent man. His life may influence the future like Jimmy Carters influence on that worm. Carter's leadership has lead to almost a total wipeout of a public health problem in Africa. Biden lost his son. He knows the distress of diagnosis, treatment, remission, and return, and death.

Now that Biden has come out with his plan to lead, it makes his loss even more public. Biden has been mourning. Deciding. He will be a leader into the future. I'm very happy he has decided as he has. Not b/c it's politically correct. He is following the memory of is son. We all know what that means to our hearts.

It's a draft vision statement that needs more editing, but one which encapsulates many of the concerns of the people posting on this thread.

Biden also lost his first wife and daughter tragically on December 18, 1972. A week before Christmas. The daughter was 13 months old. He knows sadness.

Kathi- that may take the "tasteless of the day" award.

    What was it, the "gladyoustillhavethemmodel"?

There's this on the New York Police Department website:

The NYPD is going Pink to show support to breast cancer survivors and to help raise awareness. With over 2.8 million survivors in the United States, many members of the Department have been touched directly, or indirectly, by the disease. From October 1st – October 30th there will be a Department-wide effort for the police and the community to work hand-in-hand to spread the word about breast cancer and early detection. As a part of the "Pinkest Precinct" contest, participating commands will come up with unique ways to promote breast cancer awareness and share their support on social media.

    More to come....

Many organizations really hype up that early detection angle. Apparently, they think that is the answer. Just get the women to find bc early and all will be well. Doesn't require much effort for the organizers. This is where they're believing early detection equals cure. And they don't want it to be more complicated than that, because it would require more work, more critical thinking and maybe they wouldn't feel as successful in raising awareness

    Divine, nicely defined.

It's basically the end of the month. Things here tend to stop until , generally, August the following year. Doesn't mean it has to, just saying it's been the trend..

I am hoping to have an op-Ed published as my "last stand" for pinktober 2015. But by no means am I stopping. I'll keep you posted.

Yes, the big pink promotions around here seem to be at the beginning of October and the hoopla and all the media coverage has died down. Now the shift is to Halloween costumes, candy and which stores will open on Thanksgiving...and stores selling all manner of snowmen and Christmas decor.

I think we made some inroads when it comes to educating others on bc awareness month. I gained insight myself and will consider writing another letter next year to the editor of the local paper. Just in my previous post, I realized that many people in fact do want a quick fix and don't want bothered with anything to complicated. I have a year to get my thoughts in order!

Hi JackB, Oh please post the op-ed when you get it. I didn't think you would JackieB. Your energy is in the stratosphere. Just to let you know it does tend to get quiet here. But that maybe different this year with you here :)

    To all:

I revised the Charity list thread. ENTIRELY LOL. I even asked the Mods to change the name. When I originally did it. I felt strongly about the "Think before you Pink" program from BCA. But the thread never worked. I finally realized that was because the BCA questions apply to a non charitable organization and I was trying to make them work for a charitable organization.

I kind of doubt the thread will ever be useful, but it's in better shape than before. I may scrape it next year and just do another thread and transfer the existing posts. I dislike all the blue lines that can't be erased. It was a learning process, a tough learning process

The intention of the charitable thread is to have a place where someone can look for the organizations that we've contacted. They're been many contacted this season, but the pages have flown by. It would be difficult for members to see what members here have done.

So, please, take a look at the thread topic box. My gut reaction is to take the topic box info and make a new thread and transfer posts. Think of the thread as a repository for your work, but has a format. Thanks

I never reported back on my conversation with the NYPD on Sunday. It went surprisingly well, though I'm not sure how much will come of it. I asked who was in charge of the event and was referred to a young policewoman. I explained that I was a BC patient and that I was curious if they were fundraising or just building awareness. The fundraising they'd done (it was a precinct by precinct effort) was entirely on the part of the cops themselves. They were going to donate it to ACS, and I mentioned a couple of other options, much discussed here, as effective in funneling money to research. Well, the young woman said "come with me," and dragged me to a lieutenant who was coordinating the whole thing. So I repeated my spiel, with the original policewoman saying things like, "see, that's what I've been saying!" It turns out that she lost her mother to BC, hence her sincere interest. I did say, too, that I thought that very local charities that helped women who couldn't pay for medical treatment would also be a terrific option. This particular police precinct encompasses both 2-3 million dollar brownstones and housing projects (I live in neither, for the record--just a middle-class working stiff!), so there are many people in our nabe who can't afford even basic treatment.

I was blindsided early this month by the need to shop for a new insurance company--as our Obamacare coop was folded by the state--so have not been as active on this topic as I should have been. And that is another whole area of activism: the gaps in healthcare coverage. Will try to do more next October, and in the intervening months. Still shopping for a good plan, but I do plan to write a letter to Mr. Biden, for starters!

Rainny-well done! I am amazed and inspired by your efforts, sincere, eloquent, and apparently effective.

I'd like to note that you are only weeks out from a huge, life-altering surgery, and still in active treatment. Many, probably most of us, don't get involved with advocacy until the smoke has cleared and the ringing in our ears has stopped. For some of us that takes a long time, and that is very ok.

For you to have done what you did shows what a beautiful, warm, and STRONG woman you are. I'm proud to count you among my acquaintances. And I'd love to call you friend.

Divine, you have a way with words lady :). I agree the hoopla is at the beginning of the month. The shift to other things has started occurred.

JackieB when you have time read from the beginning. It's been a growth process. The first year we were doing T-shirt slogans. Frankly, I think I came up with "Cancer Is Not A Marketing Opportunity." I know I hadn't seen it when I wrote it. It was radical when I wrote it. I even hesitated wearing the t-shirt. BUT the very first day I wore it, I stopped at a local insurance company that had a big sign "Save the Ta'Ta's , Breast Cancer Insurance sold here". It was kinda strange. I went in, the receptionist was on the phone and kept saying she'd be with me in a minute. I had an appointment and had to go. I said "Read the shirt". She nodded. I wrote a note (paraphrase) "We in the breast cancer community don't appreciate Ta-Ta's, we find it offensive". I left. Drove by there after appointment about two hours later. Sign was changed. I wrote a note to corporate. Gave accolades to the local office for being so cooperative, and got the message across to the top level folks suggesting they think about making it a corporate directive.

Then when I started seeing the "marketing" slogan showing up made me wonder. Never know. One of the other t-shirts I've never worn. "What Color Do You Associate With Dead, Breast Cancer Kills". Today, it may not seem so radical, but even a few years ago it was.

Katy, you are an example to all of us. Frankly, it makes me feel better to be doing something. And I'm proud to call you friend!

    I love this:

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me?

But if I am only for myself, who am I?

    If not now, when?"

Rainny I looked up that quote Rabbi Hillel. it triggered a memory, it's unrelated.

In a moment this month, I wrote the President on the Whitehouse web site. It was after reading of yet another member here going broke, and another friend having difficulty b/c Obamacare company dropping care. Said I was active here but not representing BCO. I sent a note to the Mods to let Weiss know on the far outside chance the Whitehouse responded, I didn't want her to get blindsided.

Almost off on a rant...............I'd need more wine to do it justice.

    Lovely quote Rainny. A keeper.

Sas- I have taken a peek back, as you suggested. It makes me realize you were even more if a visionary than even I realized! Also reminded me personally, once again, that while cancer was growing unawares in my body, I was like everyone else. No time or desire to take this issue seriously. It's a good reminder for me when I'm impatient with people who don't get it.

I think you could definitely wear the "dead" tee shirt today. Maybe crash a Komen event next year! If they're still around. Ha! Who am I kidding?

Love your t-shirts idea Schatzi. Still seething from 'support breast cancer' day at work, especially as they're still discussing it. Yesterday they were discussing bacon and red meat and one of my colleagues said 'People get cancer because of their physiognomy' (she meant 'genes'), 'lifestyle doesn't matter'. Really helpful.

it strikes me that we ought toset a date- maybe somebody in marketing or PR could tell us when would be best- I'm thinking we should start our letters and agitating in May or June nexr year, before all the pink chit gets put in place? Ads, campaigns, etc.

Probably Wacoal. They mean well (each of these “Awareness” bras comes with a hangtag on how to do BSE, and they probably don’t know how little of what they donate to Komen from the sales of these actually ends up funding research or helps b.c. patients). Personally, it makes me “aware” that Wacoal bras don’t fit me.
