Pinktober Revolution

So on my phone I've put information about appropriate places to donate money for breast cancer research. Then, when someone tells me about their plans to participate in the world of Pinkcancer, I can suggest an alternative. Also, I've got the link to the trailer for Pink Ribbons on there that I can share with someone.
Another thing -- I've got a copy of the Chronic Illness Bingo on my phone. If I'm feeling really ornery, I might play bingo when anyone says something that ticks me off. haha.

So what places are on your phone, Blinkie? That's a great way to keep the info handy. You can even text it to someone who is interested.

ShetlandPony started an excellent thread last Puketober - somehow I missed it!
Looking for Pinktober Alternative buttons, shirts, charities
I found several places online with great shirts. I will post the links there.
For posting on FaceBook, email sharing or DYI posters/shirts here's a few things.....Plus a Bingo Game to add to the Chronic Illness Game

Yay for METUP!
Metavivor and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation are also tops for contributing to research.

ShetlandPony - I have on my list the local research hospital where I go for treatment and would be glad to hear of other research entities that are worth supporting. Also on my list are Breast Cancer Recovery (www.bcrecovery.org) which is not a research group but provides help with emotional support through retreats and events. BCO, of course. & I think I'll add metup.org.
shepkitty - Thanks so much for your posts. I love the MBC bingo. I put that on my phone too, along with the other images.
Traveltext - As usual, your posts are full of info. Thanks.

There is one Pinktober promotion that is valid: Estee Lauder is selling a makeup palette in a zippered case, and donating 100% of sales (NOT just “profits”) to Breast Cancer Research Foundation. (Of course, I don’t know whether it contains carcinogens or endocrine disruptors…)

Hmmm, looks like a good one ChiSandy, perhaps our resident expert on carcinogens in cosmetics, Jackbirdie, can come back this year and let us know about the contents of this product.

This is an interesting article on Pinktober from a mets patient's perspective: HERE.

Thanks for the reminder on Bridge Balthus, they are a top cancer charity with a high benefit per dollar donated.

Just a nice gesture for today.

Thanks Spookiesmum, it's nice to see generosity and practical assistance for caregivers. Without their attention and dedication we'd be much worse off.

I appreciate this thread so much!!

This I found on the Facebook page of The Grace Project.
With Pink October (breast cancer month) coming up... lets face it, there are a lot of scams out there in the name of the color pink... forget about purchasing that pink pair of dishwashing gloves at the supermarket..., here are a few suggestions that I have for donations that truly help the cause...... Donate to one or all... and please share...
1. http://metavivor.org The only organization that I know of that 100% of income goes to research. They focus on finding a cure for Stage iv. This is how we can truly save lives.
2. The Underbelly, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-underbelly-changing-breast-cancer-narratives-magazine#/backersThe newest, hippest most informative online magazine, inspiring and informing women with regards to breast cancer... highlighting both the positive and the negative. Currently they are doing their crowd funding campaign... please click over to support this new and important endeavor.
3. Cancerland: http://cancerland.tv/donate.html Outreach and advocacy... Grace Goddess Champagne Joy doing incredible and even outrageous and informative stuff from posing for the Grace project to meeting with politicians... to create awareness and inform.
4. Shay Sharpe's Pink wishes http://shaysharpespinkwishes.org... granting wishes to women under 40 with terminal breast cancer.
5. and of course the Grace project... Love the images you are seeing on this page? Support a project that empowers women to come to terms with their bodies post breast cancer... We do it on a shoestring, but we want to hit 800 portraits so we can show the world what one day of breast cancer diagnosis in the United States look like. Lets keep it going http://the-grace-project.org/#download

So I posted how I thought this was silly esp since cancer doesn't cause baldness....etc. I've been booted from posting anymore. lol. I bet this is a scam!

I think they're legit Artista, you can read their history HERE.
And the charities they help HERE.
They say: "Since its inception, we have raised close to three-quarters of a million dollars to support more than 40 cancer organizations."
You could ask them why you got booted from the FB page by contacting them HERE.

I'm not going to bother, text. They are giving out the sense that cancer = baldness. Such misinformation to do with something big like cancer angers me to no end. I'm sure they deleted my posts too. So be it.

Agree Artista, that's a terrible cliche. Unfortunately that group have built their brand around bald in the same way as bc charities go for pink. Need for some more originality IMO.

Oct has always been my fav month. I love fall the best and the colors, and Halloween- my fav holiday. With all this pink crap it's making me want to get to Nov asap! I feel robbed in more than 1 way now.

Hi to all. I had posted recently on the Pinktober thread and Traveltext provided a link to this thread as well, so here I am. I was quite active on the subject last year.
What I mentioned on the other thread is that in my area, there's not a lot of pink promotions going on this year, at least not yet. Last year it began middle of September. I was even pleasantly surprised to buy a few things at Dollar General, where the grocery bags are usually yellow, and this month they're in a pretty shade of ghoul green and not pink!
It makes me wonder if people are finally getting the message? Maybe some? Last year I kindly questioned people when I felt their efforts at supporting breast cancer "awareness" were not effective, and I also wrote to the local newspaper editor on the matter and the letter was printed in their Sunday paper.
I think maybe the presidential election is taking center stage this year, so the focus is not so much on the pink crap. Shepkitty, love your memes and may be using a few of them on FB

I've just returned from my surgical oncologist's office, where they identified a 5 mm tumor in my "healthy" breast.
I'm not normally bothered by pink. Last spring I waited until grades were submitted, following my April diagnosis, and then disclosed my breast cancer to pretty much anyone who knows me. The more awareness, the better. The more support, the better. I've always found my former (survivor) bosses' reaction to Pinktober (extreme hate) way over the top.
But today I found the hot pink hand-towels I encountered in every bathroom at my doctor's office and the radiology suite, and the pink bubble heat/cold-pack that I was handed to celebrate Pinktober at the end of the first (of 3 procedures today) a bit nauseating. Really? Sitting in a breast center, on the path to what may be a second bout with breast cancer about 6 months after the first diagnosis, I have to be made aware of breast cancer every time I shift my gaze in any direction?
(Of course the attitude of the ultrasound tech, which screamed, "you're just another nervous nelly," didn't help my own temperament any. That changed when she came to get me for the second mammogram, and then for an ultrasound. I'm glad she will not be around when I go in for the ultrasound guided core biopsy in a bit over a week.)

Traveltext, I'm not even sure where to start with the pig calendar. It's at the very least least dismissive and disrespectful.
Toad, hugs to you. I'm sorry that the tech didn't even attempt to put herself in your shoes. Best wishes for a benign result, but sorry you have to go through this at all. (I had one last summer that was benign but it was quite a roller coaster, and not in a fun way!)

How "Pink Ribbon Culture" Harms Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors HERE

I don't have it in front of me, but ran across an email about Susan G. Komen supporting seven young researchers focused on metastatic and triple negative breast cancer. Maybe they are starting to get the message.
I was disappointed to see Sheryl Crow on "The View" saying that with early detection, breast cancer is 100% survivable at five years. I hope I'm not misquoting her. Given that triple negative is an interval cancer that can pop up between regularly scheduled mammograms, I think that's misleading.

Great article Traveltext! I'm going to share this on my FB feed. I too think things are toned down this year, even the NFL doesn't seem to have as much Pink on.
VLH-I've heard so many saying this early detection thing. Early detection....what does that mean. My first mammo at age 39 and I was dx'd at stage 3, how's that for early detection? I know I'm probably not typical, but I think early detection needs to be re-worded.
