An invaluable resource for addressing pink washing of products is Breast Cancer Action's Think Before You Pink campaign - http://thinkbeforeyoupink.org

And do remember October 13, Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day!

    Worth noting, if not celebrating:

I always wonder who will open the season here. Regretful statement, but true. It's the season.Travel text you have done it this year. Your PinktoberSucks.com/ is awesome. What can't be said here can be said there.

TT, there was a statement on one page crediting me with my screen name. Can't remember if I asked you to take that off. It was extremely kind of you, but leads back here. I don't have clear anonymity here which is fine, I like the wee bit I have. Your intention was very valued. VERY.

You are our outside leader TT. Thanks.

There was something I wanted to have you search, memory just really sucks right now. But I will maybe drop it in, if it passes my way again. Too often thoughts return when in the twilight of sleep and most relaxed with no friggen computer close.

TT bless you for your activism.

New to the thread see the topic box , please. There are two threads that are companion threads totally revised last year.

Imkop2 if you need help navigating threads, I'm available. I have a list of threads I put together for newbies. I can PM them. Where are you in process of the algorithm of BC. Helps to know what threads to send.

LTS great video.......I have tried for several years to get folks to eval organizations according to the BCA Think before you pink questions. It basically was unsuccessful. Please, look at the companion links in topic box. I will have to too. When I received permission from BCA to use their questions here, I did a couple /three. and a few others were done. BCA thought it a great idea. But it is a lot of work. Fun, but it is work. I'm weird research is fun, so take it with a grain of cayenne. You are new here, I think(memory). Your input is valued. I revised, I think I abdoned the old and started fresh. Follow the links, as shall I.

LTS I just reviewed my revision it does identify what I was important at the time. I'll await your response. But maybe it's just better to add the links to the topic box.

    Hi Sas,

You are welcome to integrate the links I sent into the topic box.

I don't have the energy or focus to click and review your links.

Nor can I remember 25+ years of observing the rise of pink ribbon culture.

May its natural demise be led by more nuanced conversations about breast cancer.

Pink washing of products to support awareness just doesn't cut it.

    best, Stephanie

You did catch this one from Snopes, right?

Rumor: The Susan G. Komen breast cancer organization only gives 20% of their donations to cancer research and pays their CEO $684,000 per year.

    Mixture of truth and lies

I've already started begging my Facebook friends to not buy into the pink washing. They will probably be sick of me by the end of October.

    Thanks, an interesting video Stephanie.

I see Komen have a new campaign to cut bc deaths by half in the next decade:

Here's Charity Navigator's tips for donating to bc charities.

Will someone just bottom-line it for me, please? To whom should I suggest friends donate if they agree with me that it is better to support research, not pink ribbon awareness? I will follow up any suggestions with my own research, but just give me a head start, please.

    Nice web site, Traveltext.

Thanks Shetland. I'm hoping some others chime in here on this question because it's an important question as to where it's best to donate. And which are the best charities for each state/country.

Charity Navigator rate bc charities HERE

Time magazine has a good article HERE

This charity HERE actually assists patients directly.

Basically, the aim is to ensure donations are not gobbled up in admin and marketing costs, and that as much money as possible gets to research not just "awareness" raising. One bc charity I looked at in Australia has costs of 38% of their income. This is way too high.

Others think, and I agree, that research on Stage IV of this disease is woefully low and this needs to be supported.

I'll summarise the posts into some sort of guide if we get a good response. Still a couple of weeks until the pink season!

    Good morning, ShetlandPony,

Two wonderful organizations that make certain all donations go directly to their programs:

focusing on metastatic breast cancer research

    http://www.metavivor.org

    information, empowerment and advocacy

    http://mbcn.org

I'd love to learn what your research turns up about these or other organizations.

    warmest healing wishes, Stephanie

    Okay, on a mission

I have lots of phone numbers and have talked to many folks over time. Initially it was sharing of info b/c it is important to have a contact in case someone goes MIA. But it allowed me to call and vis versa

What's more important is to think about talking to each other. Not just in troubled times, BUT just for fun.

It can be sooooooooomuch fun. Hours of fun. Some want to keep anonymity. Okay, get that. But we loose enough contact with the real world b/c we can't talk our real stuff.

Outside folks so interject platitudes that we know are false.

Take a chance PM someone that you fell a special affinity for, and have a chat.

Anyone know where I can get a More for Stage iV tshirt?

I have to go hand out water to women doing the Komen 3 day and I won't wear pink so I need something because I really hate all the pink crap, etc.

Traveltext ~ MBCN.org is not currently selling shirts. The Booster campaign has closed. It's a shame the shirts aren't always available. Finding T-shirts with real information and promoting legitimate research sites is difficult. BCO offers merchandise with the cringe worthy slogan "taking care of your girls" with two big flowers representing breasts. We need some creative and clever folks to come up some better designs.

Hmmm, sorry shepkitty. Plan B could be to order from a design your own t-shirt website. I've just ordered this one for Pinktober activism.

Here's the bcmets.org Stage IV t-shirt all cut up and modeled on my breast-free body...sorry, I can't do a selfie on the back.

The color is more accurate in the second photo - a glaring hot pink a black cotton shirt.

I think it's possible to design and print individual t-shirts. There was a booth at the local fair. :)

I support a wonderful non profit where I live (oddly same city as Komen) called the Bridge Breast Network. They help low-income and women without insurance get treatment and have doctors and facilities who work for a fraction of actual cost.

I realized after my surgery and diagnosis earlier this year how fortunate I was to have good insurance and medical options that many many women do not and have tried to steer friends and family to donate to them not the Pink Machine.

When I have seen smart women I know participate in walks wearing tshirts that say "save the Tata's" I want to scream.

Traveltext ~ Nice! Where did you find your shirt?

Stephanie ~ Your shirt is perfect..... eye-catching with a clear message, and easy to read website for further information . Does bcmets still offer that shirt? I did not see it on their site.

Balthus ~ Love to see an organization that donates directly to those in need!

Teespring.com sells shirts to benefit specifically designated charities. They also offer services to design and sell shirts for fundraising. I have bought from them before and have been pleased with their quality. A shirt will be up for sale for a limited amount of time but is often repeated if enough requests are made.

Wish I had seen this one sooner; this is the last day it is available.

    Hi Shepkitty,

Gosh, I probably got that t-shirt 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure the woman who produced them died and so, no access to her original run.

I doubt the design is proprietary though.

Getting t-shirts printed seems pretty easy these days.

    Good luck.

    Best, Stephanie

Balthus, that's the perfect bc charity:

"For every dollar donated, BBN clients receive nearly 10 times that amount in medical care. Hundreds of physicians and medical facilities volunteer their services or drastically reduce their fees to make such a large discount possible."

Shepkitty. I made and ordered my shirt here: https://www.spreadshirt.com/

Ugh, I just got my first "buy these pink things on sale for breast cancer awareness" email this am. I politely emailed asking if they would be contributing a portion of the proceeds towards a cure, and if so, to which organization. I'm not holding my breath but plan on making more than a few of these phone calls and emails this month and next. I really think it's disrespectful to use it as a reason for a sale but not actually contribute anything meaningful $-wise.

Just found this as on Twitter. I guess we really are close to Pinktober.

Crass sales promotion IMO. No mention on their website about whether anything at all goes to a bc charity.

Yes, the company is Calexotics and it appears they are just trying to cash in on the pink month without contributing anything at all. Companies do this every year.

I HATE pinktober. Not only cuz I hate pink but this does nothing to help us. There is no cure for cancer. I highly doubt there ever will be one. IMO, there may be a way to detect it before it's too late on tap but that's it. We have more research $s than any other cancer type, and a lot going on in the bc field. We don't need awareness. We aren't aware? Practically everyone knows someone who's had it or had it her/himself.

There are 2 websites on fb that absolutely piss me off. One gives out mis-information in addition to being silly. Bald caps. Because cancer causes baldness. Wrong! Chemo does, and not all chemo- some. Not everyone one loses their hair. This type of stuff is what creates the myths about cancer out there. And who's to say these funds aren't being pocketed? I don't believe any of these unless there is proof given that the $ made went for cancer stuff. Here's this website with a page that is on fb where my comments as ess enn are stated.

    http://beboldbebald.org

Next is this which made me puke and laugh at the same time. Let's take over Halloween now. My favourite holiday and fall colours. I sure don't want to see pink nor be reminded of cancer on my favourite holidays!

    http://thestir.cafemom.com/healthy_living/145063/p...

What I suggested is folks take this money and use it in their communities to help individuals. Many people don't have help or adequate help for things like cooking, cleaning and such. Something like this would be huge to form local oraganisations using funds raised for the pts. That would be nice, otherwise it's just another month..

what concerns me is the poor people who don't have the funds to cover co-pays or insurance to get mammograms or proper treatment. I am so thankful I have great insurance - my BMX cost $149,000!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thankfully I only had to pay $1,000 and I had the money but what if you didn't? I am going to research and will donate money to help those people NOT give money to some corporation that raises awareness !!
