Italychick, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm a newbie, but I still feel your pain. There's no greater loss than the loss of your mom. I miss mine every day.

Dara...so sorry you are having all the issues but....think in the whole world of chemo they happen fairly regularly.  Taste was an issue for me almost the whole time, also dealt with neuropathy of the tongue, jaw and then later esophagus- though apparently those issues are fairly rare.

Will say that my "go to" nutritional supplement was Shakeology shakes with unsweetened almond milk....had one every morning of every day throughout chemo and rads.  I really think that was very helpful in terms of nutrition as there were many days that was all I could tolerate along with soda water, herbal teas and saltines.  Hope you are able to find what works for you.  Know am sending healing mercies your way.

Theresa, so sorry for the loss of your mom. May her memory be for a blessing.

Poodles, it's so frustrating "when diets collide," and the only permissible foods left are ones you hate. I would be wary of salt substitutes that are actually supposed to taste somewhat salty, as they are basically potassium chloride (a no-no for your mom as well). When Bob was dealing with his perforated bowel and the eventual surgery, he was supposed to avoid anything that could possibly irritate it (no acids or spices) as well as anything with more than a gram of fiber per serving. He would actually “cheat" by eating green beans! (He missed his raw fruits and veggies more than an Atkins dieter misses potato chips and ice cream). My mom was plagued with kidney stones for about 10 years in her middle age. The first ones were uric acid, so she had to avoid anything with purines (just as with gout, she had to follow a low-protein, low-“umami" diet). Then she got hit with calcium oxalate stones, so there went the dairy, green leafy veggies, and tea. She groused that all she was allowed was (crustless white) bread and water. By her third bout, she was relieved to hear that she could relax her diet and let the meds & lithotripsy do their thing.

Hi all. Catching up quickly before I retire for the night. Sending congrats to those who have hit milestones and finised up chemo, lost ports and drains! Yippee!! Hugs to those struggling with their treatments, waiting for results, and the aggravation of Doc's that don't listen. So sorry for sick moms and losses. (I too am dealing with an elderly sick mom. It's so hard to watch.). 4 rads down, 29 to go. No SEs yet. Just tiring trips back and forth. I can't really complain as my rads are only 15 mins away. Just one more thing o add to an already overflowing plate. But I have it much better than some! Hope the rest of the week goes well for all. 💜

Beebazboob, Maybe those daily trips to rads added to an already crazy schedule contribute to radiation fatigue? Glad you're doing well.

Italychick, so very very sorry for the loss of your mom. We never really get over being the child when our moms are involved. Poodles, hope you all can find something your mom is willing to eat. It really is the long term consistency that is hard.

Trish, I love your new profile pic! It's darling.

Beebazboob, I'm not sure if the busy schedule helps or hurts, but I know fatigue is the hardest.

Sandy, are you still going in for surgery, either on your thumb or eye? Hope all goes smootlhy.

How's the unpacking going Peggy? I'm trying to clean out some space to do some fun art projects, but find I need to do most things in the morning. Afternoons I begin to fade and resort to cooking or DIY shows!

HH, I can't imagine having neuropathy of the tongue on top of mouth sores! The things we are able to overcome! You're all my heroes and my saviors with the tips and help. <3

Trish, I love your new picture, too!

Dara, unpacking is going well! Only boxes left are DH's steins and mugs that he collected over decades. Not sure which ones I'll display though I actually have plenty of space for them (plant shelves that are high up - who would put real plants 8 or 9 feet up and then have to water them?). I unpacked the last of the pictures, artwork last week and have even hung a few things. It's starting to come together. It's HOME now!! Thanks for asking.

    HUGS!

OMG, what kind of doctor is that you saw. Especially treating someone with cancer? Don't even look at you when she talk. People like that don't deserve to be in the medical profession.

My first cataract surgery is still scheduled for 9/7; If all goes well with the right eye, then we'll do the left one in early Oct. As for the thumb, the ortho insists on waiting till my followup 8/24--probably do at least another ultrasound to see if any of the tendon-sheath swelling has gone down or if the nodule has shrunk--before he decides whether to re-inject or schedule the tendon release surgery. And today my hemorrhoids started acting up again (no pain, just bleeding--had an otherwise clean colonoscopy in Dec. 2011), so my primary will probably want me to get them checked out and perhaps tied off. Oh, joy.

ChiSandy, We are just about the same age (66). Isn't it fun? I am greatful for each and every day but somebody is having fun throwing challenges at me this year. Just had three polyps removed, have upper and lower varices now, kidney stone, swelling in hand of bc side so physical therapy and pancytopenia so getting iron infusions. Told doctor that cataracts will have to wait for another time. Glad I'm retired so I have time for all these doctor appointments! I was always the healthy one....WHAT HAPPENED? Age, weight, or a virus was the standard answer until bc. Now they check everything and keep finding more crap. Better than the alternative so I just keep on keeping on. Oh joy is right 😏 J

    Hi All!

I've been reading silently along the last few days.

Italy so so sorry about your mom! It's so hard to lose someone you love and what she and you went through sounds so difficult.

Poodles I was finally able to get my mom and her doc to medicate for her depression and it improved her quality of like hugely in her last year. At one point she said "those happy pills you have me on are working!" Much better than "Just because you went to college does not mean you know everything!" Lol. Brain chemistry as we age changes as well as all the stress /change/illness etc. Hopefully her Drs are aware and will treat. Hugs and best of luck during this tough time!

ChiSandy hope things start going more smoothly for you!

Best of luck for all those doing active treatment.

Finished rads about 2 months ago arm very sore since golf trip. No nodes involved but still some armpit in line of fire. Hoping it settles down soon. Anyone have experience with this

Sandy, you just can't buy a break! Good luck!

Jo, Sounds like you and Sandy have cornered all the ailments - isn't that fun?

PlanB, hope the soreness goes away. You had no nodes removed? If so, I don't have any helpful thoughts. Just feel better.

    HUGS!!

Pretty sure it’s not polyps--I had none in 2011, nor any diverticular disease, and was told I needn’t come back for a repeat ‘scope till 2021. (Of course, this was by the same GI endoscopy clinic--and the same doctor--who perforated Bob’s colon last spring, sooooo......). I’ve known I’ve had ‘rhoids since my early 30s. (They run in the family--my mom had them and Gordy had an episode when he was 17). They have bled sporadically (sometimes 2 or 3 times a year, sometimes every 2 or 3 years) since 2008. The “rubber band surgery” for them gives me the willies....as does having to go through that stupid colo-prep again before 2021. I do have a friend who thought she had merely hemorrhoids but turned out to have had anal mucosal melanoma (she calls it “booty cancer”)--she had a hellish year but is in remission. But she’d never had a hemorrhoid diagnosis before, whereas I have.

Hi all - Just put my 94 year old mom and my sister on a plane back to Fresno and now trying to catch up after almost 2 weeks! Such a blessing mom could make the trip, and she certainly enjoyed escaping the valley heat

Italychick - So sorry for the loss of your mother. Hugs and prayers to you and your family.

Poodles - Sounds like it has been a tough road for both you and your mom. Hoping you find some diet solutions that work for her soon.

Alice and Sloan - let me know your route for the September road trip. If you are coming up I-5 prior to heading to Eastern WA I will meet you. If you need a place to stay near Seattle, I have room :-)

Dara - hoping you are feeling a little better by now...

Molly - is that last drain out? Hoping you are turning the corner!!

Hi Katzpjs, yes last drain out and cleared by both surgeons to return to work next week. I so wish I could go on the road trip with you ladies. I am jealous you will be meeting Peggy.

And I'm so ecstatic I will be meeting Alice and Sloan! Life is awfully good right now and I feel very blessed.

Katzpjays, I'm so glad you had a great visit with your mom and sister. Lucky you! Wish you could come east too. Maybe next year I'll travel some and get over to visit you.

Sandy, that's scary about your friend. So glad she is doing well. I don't blame you for not wanting to do that awful cleanse for colo. It is terrible.

katzpjays - that is hilarious home improvement project! We'll try to get together with you on our trip!

Peggy - when is a good time for us to see you? We're thinking last week of Sept and early October when all the kids and college kids are back to school and it starts too cool off.

Molly - What would be good for you (timewise) to go on this trip?

Octogirl - are you up for a road trip?

I started playing golf again (since my surgery 14 months ago). I'm playing 3 times a week, and my surgery side is doing great with no lymphedema flares. I also started doing yoga a couple times a week now, and I love it. I even got my husband to come with me. The down side is that I'm noticing my weight go up. I don't know if it's the AI's or the mega-menopause. Maybe I'll be able to control it better now that I'm walking and playing golf again. It's a little stressful.

Sloan, any time is good. The only thing I have scheduled until Thanksgiving is my dexascan Sept 22. Just come!!! I can't wait and I think it is wonderful that you are willing to trek up here. I appreciate it more than you can know.

Sloan - I've started to play golf too. OK, maybe it's a stretch to call what I do golf. Still, we belong to a club, I have some cute clothes and I drink wine. In my mind, that qualifies.

That weight thing...I have put on ~ 5 pounds and I am working out 4X a week, walking 10K steps most days and eating pretty well (with a few slips, like an occasional ice cream). Not sure what gives, but I'm sticking with my routine for now with a little more attention to what I eat

  • pontiacpeggy
    pontiacpeggy Member Posts: 6,339

I've been lucky and haven't gained weight with my anastrozole. I'm walking more (because my dog needs more exercise) and I eat decently. And no one wants to see me play golf (it's been 30 years). I stink. I'd sit in the clubhouse with Katz and have wine. :)

    HUGS!

    Sloan, this one’s for you:

Doctor: “We’ll do your surgery, and you’ll be good as new." Patient: “Will I be able to play golf?” Doctor: “I don’t see why not.” Patient: “Wow, gee thanks, Doc--never tried it before!” (Spoken as someone who has occasionally only committed attempted golf).

Katz, that’s too funny! And how I wish it were in the budget (and my schedule) to fly or drive out to Bellevue for the FAR-West folk music conference--could have joined the convoy east to see Peggy & Traci in Spokane! But I have to at least get both cataracts done (and maybe trigger thumb surgery), go to Iowa City for the FARM folk conference and then a very heavy rehearsal schedule for the Chicago Bar Assn. show. (Not going to audition for a solo this year--I’m 65, this is my 14th year in the show, and have had my "moment in the sun”--so long as I get to do some harmonizing and say a few lines--and get a third-floor dressing room--I’m a happy camper). We may go to NYC for a few days after that (use up some expiring Hilton points) before flying to Amsterdam & Barcelona.
