I'm DONE! parboiled, roasted and ready to go! I didn't get to ring a bell, got a hug though...

Good for you Ann! The bell at my hospital is on the Chemo floor, so maybe it's a chemo not a radiation thing? A hug works too though!!

Judy, that's wonderful! No bell for me. Some centers DO have bells for rads. I cried after my last one because the staff had been so kind and supportive and not just for my treatment.

    HUGS!

JShannon, glad your surgery is over. Hope you get your path report back quickly & it is good results.

Judy, good feeling to be done. Yay! I got a signed card from all of the staff. Also found it very emotional, had to choke back tears.

Time to celebrate clean margins!!! Thanks so much to everyone here for their support! Just take it one day at a time and get the answers to all your questions. Getting ready for radiation and hormone therapy, maybe a medical trial too

    Hi Ladies,

I had a lumpectomy (July) and re-excision (August) in my right breast , and the surgeon was unable to get clean margins. The case went to a tumour board, and they decided that since I had 2/6 positive nodes, they didn't want to delay chemo. They advised that I start chemo, and then afterwards have extra boosts done to the tumour bed when I was getting radiation.

I did start chemo in October, and it's going fine. But when I recently had a preliminary meeting with my radiation oncologist, he clearly felt that the surgeon should have gone back for another re-excision. He's going ahead with the plan to give me extra radiation to "mop up" the area (his words), but it left me feeling unsettled.

Has anyone else had a situation like this? All comments / suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks,

    Barb

My BS had to go back in 3 times to get clean margins, but they were able to check the path right there so it was all done with one surgery day. Just took a much longer time than expected.

That sounds like the way it should be done! Much more efficient, and you leave knowing that the darned cancer is out.

In my case, I was already starting to heal from my first surgery when I found out they had to go back in. What's done is done ... I know it's not good, I'm just left wondering how bad it really is, and whether this kind of thing happens to other people.

What's the point in having a lumpectomy (vs mastectomy) if some cancer is left behind? Should I be considering the possibility of mastectomy down the road?

Thanks for sharing your experience, Dara.

Dear ILSunrise: Thanks for informing us about the trials for gene mutations. I was dx with a VUS so I don't know what I am dealing with. I will look into the study/trials.

Dear TBalding: I feel the tightness and soreness too when I raise my arm. I do stretches when I think about it. I'm sure that I should be more regimented and stretch more.

Dear Elizabeth: Your post was hilarious. You see the bright side of things. Good for you.

Dear Abacadabra: Good luck. I cannot comment on your post but I can send you hugs which hopefully, will lessen your stress levels.

    Dear Ann: Congratulations

Dear Poodles: I'm glad that your hair is gorgeous now and that you love your curls.

Dear Dara: Your picture is beautiful.

FWIW: I do not have any side effects from Anastrazole and I have been taking it for 2 years. Hopefully, those of you who are worried about SE's will not have any SE's from tamixifen or AI's. I am wishing the same thing for those of you who will be starting rads. I cannot comment on chemo because I did not have chemo.

Good luck and hugs to everyone else too. I have not gone back and read all of your posts so I need time to "get to know" all of you.

I just raced (today) in my breast cancer survivor division of dragon boat racing. We came in 2nd. There was a really touching ceremony for all of us breast cancer survivors after the races. Other teams, who are not survivors, race too I found out about dragon boat paddling from my breast cancer support group. I am so glad that I am a part of this wonderful team.

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

Shannon...glad all went well & pray it will continue.

Judy... Yay...can't wait to move on to the next step. My cancer center didn't have a bell to ring after my last chemo so I gather there will be no bell ringing after radiation.

Lorri...thanks for the info. No swelling so that's good.

    ArtyMom....wonderful news!

Barb... So sorry I have no words of advise but I think you need some clear answers. Hugs!

    614...dragon boat racing..sounds fun.

Thanks Katz and Cali, it is starting to look better already.. I've been sloshing on the aloe and it's helped a lot.. looking forward to nothing next week... Prayers for all those still going through it and just starting... it isn't as bad as we first think it is and I can get my imagination going real good.. so it surprised me how well and how fast it went once I started

Judy, can only imagine how great it is to have a completely open week! After going daily it must seem like such a freedom!

614, so nice that you popped back in. We always wonder how people are whom we keep track of almost daily and hope life is progressing smoothly.

My sister came yesterday from San Francisco, and we had the nicest time going to see the Festival of Lights at the Mission Inn in Riverside. It's a pretty spectacular display. Today going to do a little Christmas shopping. Thought you'd like to see just a taste of the lights.

    Dara, what great photos!

Judy, congrats on being done with rads! My skin continued to get worse for about 10 days, then started to heal.

Sherry (614), congrats on the Dragon boat race. I am impressed that you do that! I'd love to be on a team like that.

Barb, honestly I think I would demand another surgery before rads. Rads changes the tissue and makes further surgery more difficult. Plus, another surgery would let them know how well the chemo worked. Good luck, whatever decision you make!

Artymom, congrats on the clean margins! What trial are you thinking about participating in?

It's a sunny but cool day here in California's central valley. We sure need more rain but I do enjoy the sunny days this time of year.

CJSharma and I are signed up for the 21 mile walk at Big Sur on April 30. Anyone else interested?

614 and Caligirl55 - Thanks for the hugs and for listening to my woes!

Moondust - You make excellent points about the merits of doing another re-excision prior to radiation. I will see my MO next week and will bring this up with her. Thank you!

Had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago. I keep having some the feeling of chills just around the area where the lump was and under my arm. I don't have any swelling or fever just a periodic chill running down my side. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Miko
    Miko Member Posts: 198

had my lumpy on Nov 17 and node removal. I have slight pain under my arm and right behind my nipple where the bc was. I also developed an infection which made the area warm and swollen ( in fact i still have a little swelling) and a red streak across the breast. But better now and going back to work tomorrow. Also started exercising. Trying to get ready for the next step - rads
