Hi Lucy - I was told no less than two weeks and not to let them out until they show the signs of adjustment I mentioned in my post.  I can do this until mid November when I have my next surgery.  That will be 2 months.  I'm surrounded by farmland so they could wander to someone's barn.  I want them to be happy here.  Thanks for your suggestions.  You have a lot more experience with this than I do.

For those of you looking for training advice:  www.dogstardaily.com  or my favorite: http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendofthe...

Here is an article I wrote on Jumping for a dog magazine.  Currently, I"m at the John Rogerson Seminar on Canine Aggression and something that really hit home was us(humans) need to put the emotions back into dog training with our facial experesions and our ability to play with our dogs.

    First
    way:

    1.
Your dog jumps up, you leave the area, go into the nearest room or outside the
house and shut door. This is only for a second or two.

    2.
When you come out you approach your dog, you can ask for a sit or touch, if the
dog doesn't jump up you mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker”.and REWARD, with a
    “Treat/Toy/ Pet/Verbal Praise”

    3.
If the dog jumps up you repeat the leaving of the area.

    Second
    way:

    1.
The Dog jumps up, STAND LIKE A TREE ARMS CROSSED and SAY “OFF”.

    2.
All four paws are on the floor then you can pet him or her. KNEEL
    Down to the dog’s level.

    3.
Ask for a sit, mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker”.and REWARD, with a “Treat/Toy/
    Pet/Verbal Praise”

    Third
    way:

    1.
The Dog jumps up, YOU LEAN INTO YOUR DOG’S SPACE SAY “OFF”. (Some dogs may not like you in their inner
space. Do not do this with strange dogs)

    2.
All four paws are on the floor then you can pet him. KNEEL Down to
    your dog level.

    3.
Ask for a sit, mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker”.and REWARD, with a Treat/Toy/
    Pet/Verbal Praise”

    Fourth
    way:

    1.
You come home from work or you walk into the house your dog jumps up Turn your
back and start talking aloud or walk over to a window and describe what you are
    looking at.

    2.
All four paws are on the floor then you can pet your dog. KNEEL Down
    to his or her level.

    3.
Ask for a sit, mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker”.and REWARD, with a “Treat/Toy/
    Pet/Verbal Praise”

    Sixth way:

    1.
You are letting your dog inside the house from being outside, as soon as the
dog sees your hand on the door handle it starts to jump up. You take your hand off the door handle and
when the dog is calm you put the hand back on the door handle. You play this
game until the dog is calm when you touch the door handle.

    2.
When you start to open the door, if the dog is jumping you then close the door.
You slowly open the door if the dog gets too excited you can close the door.
Once the dog is calm you can open the door to let the dog in. Mark with “Good
    Girl/Boy/Clicker”.

    Seventh way: Premack
    Principle

    • 1.You teach your dog to jump up. You do this by getting the dog-excited
maybe dancing around or tossing a toy.
When the dog jumps up you mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker” and REWARD, with
      petting only.
    • 2.You immediately then ask for a sit, mark “Good Girl/Boy/Clicker”. And
REWARD, with a “Treat/Toy” and then ask for the Hug or Jump up again.
    • 3.Eventually you will fade the treat/toy reward and your dog will sit for
      a hug/jump up.

Thanks FDM, very useful and practical tips. I can't do that whole "ignore your dogs when you get home to keep them from jumping" thing that other trainers have recommended- because I am equally excited to see them! These approaches seem like they will work.

Happy Sunday to all. I am recovereing from my fifth, and I hope final surgery, with a lot of canine help!

    Hugs

Good to hear science! You shouldn't ignore those furbabies, they know in their own way that you are hurting and not feeling well.

Yep they are indeed a big help during recovery, I  love them all so much (three pups now). It is nice to spend my recovery week at home with them, they are getting even more attention than usual!

Thank you for the healing thoughts! I took a week off of work and then had an insane four days, slaugtered with deadlines and meetings. Looking back, it would have been best to arrange two weeks off rather than one, after surgeries on both sides of me (nipple graft and lift).

LOL- hindsight is 20/20. Anyway I am back at home with the pups today for a long weekend. Whew!

I hope everyone is doing great. Any more pictures?

    Hugs

Footprints sending prayers to you and your furbaby.

My wonderful dog Jackson kept my feet warm this morning as I pondered whether to get up a little later or not. Little bugger threw his paw over my legs and wouldn't let me move!

Hi everyone.  I am new to this thread and found it so interesting.  I plan on reading many many more posts.  I am a huge animal lover.  We have two senior Golden Retrievers, both rescues.  Murphy and Sampson are both about ten now.  They bring me more comfort and joy, I know everyone here understands that.  I also have three shelter kitties.  Bella is a tabby and about 10.  We adopted her ten years ago this month.  I think she was about 4 months old when we got her.  Since we do not go to the shelter the last two cats we really were blind sighted.  We went to Petco one day to buy our dog food, and the city shelter had set up a little adoption center for the day.  We had no idea, and came home with dog food and two kittens.  'Poppy' is a long haired dilute calico and she was young at probably 2 months.  'Pistol' earned his name by escaping from the box they sent him home in multiple times before we ever got home.  He is a solid black boy,  All boy and such a brat, but a face smoosher and a Mama's boy to the extreme.  He is still all cat, but so funny and he gets what I call a 'Mommy moment' and I might as well forget doing anything until I let him lie across my shoulders.  Then he smooshes my face, purring loudly as we walk around the house or the back yard and he smells things from my shoulder height!   Poppy is the only one who isn't friendly at all.  She is a strange little cat.  Adopted as a kitten, raised in the same home but she has always been aloof and largely unfriendly.  She has rare moments that she enjoys being petted, but on her terms only.  She hates being picked up or held.  She pretty much lives in her own world.  The other two cats are so dog like.  If we are out back gardening, watering, simply sitting outside, both dogs are of course there but so are Bella and Pistol.  They are everywhere we are.

I look forward to getting to know everyone here, and your beloved fur friends.  Hugs to all.............

Welcome justmejanis! Your kitties and pups sound wonderful. We have a dilute calico at our house in town. She was a semi feral kitten, and is semi feral adult. Huh. We have another batch of three feral cats from Oklahoma Humane in the cabitat in the barn. This time I am confining them for six weeks. They are not really feral, obviously litter mates or relatives. They are within three days of euthanasia when Ok Humane pulls them for the barn kittie program. One is a black and white "brat" like Pistol. He is a funny guy. Very vocal. He spits and purrs at nearly the same time.

Foots - sending up prayers for Faith's uneventful surgery and complete healing. Speaking of healing Science and glennie I hope you are both healing perfectly. MOmmy glad Jackson is keeping your tootsies warm. Our Millie beagle is like a hot water bottle when she sleeps next to me at night. I'm not sure what makes me hotter her, or the hot flashes!

Take care ladies. Have a great day!

Hi all.........I have been away for a bit struggling with our little Bentley.  He started going downhill quickly last Monday and by Wednesday we knew he would be leaving us.  Our boy would have been 15 on December 23, such a blessing.  I feel like we did right by him.  He did not like the car and only wanted to be home so on Thursday morning at 9am we carried him outside on his blanket and all snuggled in the backyard until about 12:30pm.  We could not have asked for better Fall weather in NH; bright sunshine, the birds were singing like crazy and all the leaves on the ground.  Our Vet came over and our little boy passed around 1:00pm.  We are all so very sad and trying to focus on Bella as well so she does not become depressed.  Our family is shrinking every year; from three goldens to our one golden girl Bella now.

    JustmeJanis,

Senior pups are the best; so loving and they want attention.  Senior Goldens of course steal my heart because we are a golden family as well and have had five goldens.  We have been through so much with our goldens from different cancers to vestibular disease, etc - if you ever have anything come up and just need to bounce it off a fellow golden lover, feel free to IM me or post; I try to get out here as often as I can.

A lifesaver for us has been the Lift 'n Go harness to help them get up.  You probably do not need one at age 10 - here is a photo of Bentley wearing one so you have an idea.

Dogs I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Bentley.  I know the heartache you are going through only too well.  These dogs are so special.  I lost my first Golden to a very aggressive cancer.  He had just turned five.  Sending big healing hugs to you and your crew.  Thanks for the picture of the harness, how interesting.  So far mine are good but down the road you never know.

farmerlucy thanks so much for the warm welcome!  Those dilutes are funny creatures aren't they?  Poppy is hardly feral but she acts like it at times.  Very antisocial.  Your 'Pistol' sure sounds fun, like mine!

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

My little Holly girl really liked my bald head.  She would inch her way up my side, until finally I had a Holly hat.  What a lovey.

I'm so sorry about Bentley.  Why don't dogs live longer?

Dogsneverlie- I'm so sorry about Bentley. You were lucky to have him for 15 years. Ours died from cancer 08 at age 12- not a dry eye in the house. Too hard to lose a fur baby.

Hugs and love from my crew 3 cats and 3 dogs, one canary and a pond full of fish.

Hugs for Bella from me and my furbabies.

The cat has been acting a bit funny. All summer long he wouldn't sleep on his cat pillow I made for him when he was a kitten, but since I changed to the winter curtains, he's right back on his pillow and either snoozing or looking outside.

That sounds like quite a surgery for Faith - I am sure all those tubes are really bothering her but I'm sure they are bothering you too; it's always hard for us to see our kids like that; I even get upset if one has to wear the "cone of shame"!  I am trying to catch up and I am sorry but I can't find why and what Faith had done on her neck - would you mind telling again?

Sending you both hugs for a speedy recovery.
