Artist, Happy for your news! I'm with Deanna, don't sweat the small stuff! What's it like in Tahoe this weekend?

Very true Deana thanks! My sister just invited me to visit her daughter in Barcelona. If I can figure out how to get a passport in time and finances all squared I may just go for it!

Barcelona is fabulous -- I highly recommend it. You can find a lot of free walking tours (just tip the guide). GO, have a blast, and buy tickets to the cathedral in advance.

Yes, Barcelona is lovely! I was there last May. If you decide to go, artistatheart, PM me and I'll give you tips!

Thank you for the responses to my question about post-shot soreness. Next question: Do any of you use emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) cream prior to the injection?

No I have not. Really didn't need it. Good luck!

    pajim Member Posts: 930

No. They offer a cold spray which I think is supposed to lessen the pain of the needle stick, but it doesn't do anything for me.

The needle is so long that I don't think lidocaine can help if you have painful shots. Wouldn't it only affect skin level?

    All,

That numbing spray may not do much for injection pain, but ever since my nurse started using it, I've noticed less itching and fewer hives in the injection area.

    Coincidence?

    Tina

P.S. I've had much less itching since she started using gauze and paper tape on the injection sites instead of band-aids, too. The things one discovers..!

Sheltland, even though it's a big needle, it's very sharp and honestly doesn't hurt if done correctly.

    artistatheart Member Posts: 1,437

Yes, the shot has had negligible pain when done correctly for me. Like Tina said I have had a little itchiness before, and a bruised feeling but no big deal at all. Thanks Pam and Tina for the tips, and Tina I will definitely PM you if I get this trip all squared away!

Deep breath. Ok. If I have to do this, I am not going to look at that needle. I will tell them I am nervous and to please let it be someone with lots of experience. I know I'm looking ahead, but preparing mentally for what might happen is how I deal with things. We'll see what transpires this month.

Shetland-I agree with the above comments. I agree that I wouldn't want to get bumped by a grocery cart, though. I really only feel tenderness when I lay on my back in bed for a few days afterward.

Linda-I don't have any sciatic problems. I do have leg pains but I am sure that it is from my chemo Kadcyla since that is one of the SE's.

    Motrin helps that though.

Good afternoon! Up for my second shot of my loading dose this afternoon. Shetland - I have only had 1 shot so far, but I made sure I took a long walk that night. It was sore at the injection sites for a couple of days but only when pressed on if that makes any sense. Like Denny said - when laying on my back or when leaning back in my office chair. No side effects that I can recall - I'm creaky in the joints, but I have been since I had my hysterectomy. Pretty tolerable so far! I didn't get numbing spray - the shot itself really didn't hurt. My nurse paused several times throughout - each injection was done slowly.

Oooh, Barcelona sounds fabulous! I just got back from a week in Riveria Maya, Mexico. Wonderful weather, wonderful family time. My son is a senior this year (in high school), so we went with two other families with kids in his class. Had a blast with the exception that the boys/girls were a bit wild since they were legal to drink in Mexico. LOL. Some very funny moments!

Hope everyone is doing well! Will pop back in soon!

Mustang, We stayed in Riveria Maya about 10 years ago with our kids! It was fabulous, very beautiful on the Caribbean side. I'll bet there were some funny moments!

So Shetland, I had my shots yesterday and I am rather sore this time, although I sat on my bottom at work all day which didn't help. Plus I got the younger nurse who is not very good at administering. The second one she sort of jabbed me fast which is NOT protocol at all. Yowza! The good nurse is out on maternity leave....

I've never even seen the needle tip for the Faslodex so never even thought about the sharpness of it!! I got my good nurse, Lovely, and the injections barely hurt. I will be sure to ask for her from now on! I asked for her the second time but she was off and then I forgot about her until I got her again last Monday! And I'm not sore at all today- Friday, so I think that's good.

Ouch, sorry it was like that, Artist. I think you will have to help train that nurse. Tell her what to do and not do. Cjanet, do they wisely hide the needle, or are you averting your eyes? Me, five years of regular blood tests etc. and I still cannot watch. I'll try and get insider information about who the good nurses are.

LOL. since I have been going to my chemo center for 14 years, I am good friends with most of the nurses. One of the nurses was gabbing away to me, waving the needle around.

Afterwards, I told her that I didn't need to see that needle, and we just laughed. She never thought about that.

Shetland, I am just hoping the one nurse comes back from maternity leave soon! I've had a sort of achy hip and leg ever since...As long as it's doing the job I guess I can't complain TOO much??

Had my shots this week and wanted to tell you that my nurse said to let y'all know that if you are on blood thinners you might end up with lumps and bumps - they've seen it in a couple of patients - I am on low dose aspirin and haven't had any problems except for a little soreness when lying on my back in bed.

  • artistatheart
    artistatheart Member Posts: 1,437

Sandy, I'm not on any blood thinners but definitely have two hard lumps from my last shots that are still sore. I get next shots in two weeks and am not looking forward to assaulting this area again. I did well at first but now am really experiencing some of the discomfort described by other woman here.

Artist, It has been my experience that sometimes I get no lumps or bruising and other times I do. Since I have scar tissue built up that also plays a role. Lately my nurse has been going a bit higher and that seems to help. Hope your next shots go well.

Thanks Linda, I am pretty sure it has to do at least something with the nurse who administered them. Twice now when she has been the one to inject and I have had more pain on injection, more blood from injection site and more after soreness. Plus this time I think she hit something as I had an ache going down my leg for a week. I think she needs to go higher next time too. Small complaints in the big picture, but avoiding pain or even discomfort is always desirable! I can't wait until the regular gal comes back from maternity leave.....

    hi girls.

Reading about faslodex. Saw onc yesterday and still no chemo b/c lungs peunomia but going to start faslodex either Friday or next week. Will add Ibrance after results of Pet/scan today. They think might be cancer in lung. If so will have biopsy of lung and go from there. My body is beat up from chemo so onc and I am comfortable doing faslodex in interim as we gather info. TM jumped 200 points since off tx b-c of pneumonia Hoping faslodex will help.

Hope the nurse giving me the shots knows what she is doing. Lol. SE? From faslodex. Hope this stuff works.

Sigh. What a ride this cancer is.

Hi Diana and welcome! I think/hope you will find Faslodex a breeze after all the chemo you have had, and Ibrance isn't too bad either. How is your WBC? Hope your PET/CT today has some good news for you. I think you're overdue for some!

Diana, I'm also loving Faslodex+Ibrance, and my local onc told me he has had women on Faslodex alone for 3 and 4 years. Hopefully, it will work great for you, too.

Good luck with your Petscan, and prayers for no lung met!

thanks for welcome. Need to hear faslodex is working for you all.

Pet/ct in 1 hour. Yikes. Tomorrow lung doc and most likely biopsy.

Faslodex starting next week. At least I'm back in Tx.

    Everyone take care 😎
