ALittleBit- we tend to be more active here in the spring, summer and fall, but are keeping this thread going any ways we can during the winter months here in the US.

It's been a while since I've been able to get out into my garden. Too much rain!

I decided to go back to some of my old garden pics and wanted to share this amazing century plant bloom from 2013. This was on my neighbors property to the south, and if you have never seen one of these, the bloom must be like 10 feet tall. After the century plant blooms, it dies, but when my neighbor pulled it out after it had done it's thing, she found little ones underneath. It left babies!

That is so cool!

Teka- my neighbor left them in place but I do have one from another friend I exchange cactus and other succulent cuttings with. Been getting it started, but not transplanted it yet.
Trying to figure out where I can have a big bloom like that in my little yard!

Split- that is so cute. Teka is going to really love that one!

Hi, all! I've been enjoying your pictures so much. This is blah time in Austin: no snow, no flowers, just cedar pollen for horrendous "cedar fever" allergies. Dear Son took some photos on the way home to Austin from Lubbock, TX, when a blizzard blew in, decimating cotton fields before his eyes. Starkbeauty, I think. ✌️❤️Linda

It was 61 degrees today here in Ohio. Overcast and a bit windy, but still, Dh and I took advantage of it and spent the whole afternoon giving a heavy pruning to one of our apple trees. We'll do the other apple tree next time we get a mild winter day and he has the day off. We pulled out the fire pit and burned some of the debris.
I did a small bit of weeding in one flower bed. Why is it the cold temps don't kill many of the weeds? Not fair!
It's always a nice break in the winter to get a mild day or two and get outside for some early yard work.0 -
How about this one my gardening friends?

Can you imagine how long that took to grow?

Perennial border in a state! But the birds are lovely anyone want to take a walk with me in my garden?
This is my first spring in my house. Lots of work to do (see above link) but some nice surprises also:

Jackiebird-yay for blooms! It is unusually warm here right now, with temps forecasted to go into the 70s today. I expect that our flowering fruit trees will be on schedule or even early with their blooms this year at the end of February. Will be sure to share as I walk around and take photos in the neighborhood.

Are those currently blooming, Jackbirdie? Foreign concept to me. It is 1 degree at my place as we speak, feels like -12. I am totally getting the fever as I look through my gardening magazine though.

I took a walk yesterday in the neighborhood and it was so spring like. The smell, the sounds, the feel of the air all made me feel like it was March or April vs. mid February. I was looking at the nearby fruit trees and they look like they are ready to do their thing. It is going to be warm and mild right through next weekend!
Twohobbies- I heard it is so bitterly cold in the midwest and northeast right now. Stay warm and know that spring is coming.

Messy pre-cleanup garden tour with very nice birdsong
Two Hobbies- yes, those are currently blooming. The photos were taken two days ago. I was drawn outside by a cacophony of birds in a big tree and then took a little tour of my garden. It smelled so sweet outside!
I took a short video of the not so pretty side of things. Will add a you tube link in an edit. It's a big mess out there, especially the large perennial border. It is quite moderate in coastal OR, so things will nowbe getting underway.
Two bco sisters who I haven't met yet in person said they might come for a visit and cautiously (everybody keeping in mind their LE) engage in a spring cleanup! Weeding included! The mere suggestion of it lifted my mood!
Brb with the link (above because I'm a technical moron and couldn't get it to stick down here- clic on the blue text above)
PS that IS a fabulous African violet

The African violet is so beautiful

Teka, My Mom used to start African violets from a leaf. I've tried, but only get rotten leaves. That violet is gorgeous.

Ah, a calming and happy sound, Jackbirdie. Love the birds singing and your chimes too. I've been tempted by the climate of Oregon a few times but I worry about sunshine?
Teka, such a pretty African Violet. They are also one of my favorites.

Jackbirdie, your video made my day!! Thank you so much. And your perrenial border - wish I were there to help and you could help me. I know what you are feeling, I think. I have a "live or die" perrenial garden, but they got nothing from me last year as I was finishing chemo. This year it really needs me, and I have tried to attack a small section each day, but it is taking every thing from me. I can garden OR plan meals, walk dog, etc. Today I overdid, so along with too much sun ( but we need vitamin D, right?) my Truncal Lymphodema flared up worse than it has ever been. Scary, and there went the rest of my day. I was crying and frustrated, threatening to move into an Austin concrete condo then saw your video. You reminded me of what I get fro this space - you will get there, bit by bit. Peaceful night to all, Lind

And there's always the option of hiring a gardener to help get things tidy. Give you a head start and then you can keep it up. Looks a lot like our garden at the moment.

Book Lady I can totally relate. My house had tons of flower beds planted by the previous owner- the only problem being they were not low maintenance and stuff was totally planted in the wrong spots. hydrangeas in hot sun, hostas in full sun along a sidewalk? etc. Two of the last four summers I've been recovering from surgery and on chemo and it's been so hard to work on these. I have my front and side beds done and pretty low maintenance but the back yard has two big corner beds and beds around the deck and they are a disaster! I'm hoping next summer I can get to them but I'm lucky to have time to maintain the front and side so not sure. The only tip I do have is get lots of mulch so there is less weeding.

Booklady- I am sorry about the LE and ways that it is keeping you from something you love. I hope you can do a bit of gardening this year. Maybe find a neighborhood kid that wants to make some extra money by keeping things cleaned out. Perhaps someone you can teach about gardening and someone who can help you with the work you cannot do? A win win for everyone.
The west is continuing to enjoy mild temps this weekend. I was out yesterday morning clearing out a lot of leaves from around some of the perennials in the front rock garden area. I know we still have more winter ahead of us, but my gopher plant that is ready to bloom is both clogged with leaves and being encroached by the neighbors rosemary bush. I keep cutting it back on the side next to my property, but see it needs some cutting again. I removed a lot of leaves, but not all because I know they are protecting the early shoots. There were a bunch of tumble weeds stuck in there too! Looks ALOT better. I need to do a bit of clean up in the backyard today, but my dumpster is also full! So I will keep it to a minimum.
I think I am ready for spring, how about you?
