Thanks, Celia. Yup—the conference is at Montreat, just outside of Black Mountain, about 45 min. e. of Asheville. It's a looong drive—I used to split it up somewhere in the Cincinnati area. (And for a few years, along the way there was a musicians' union gathering en route at the Highlander Center outside of Knoxville, so it was 2 days to Knoxville--or Sevierville--and then a fairly easy drive to the conference after the union gathering). Said gathering has been moved to the Catskills and wasn't held this year. I've found that road construction (especially around the KY/TN state line) and stormy weather make the drive much longer. I did the drive three years ago solo, meeting up there with my singing partner from WI who had gigs both going & coming so we had to travel separately; with two of us driving it was much more pleasant. Skipped the conference in 2015 when my husband had an emergency necessitating several hospital stays and then surgery; last year, I flew into Charlotte and rented a car, as I was doing a breast cancer charity benefit in Hickory after the concert (our own HappyHammer arranged it, and Mustlovepoodles came along—had a great time with them).
One thing I'm gonna miss is stopping for lunch at Jean Farris Winery south of Lexington. Great wines (all vinifera), charcuterie & cheese plates in the tasting room.

Just checking in with a slight bit of good CT news after chuckling over the recent posts! I saw my ortho doc yesterday, who had told me previously both knees are bone on bone (osteoarthritis and the letrozole doesn't help) and need to be replaced. Going to schedule one in fall and one in winter (seeing surgeon about scheduling in July)...but in the meantime ortho doc shot me full of steroids in each knee. and WOW! Already so much better! I can walk much better, step off a sidewalk without fear of falling (previously I had to hold on to someone or something if stepping down at all. Down is much worse than up.), and when I get up from a sitting position or sit down I don't feel at risk of falling!
The shots are only a stop gap measure and will work for anywhere from a month to three months. I can have more before my surgery but apparently for most people there are diminishing returns after the first set of shots...so, I am really hoping these last as long as possible, especially since I leave for my big trip to Australia and Papa New Guinea in just a bit more than a week. This is my big pre-retirement adventure, and I am getting excited! Especially looking forward to meeting Lucy55 in person! Hope the knees hold up....but so far, so good.
Hope all have a good weekend.

Octo, consider an unloader brace (custom-fit, your choice of cool colors, insurance pays 100%) to shift weight from the “condyle" (inside or outside half) of your knee with less cartilage to the condyle with more. Should buy you some more time. Was going to suggest you not get TKR in winter, as rehabbing when sidewalks & streets are icy is dangerous. (I had to do so after my OR/IF tibial plateau repair, which was emergency and not elective, in the dead of an often-subzero Chicago winter, which was no fun for me or anyone pushing my wheelchair, as I was non-weightbearing for 10 weeks). But then I realized you're in CA. Carry on...

I went to Orlando for work and extended a week. Hertz upgraded us to a Mercedes SLK something convertible. It was great, except the ride to and from the airport. This tiny two-seater only has room for one suitcase and a brief case in the trunk. So my carryon had to go on my lap while my husband drove. Hilarious.
I bought my husband a membership to a local botanical garden that has American Horticultural Society (? Well, AHS anyway) membership included. So we were able to go to the Harry Leu gardens for free. It was amazing. Don't know how all you Florida crazies can get through the summer. It was 100 degrees three days in a row in May? That's just too hot for me...
Things are more hopeful with my brother, he is becoming more alert, sleeping less, eating a little more. Still have to do the procedure to check for bladder cancer though... I feel ready to deal with it now.
I have had kind of an achy ovary feeling since February when I took a month of the Exemestane and then started Femara a few weeks ago. I am still having some severe memory issues and other cognitive crap...starting up with the bad dreams. A little feeling of murderousness comes in at odd times... I could really get in my car and do a solo Thelma and Louise some days. How does one stay married after menopause??? Oh my!

I've had a very busy two days! It's been sunshine so far with more sun and heat tomorrow. I'm taking tomorrow off! I've over done did it the past 2 days! I'll be surprised if I can move in the am! But it feels good and I definitely know I'm alive!!

Octo, I'm so happy for you! I hope the steroids continue to work for you for months and months and months! Wish I could travel more often. Enjoy your trip. I'm envious as well, but so happy for you!
Mother's Day is always difficult for me. I'm grateful to my DH for trying his best to make it wonderful. My kids devote much of the day to doing what I would like to do. But my mom is a narcissist and an alcoholic and abusive. For years, I would sob on Mother's Day because of what I lost. I do much better now. I've discovered that some of my friends also have difficult or nonexistent relationships with their moms. We understand each other's situation. I'm so grateful for the moms, aunts and sisters I've found here on the board... and especially in Crazy Town.

My oldest friend from way back to the 4th grade made my day yesterday when she said that even pet moms should be recognized on Mother's Day as pet moms raise their fur kids from when they were small
