penny candy in jars, some candy choices were even 2 for a penny, gumball machines. We used to go with to the store when my dad got the Sunday paper and each got a dime to spend on candy. If you went with the 2 for 1, you could come home with 20 pieces! If you wanted to gamble, you could put a penny in the gumball machine and if a stripie (stripped gumball) came out, it was worth 10 more cents.

If we went to a local ice cream shop, we could order their version of a Dilly Bar. Sometimes the stick under the ice cream had a stamp that gave you your next dilly bar free.

Anyone remember the Fuller Brush man who came around selling door to door?
0 -
Fuller brush , yes and I still have a broom I bought in 1967 and it is as good now as it was when new. I do not recall all the door to door salesmen or what they were selling but there certainly were a lot of them way back when.

How about the McConnon man, the peddler who came to your house with spices and food things? I remember the turquoise metal boxes the spices came in and had to look it up:
Sorry, had to edit to get picture to display.

I have a friend who makes those old spice cans into vases for artificial flower arrangements. Here are the two I have.

Remember gym uniforms? When I was going to school, they were usually one-piece romper-style outfits in navy blue or dark green or some other color that wouldn't show dirt too badly. I didn't have one of those, because my school was way too old-fashioned for such modern things. We had a two-piece outfit that consisted of short bloomer-style pants underneath a one piece blouse and skirt combo that ended roughly at our knees. The whole thing was made of a heavy-duty cotton fabric that was just slightly lighter than canvas. White cotton fabric. I can still recall my mom's look of absolute horror when I brought the thing home for the first time. I was the oldest of three girls, so she faced the prospect of a decade or so of trying to keep those utterly impractical gym uniforms clean as we made our way through junior high and then high school.

Pin curls & my aunt would tie our hair in rags (somehow) to make ringlets.

Joanne - I always see it in the Vermont Country Store catalog.

Pin curls and bobby pins remind me of Toni Waves and other home perms!! I used to hate the smell and tight curlers used in home perms used to make me a frizzy-headed little girl so the pin curls would hold!!!! Oh, the pain we used to go through!!!

Remember the Pez (candy) dispensers? And metal lunch boxes with a thermos inside?
0 -
Kayak, I had a plaid metal lunchbox that kind of matched one of my plaid skirts. Even in public school, we always had to wear dresses or skirts to school. Dress code did not change to allow pantsuits until after I left high school.

JO-5, I just looked on Amazon and they sell White Shoulders.

Joanne, we also wore the guy's ring on our ring finger with yarn wrapped around the top to make it fit!!
0 -
We wrapped string around & around the guy's ring to size it to fit our fingers, then covered the string with nail polish.
And 4 or 5 stiff, flouncy, net crinolines under the poodle skirts!!! How did we ever survive with all that elastic around our waists?
0 -
We used dental floss to make it fit, then nail polish. How did we ever SIT with all those startched itchy things??

Remember the "civil defense" drills in school (in the early '50's) when we had to practice duck and cover under our desks, in case of an atomic bomb attack? I think in conjunction with that, we were also issued dog tags with our names & other personal info.

The CD sirens were used later, maybe still are, for tornado warning

Oh yeah, I remember the hide under your drills. As well as all the people building underground "bomb" shelters in the back yard,.

Back to hair.....I remember when my mom & all the other ladies had weekly hair appointments where their hair was washed, ratted and hairsprayed into a virtual helmet. At night mom would wrap her hair in toilet paper & a shower cap so that it would stay in place until her next appointment. I remember sleeping on those hard plastic rollers and was thrilled when electric rollers came out.
