BRAVO! We love this!!! A North Dakota farmer is going viral for plowing a pro-Biden-Harris message into his field. Peter Larson says that this is the first time he has used his fields to share his political views. He hopes to encourage others to get out and vote. Great idea, Peter!

Spookiesmom, no offense taken: any of the explanations you posited could be possible. She's definitely Jewish, but he might be too--if a Jewish man wears religious jewelry, it's usually a little gold "mezzuzah" pendant (a tiny cylinder containing a parchment on which is inscribed a passage from Deuteronomy), but most Jewish men don't wear religious jewelry. They might be an interfaith marriage (such as ours--Bob's Catholic). He might be an aging hippie or reggae fan.
Trish, I didn't see "Unorthodox" but did read the book on which it was based several years ago. (It's still on my iPad). From what I understand, the miniseries' story after her "escape" does deviate somewhat from the less juicy reality of the book. I've read another couple of similar books: All Who Go Do Not Return, by Shulem Deen, his memoir about growing disillusioned with his Hasidic life in New Square (the "Square" is an Anglicization of Skver, the Ukraine town where the Skverer sect was founded). He had no marketable skills, and his wife (who also kept the family afloat with small bookkeeping jobs) kept insisting on having more children--he wanted to stop at 5. His life revolved around study and the Rebbe (leading rabbi), with whom all the men had to take Shabbat meals. He, like most of the residents, was on public aid and nobody spoke English, only Yiddish. Radio was allowed, but only for weather reports. Men & women had to walk on separate sides of the street. Nobody drove--they had to rely on the compound's bus service (with a curtain separating men & women) for trips to doctors & such. They had a primitive PC for his wife to do bookkeeping, which he began sneaking onto in order to improve his English and find out what was going on in the world, eventually getting an e-mail account. The condition of his divorce was to relinquish all claims to and forgo contact with his kids--who'd been thoroughly indoctrinated by his wife, who promptly remarried and kept pumping out kids. It took him several years to learn how to interact in a secular world and get the skills necessary for even a subsitence job. At the time the book was written he was still adjusting.
Another book is Unchosen, which profiles several escapees from Hasidism and how they managed to become secular. One went back because she couldn't handle the outside world.

Sandy, yes, they did add a lot that Feldman did NOT go through in the second half of the series--when she goes to Berlin. This did enliven things, of course. Still found it fascinating. And uplifting--to see her extricate herself from a life that so clearly would not be a happy one for her...
When Addie was telling me about Orthodox life she said that there is no working on Sunday. And extremely so. On a Sunday if one is leaving one's high-rise apartment to go out one cannot even push the Down button as this constitutes work. Someone else has to do it--or a stranger enlisted...wow.... I mean: WOW.

I would say it is rather presumptuous of Lindsey to think he is going to heaven. How will he explain to St. Peter his complicity in causing the deaths of so many and for imprisoning people who seek a better life. Just because he thumps a Bible or carries one means he is familiar with its teachings. His actions reveal he doesn't.

In no way can we so effectively hasten the dawning of the inner consciousness of another, as by showing forth the divinity within ourselves simply by the way we live. By example and not by precept. By living not by preaching. By doing not professing. -Ralph Waldo Trine

It is my belief for the most part, that when we get where we are going, whether its pearly gates or anything else, we will be imparted the wisdom to review the life we have just lived. All the mistakes, all the victories. As to anyone meeting us, it is my feeling that family and perhaps good friends will actually MEET us. But I'm not in the mainstream and haven't been for a long time since I don't see myself as religious nor feel much need to find others to share with. There are a few people around where I live that share many of the same thoughts, feelings, ideas as I, but no formal place to come together as a church. It is just a comfort to know they are out there..
Then again, it is possible if you believe strongly enough, what you think will happen immediately upon your passing just might. If anything is a misconception, you will have an eternity to clear it up. Either way, you will be fine. Those who have the attributes of say someone like Trump, well, they just recycle. They don't in fact go anywhere. They are beyond judging their own life -- so they are doomed to constant recycling. It is usually an opposite of what you just went through -- for instance, where Trump seems to have done well ( some money though ill-gotten, and fame, ill-gotten for the most part too, he would likely be just the same but an unknown with poor monetary circumstances. Just saying I doubt Graham will have too much of anything he really thinks because he just isn't even trying to let his conscience really get out to be his guide. Many of the Reps. have been that way the past few yrs.
ETA: This is just my belief and just to say if yours is different, I'm fine with that. We are all where we are MEANT to be and differences are a good thing. We were NEVER meant to be clones of each other. I don't feel the need to explain past what I've said or hopefully cause you to have to feel you need to defend your viewpoint since I'm all right with it.

Came home with the Barrett hearings going on. I had to do some cooking and when done John Kennedy was on speaking his piece. He is a crashing bore to me since no matter what he says ( good or bad ) I feel that he is heavily talking down to at least half the room. Sitting in judgement as if he should because we are moronic and can't think for ourselves. Next up was Marsha Blackburn. Female disgrace and seems to be just like Kennedy. Sure that she is the one who has been imbued with the truth and the way -- but girlie -- I see no light coming from where you are. Drying up and blowing away would be so kind of you -- but you will need to be voted out when your time comes as well.

Trill,
I think you meant Saturday for not working, not Sunday. Our Shabbos (Shabbat) starts on sundown Friday night and ends at sundown on Saturday. Like all religions, there's a wide swing in levels of observance. Hasidic/ Haredi families being the strictest. Years ago, some people would pay a “Shabbos goy" a few dollars to do some of the things that they couldn't do, like turning on lights. Technology has taken care of some of those things. Elevators can be set to stop at every floor and refrigerators sometimes have “Sabbath mode" built in.
Unorthodox was a good book but the film wasn't great. If you are interested in seeing what that level of observance looks like in everyday life, Netflix has two seasons of an Israeli TV show called Shtisel, that revolves around the lives of a Haredi family, particularly one of their sons. The son is a talented artist but that puts him in more contact with the secular world than his community finds acceptable. It's in Hebrew and Yiddish with English subtitles. It's actually a very universal theme. BTW, the actress who played the Deborah Feldman part in Unorthodox plays a character named Ruchama in Shtisel. It also gives you the opportunity to see ultra orthodox matchmaking, via shidduch dates, that most Jews who are not this religious know about but have never been subjected to. If you don't mindsubtitles, it's a good series and quite accurate right down to the divided sink in the kitchen.

Those last two entries are great Glennie. I very much commend the letter. I think people hear certain words like Roe v Wade or abortion or any phrase directly involved and they just put up their no shield. No, they are not going to listen to you and don't care what you have to say because it will be wrong. The lady who wrote the letter REALLY thought about things -- and if you are being fair and honest when you do, you might come to many of the conclusions this lady did.
The Democrats have heard it all so long that there is nothing left that would convince us we don't have the right attitude. We are ALL citizens and we should all have the right to decide what is personally right for us. We are entitled to the right to choose when we are human and sentient period. I once had a T-shirt that I loved and if I had it I would wear it just as freely and proudly as I did when I first got it. Most men that saw it just hated it instantly. It said " Women who seek to be equal to men, lack ambition". Men have tried to make many of our decisions but I think we proved long ago we are up to the task and more.

I just got back from my monthly (outdoor, socially distanced) Book Club meeting. One of our member's 96 year old mother-in-law is in failing health and has entered Hospice. Her mind is 100% clear and when talking to the nurse she asked how much time she had left. The nurse said that, of course, no one knows. The mother-in-law said, "Well, it better be until after November 3rd because I want to be here to see Trump lose the election!!" Go Gramma! Hopefully there are lots of other feisty old ladies out there with the same attiutude!

Yes indeed, Ruth. We are all hoping and from some of the memes I've seen lately it sounds pretty good. Glad to hear about a real person with a fantastic attitude who still knows who is wrong and who is right.
