I lived in Texas for almost 9 years. I do not mean to offend the state or it’s people. It was just far too conservative for me. I almost fell off the couch when I heard a car dealership offering a free gun and gun rack for purchasing a new pick up truck. It was also legal in Harris County (Houston) for a driver to have an open container, i.e. alcohol in the car! This was at least 35 years ago and I’m sure things have changed.
I have to say that I’m comfortable with my friends and community views but Northern CA skews Democrats and Liberals. My grade level team members all despise trump and we are friends as well as colleagues. I like not having to bite my tongue around them

Pundits are mystified tonight as to why Barrett couldn't give a straight answer as to whether voter intimidation is illegal, a peaceful transfer of power is possible, a President can pardon himself or anything in the Constitution enables him to unilaterally delay a Federal election, etc. The answer is blitheringly simple: she knows that should she reply the way anyone else with a law degree (or even still in law school) would, CinnamonHitler would yank her nomination in a heartbeat.
Bob explained why he won't get tested unless he has symptoms. Hospitals' policy is not to test asymptomatic healthcare professionals because anyone who tests positive would have to quarantine, and therefore there wouldn't be enough doctors & nurses to treat any patients. And his entire practice would have to close for at least 10-14 days. If he develops symptoms or I test positive, then we will isolate together. (No point in sleeping in separate rooms: should I have it, he already would and vice versa). As for me, if I test negative and we still have no symptoms by day 10, he says it'd be safe for both of us to go out again.
Gordy's temp had been running in the 99s and his allergies are bothering him. But it's down a bit tonight and allergy meds are helping. His O2 sats are 99%. His girlfriend asked their erstwhile "friend" (the plague vector), who mentioned "dying," what his symptoms are: the reply was he's tired and his knee hurts. (Probably a side souvenir of that ill-advised gym visit). Through gritted teeth I keep repeating, "I will not have schadenfreude."
I just heard that some young election workers in Harris County, TX have come up with a way to circumvent long early-voting lines caused by Abbott's cruel "one-early-voting-polling-place-and-dropbox-per-county" rule: drive-up ballot depositing. It's legal, apparently. So, however, is it legal in CA for third parties to collect absentee ballots and--presumably--deliver them to election authorities. Therefore, the CA GOP has set up its own non-official dropboxes with no labels identifying them as non-governmental, much less partisan. If you think the contents of those boxes in "blue" areas of CA will actually get delivered to the Bd. of Elections, I have a lovely ski chalet in FL to sell you.

Well, well, well. I have to say it is not a big loss. He wasn't much of a campaigner anyway. I thought his big brother usually took care of most of that. They really are down to the bottom of the barrel it seems. It has been said Trump and co., are out of money. Pulling ads right and left. Trump even got highly irritated at Fox running so many Democratic ads. Trump -- is Fox not in business??? You have no money for ads and Biden does. Put on your big boy bloomers and deal with it.

Sandy, Abbot's limit is only for dropboxes (one per county). There are multiple voting locations. Still, it is outrageous that the courts have upheld the one dropbox per county ruling!I

I think this pretty much sums it up. Trump and a lot of the Reps. are still going for the herd immunity theory and is why they are adhering to their no-mask policy at rallies and even at the WH. It will not work. And I'm still VERY upset that Trump is going out, still pumped upright with drugs and telling people ( gullible fools who go to his rallies ) that he survived fine. He just doesn't bother to tell you that you won't get anywhere near the txs. he was able to receive. Likely won't know for some time what kind of condition he is truly in or what effects may really come to haunt him.
Only up-side is: These latest tallies are his ego boosters and not much more.

October 13, 2020 (Tuesday)While the media is focused on the predetermined hearings for Amy Coney Barrett, Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court seat formerly held by the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the big story of the day is the resurgence of coronavirus.The nation is back up to more than 50,000 new cases a day, the highest rate since early August, and numbers are continuing to rise. The states currently suffering worst are those in the northern Midwest-- Wisconsin, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota—but more than 30 states are reporting rising numbers. Wisconsin is so overwhelmed with cases it's opening a field hospital this week, and it seems that Arkansas, Montana, North Dakota, and Oklahoma are right behind.More children are being diagnosed with Covid-19, as well, making up more than 77,000 new infections. The White House has abandoned the idea of controlling the virus and instead is openly embracing the idea of "herd immunity." Officials are arguing that the nation should protect our most vulnerable neighbors—the elderly and the infirm—and the rest of us should go about our lives normally, without waiting for a vaccine. While the White House has been saying this for months, it now has a group of scientists advancing the plan in a document called The Great Barrington Declaration. This idea is being pushed by the libertarian American Institute for Economic Research, and scientists whose work has been dismissed by most epidemiologists. It offers no data or scientific argument; it is a political opinion. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called the plan "unethical" because it "means allowing unnecessary infections, suffering and death." He explains that the concept of herd immunity is one used for vaccines, achieved "by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it." "Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak, let alone a pandemic," he said. "It is scientifically and ethically problematic." The idea of simply letting the infection spread is not popular among Americans, especially among the seniors Trump needs to win Florida. In 2016, seniors preferred Trump to Hillary Clinton by 49% to 44%. Now they are turning to Biden rather than Trump by 54% to 43%. Weirdly, Trump took to Twitter today to post a tweet apparently making fun of Biden by picturing him as a resident of a senior home—not calculated to win over more older Americans.This approach reinforces the idea the president is trying to push after his own bout with coronavirus: that the illness is not a big deal and that those who say it is are simply trying to hurt his chances of reelection. At the Barrett hearings, Republican Mike Lee of Utah, recently diagnosed with coronavirus, refused to wear a mask. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows also refused to wear one when talking with reporters, apparently concerned about being filmed in a mask when the official White House position was to downplay the virus.Meanwhile, another official who attended the celebration for Barrett at the Rose Garden on September 26 has tested positive for the virus. America leads the world in infections and deaths. Globally, at least 38 million cases of Covid-19 have been recorded as of 6:30 this evening. More than a million people have died. America has had at least 7,850,000 cases and more than 215,000 deaths. As horrific as those numbers are, an article published yesterday in the Journal of the American Medical Association says they are far too low. Dr. Steven Woolf, the author of the study, says that "for every two Americans that we know of who are dying of Covid-19, another American is dying." Woolf looked at what are called "excess deaths" from March through July, that is, the increase over the average number of deaths expected in those months. He found 225,530 excess deaths. Sixty-seven percent of those deaths are linked directly to Covid-19, but the remaining 33% are unexplained, suggesting this unusual spike is related to the pandemic.Erika Edwards of NBC News highlighted this study today, along with another in the same issue of the JAMA that compares U.S. death rates to those of other wealthy countries. The U.S. ranked poorly. According to the article, our Covid-19 mortality rate is 60.3 per 100,000 people. Canada's rate is 24.6 per 100,000, and Australia's was 3.3 deaths per 100,000. If we had had the same rate as Canada, we would have lost 117,000 fewer people, and 188,000 Americans would have been saved if we had the same death rate as Australia.The good news is that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said today that vaccine development is "on a really good track." Two vaccines have been put on hold as a volunteer in each trial has gotten sick, but Fauci says this is not at all unusual. He says he hopes that by November or December we should know if we have a safe and effective vaccine. If so, it will be distributed first to those who need it most, but will gradually become available to the rest of us.Once again, Dr. Fauci reminded us to wear masks, maintain physical distance from others, avoid crowds, stay outside when possible, and wash hands. "Those simple things, as simple as they sound, can certainly turn around the spikes that we see and can prevent new spikes from occurring," Fauci told Shepard Smith on CNBC Monday night. "We know that because our experience has proven to us that that is the case. We just need to hunker down and do that."0 -

Byron Dorgan, who posted this piece, served North Dakota with 12 years in the U.S. House and 18 years in the Senate......that was back when we had 'real' representatives......people who actually thought for themselves and served the people.
"When I think of Joe Biden, I don't think of politics. I have a different, indelible memory of something important that happened one night in my life some years ago.
Joe and I served together as U.S. Senators for many years.
It was one of those nights when the U. S. Senate was having late evening votes. I was sitting by myself in a corner of the Democrat Cloakroom just off the Senate floor.
Two weeks prior to that night my beautiful daughter had died from heart surgery and I was devastated beyond belief. Losing a child is a nightmare no parent is prepared to accept.
I was so filled with grief, I just didn't want to communicate with anybody. I sat in the far corner of that room off the Senator floor, staring at nothing and wondering whether I would be able to get through the profound grief I was feeling. I wondered if there was any way I should or could continue my work in the Senate.
While sitting there alone, I sensed that someone had come over to sit next to me. It was Joe Biden. He put his hand on my shoulder and then he said quietly,
"Byron I know what you are going through. I know what you are feeling.
I've been there!
And I have felt what you feel tonight.
And I know this….Your daughter will live in your heart forever."I knew Joe understood what I was feeling. His wife and daughter had been killed years before in a car accident.
Joe and I talked for nearly half an hour that night about what losing a loved one means in our lives. He told me about his faith, his strength and how he had found ways to continue with purpose in his life. It was a moment that meant so much to me.
So, now when I think about Joe Biden, I think of that moment, and I think of what it says about his decency and his character."

Everyone is worried about Biden expanding SCOTUS to balance out ideologies. I would propose that Dems continue to do what they can to delay Barrett's hearings, but also note everything she says or doesn't say. Then build cases for impeachment of both her and Kavanaugh for perjury.
If they look into conflicts of interest and insider trading, they might be able to get Thomas too.
