Omg, Jackie, you are hitting it out of the ballpark with the memes today. The ones about praying instead of taking action to actually prevent gun violence really speak to me. I have no tolerance for the pious who think somehow think they’re making a difference by praying. How the —— do they think it’s helping?

Trump found liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll in civil trial and is ordered to pay $5 million

Carroll sued the former president, accusing him of battery over an alleged rape in the 1990s and of defamation for calling her account a "hoax."

    May 9, 2023, 2:50 PM EDT

A New York jury on Tuesday found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s, but not liable for her alleged rape

The jury awarded her $5 million in damages for her battery and defamation claims.

Asked on their verdict sheet if Carroll, 79, had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump raped Ms. Carroll,” the nine-person jury checked the box that said “no.”
Asked if Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll,” the jury checked the box that said “yes.” Both allegations were elements of Carroll’s battery claim.

The six men and three women also found Trump had defamed her by calling her claims a “hoax” and “a con job.”

»»» Carroll did not comment outside of court, but her attorney Roberta Kaplan said, "We are very happy."«««

Trump, a 2024 presidential candidate, has consistently denied Carroll’s claims. He blasted the verdict on his social media website shortly after the verdict was handed down.

"I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS. THIS VERDICT IS A DISGRACE — A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!" he wrote on Truth Social.

The verdict marks the first time a former president has been found civilly liable for sexual misconduct.

A Trump spokesman said in a statement, "Make no mistake, this entire bogus case is a political endeavor targeting President Trump because he is now an overwhelming front-runner to be once again elected President of the United States."

"This case will be appealed, and we will ultimately win,” the statement said.

Carroll sued Trump accusing him of battery and defamation in Manhattan federal court last year, alleging he raped her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store near his Fifth Avenue home in 1995 or 1996. She first went public with the claim in 2019 in her book, “What Do We Need Men For?: A Modest Proposal.”

The jury verdict carries no criminal implications.  The legal standard for liability in the civil case — the preponderance of the evidence — was not as high as in criminal cases. The civil benchmark is that it’s more likely than not that something occurred, while the standard for convictions in criminal cases is proof of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Trump, first as president and then as a private citizen, called her account a fiction that she concocted to boost book sales, and has said the writer is “not my type.” He did not testify in the case, but portions of his videotaped deposition from October were played for the jury.

The verdict was required to be unanimous.

So good to read that the Carroll verdict was basically for her. I do understand why they disallowed the rape allegation. I think just the fact that she had two other people saying they too were assaulted, as well as the friends she told immediately after the incident gave her all she needed.

I'm in no way surprised that the Loon went into another FULL denial. He sees himself as some omnipotent being who actually can do anything he wants — just like he said on that old tape. How else could anyone do the things he does and say the things he says. He gets away with it just for that reason. If you have no conscience, you have no barrier. You aren't restricted by morals and ethics and most of the rest of us — seeing and knowing how wrong things are think justice will naturally kick in — because for us it would. Sociopathic people though usually do escape — for some time. The Loon being somewhat fortunate got all the way to the top

Once again, many of the Loon's kind don't really want him but having stood by for years now, they don't know how to turn it all off.

I'm totally disgusted by the fact that the Loon is using the same old tired tactics of name-calling the trial a hoax or witch-hunt to cause him trouble since he is 'running' again. Were he the choir boy he likes to make out as, he was even given an extra chance to show up and defend his honor just like Ms. Carroll did. He said he was coming back to do so.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with why so many of his kind do not want him to run in 24' He is a broken record of grievances and people are tired of the same old thing — amid a slew of losses. The horrid part is all of them are and have been divorced from their spines since Trump came on the scene and I know are once again praying that the Democrats will get rid of him for them.

    The biggest picked-upon billionaire ever.

Must be glad he chose to go to Florida. He has earned it all. Even his con-man Dad told him not to mess around in New York — but true to form. His dad only gave him a challenge and he had to push it. On his best day ——————-

The Reps. make it so difficult to feel one ounce of care for them. They seem for the most part so eager to kick dust in your face and walk away feeling justified for having had to do it.

So much of this is true.

I also see that loose should be lose.

Those of us really are upset when we don't get what we REALLY choose because the Reps. have the power to stop us. I hope we might change that.

Yeah, for the conviction and why is he so sure he was her type? Repulsive lizard looking with a bad haircut, dunlap belly and orange make-up. This occurred in 1995 long before he was elected president so why do they keep talking about him as if he were president then? Being president later, doesn't excuse his behavior then or even now. I hope she gets her $5 million but feel it will be like getting blood from a rock.

Glad they finally decided George Santos is a confabulist of the first order and should be dismissed from serving our nation. What a loser.

    From Call To Activism

BREAKING! Prominent Republicans have begun to TURN on Donald Trump after Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll. Here’s a list:-Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson condemned Trump in one of the first statements after the verdict.“Over the course of my over 25 years of experience in the courtroom, I have seen firsthand how a cavalier and arrogant contempt for the rule of law can backfire,” Hutchinson said. “The jury verdict should be treated with seriousness and is another example of the indefensible behavior of Donald Trump.”-Mo Brooks of Alabama — a one-time Trump ally wrote that the “GOP CANNOT afford REPEAT sexual predator offender as 2024 president nominee. Offends voters badly.”We will update the list as this develops.

So only 2 have made statements about Trump's sexual predator behavior so far, where are the rest of those who profess to be men? I am sure he can count on Matt Gaetz for continued support since they share the same proclivity as well as some of the other slime balls that unfortunately represent our government. If Moscow Mitch doesn't speak out, his silence will be an endorsement for this behavior and the depraved man who thinks "stars are entitled to do this". Will Lindsay finally grow a set and speak out or will he, too, remain silent? Disgusting that women have had to endure behaviors such as this for decades without repercussions. Throw Kavanagh in there for good stead as well and Clarence, too. If they were not in power and protected by privilege, they would be in prison and that's where they belong.

Just a little recap of the video deposition shown to the jury (just in case you are not appalled enough already):

“She’s not my type… it’s not politically correct to say it. I know that, but I’ll say it anyway,” Trump said.

Trump turned to Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, “You wouldn’t be a choice of mine either,” Trump said to her face.

Kaplan, who kept her cool and didn’t respond to Trump’s repeated personal attacks against her, asked him if he felt that stars could actually grab women “by the pussy.”

“Historically that’s true with stars. If you look over the last million years, that’s largely true, unfortunately—or fortunately,” he said.

Kaplan followed up by asking if Trump considers himself a star.

    “Yeah,” he acknowledged.

****my editorial comment: "unfortunately—or fortunately,” WTF! 🤢

Agree wholeheartedly, Ruth. Unfortunate that he thinks he is fortunate enough to be able to do this without repercussions or even an inkling of knowing how wrong this behavior is from any perspective. Would he tolerate someone doing this to Ivanka or his GD? Already know he has probably already done this to Melania and shame on her for condoning such behavior. There is a word for selling your body and she could be the poster child for high paid call girl.

The cure for all the ills and wrongs, the cares, the sorrows, and the crimes of humanity, all lie in that one word “love.” It is the divine vitality that everywhere produces and restores life. To each and every one of us, it gives the power of working miracles if we will.    - Lydia Maria Child

Hmmm, in my book the Loon is a lot of things, but never a star. He is definitely a pig and devoid of the ability to feel anything for anyone beyond his own sense of self and his own gratification. The world at large and most of the people around him are just so much of a prop — useful until it or they aren't. He is the only real thing.

Never has been such a grand sense of entitlement. We all should feel fortunate that there are very few people as far off the beaten path as the Loon and thank goodness for all of us.

I do think though, and believe me it is coming so late, he has reached the end of being able to weasel out of all of his just desserts. This first 'trial' handled so poorly, has possibly given him a little window into some of the things that are coming next. I would be so depressed I wouldn't be able to hold up my head. He was not able to manipulate and stall or have any sort of real influence. He is out of power and all the things that saved him before are gone. No wonder he worked so hard, up to and including the 1/6 insurrection.

So, he has this preview and one way or the other —- I do think everything coming down the pike will be losses on his side of the page as well. He had his day in the sun but couldn't let it be enough.

I don't watch CNN as much as I use too. I think they are hoping for better ratings. Maybe they will get them but short-lived. As to the above — in the long run, I don't think it will help CNN at all.
