Interesting note on this. There was a person with an entry that said they were un-aware of this portion of what happened on 1/6. I would have thought everyone would know.

So that brings me to hearing this morning that at least four of the top people (leaders) of the Proud Boys was convicted of Sedition. Even though I thought they would be I was thrilled. The other one so far hasn't been convicted of the most serious charge — they are still discussing it, I think. In any case, it comes up that he was not a long-standing member of the group and the jury (who are seen as being very diligent in their deliberations) are giving some weight to the fact that he was not with the group nearly as long.

I'm torn — he still 'did the crime', but I do understand that maybe he is seen more as following orders than actually deciding what the steps up to and the orders would be. Depending on their instructions it likely makes sense not to come down as hard on him.

This is though a very good thing. I think it is really important to help people see that the U.S. and DOJ will not tolerate 1/6 type events and that should you feel, you must, you may pay a very high price for giving yourself this privilege. Crude to say perhaps, but it is also what you get and highly deserve for giving any credit to an old fat orange guy who got away with almost everything her ever did.

Just wonder how these Prouds Boys would be behaving today if they and all the 1/6 group had not been caught. I hope it is giving major signals to all extremist groups and anyone thinking of joining any of these groups.

Jury convicts Enrique Tarrio of the Proud Boys on seditious conspiracy charge

    May 4, 202311:20 AM ET

    Carrie Johnson

Henry "Enrique" Tarrio, leader of the Proud Boys, shown here at a protest in support for Cubans demonstrating against their government in Miami on July 16, 2021.

Former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio and three other members of the far-right Proud Boys group have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy by a federal jury in Washington, D.C.

Jurors also convicted Tarrio and the others of obstructing an official proceeding, conspiracy to prevent an officer from discharging their duties, obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder and destruction of government property with value of over $1,000 in one of the most important cases to date stemming from the siege on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Jurors failed to reach a verdict on seditious conspiracy as to one other defendant, Dominic Pezzola, who is well known for taking a shield from a police officer on Jan. 6 and using it to bash in a window at the Capitol.

Judge Timothy Kelly polled the jurors on the charges and instructed them to return to deliberate on other counts for which they have failed to reach a verdict. He excused them at 11:13 A.M.

The verdict amounts to a significant victory for the Justice Department, which has now secured convictions against top leaders of both the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers for their roles in the attempt to keep former President Trump in power and stop certification of the 2020 election.

"Politics was no longer something for the debating floor or the voting booth," prosecutor Conor Mulroe told jurors in his closing argument last week. "For them, politics meant actual physical violence. ... And they liked it and they were good at it."

Tarrio and the other defendants, who have been held in federal custody in the course of the trial, face as many as 20 years in prison on the most serious charges against them.

Proud Boys operated as fighting force for Trump on Jan. 6, prosecutors say

Former President Donald Trump has loomed over the trial like a shadow.

Both prosecutors and defense lawyers played the jury a video of Trump calling on the Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by" during a presidential debate, a moment that made the club jubilant and produced a flood of new membership inquiries.

Lawyers for Tarrio, who spent Jan. 6 in a Baltimore hotel room, but who monitored the action from afar, argued he was a mere "scapegoat" for the Justice Department and a far easier target.

"It was Donald Trump's words, it was his motivation, it was his anger that caused what occurred on January 6 in your amazing and beautiful city," defense attorney Nayib Hassan said. "They want to use Enrique Tarrio as a scapegoat for Donald Trump and those in power."

But prosecutors reminded the jury that after a mob overtook the Capitol that day, Tarrio sent a message that read, "make no mistake, we did this."

Jurors in the Proud Boys trial hear the start of the seditious conspiracy case

The sprawling case included 500,000 chat messages, video clips, podcasts and even a police riot shield. FBI special agents, police on the front lines on January 6, and former members of the Proud Boys who pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors made up the bulk of the Justice Department witness list.

Two defendants also agreed to testify — with checkered results.

Zachary Rehl, the former leader of the Philadelphia chapter of the Proud Boys, painted himself as a family man only to be confronted with video of him allegedly spraying law enforcement officers with chemicals.

Pezzola, who broke a window in the Capitol that other rioters used to pour into the building, told jurors he took responsibility for his mistakes that day, only to call the case "corrupt" in an outburst during cross examination.

Defense lawyers said there was not a scrap of written evidence that the men had conspired to stop the certification of the election by using force.

"There are no statements in any of those chats regarding stopping the transfer of power ... with or without force," Hassan said.

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes convicted of seditious conspiracy in Jan. 6 trial

Nick Smith, an attorney for defendant Ethan Nordean, cited "nearly constant attempts to lure you into rendering a judgment based on anger" about the defendants' right-wing political views and inflammatory language.

The other defendant is Joseph Biggs, a former military service member who worked for the conspiracy site InfoWars. His attorney, Norm Pattis, told jurors many of the Proud Boys genuinely believed the 2020 election had been stolen.

"Why do I stress the president's role?" Pattis asked the jury. "He's not on trial here much though I wish he were. ... If my president tells me my republic is being stolen, who do I listen to: the thief or the commander in chief?"

MCCARTHY JUST F*CKED UP MAJOR! More than TWENTY veterans groups have sent a letter to Congress protesting McCarthy’s budget, saying it would “leave many veteran resources open to cuts, potentially undoing years of progress VA has made.” Veterans are BLASTING the debt ceiling legislation passed by the Republican-controlled House warning it will cut key programs and services for the nation’s retired service members. They say the GOP bill is a disaster for Veterans. If the Republican plan were to go into effect, it would mean 81,000 jobs lost in the department’s health services, 30 million fewer outpatient visits for veterans and an increase of disability backlogs by 134,000 claims, among a range of other concerns. The budget was the first test for McCarthy as Speaker and he has FAILED spectacularly!!AND HE DESERVES IT! #NoMAGAHealthCareCuts

Balance (harmony) is never static.  One does not achieve a state of balance
that, once achieved, will stay that way forever.  We may want to get our bodies
in shape--and we can.  Yet those bodies are a process, and being in shape is
ongoing, not something one accomplishes and then moves on to bigger and better
things.  We may want to get our cars or our houses just the way we want them,
and we can do that.  And the balance we seek for our houses or cars is fleeting
at best.  Life is just like our checkbooks.  We need to learn the tools for bringing
them back into balance, for once we get them balanced, they will only have a
possibility of staying that way if never use them again.
Living in harmony is an ongoing process.

Oh, how long we have had to wait and there will still be more waiting. So difficult when most of us knew this person long before he ran and Putin got him in. The couple of times I saw the Loon on TV — once when things were in upheaval with Ivanka Trump, and the other time when Dh and I tried to watch The Apprentice. Both times, somehow right through the TV (I have no idea how this was even possible) I felt an evilness and a major amt. of discomfort.

From that time forward, I have been unable to accept this person. So, the time spent in waiting hangs quite heavy. I do want his downfall to be complete. So no choice but to wait till karma and the powers that be finally come together.

It’s interesting, Spookie, and I’ve seen other tattoos on women’s chests after surgery. I have my doubts, tho, that FB banned the photo, I think that’s just an attention grabbing comment.

I googled the tattoo controversy. The photo was shared, and then taken down from Facebook in 2013. After much push-back (and great publicity for the tattooist), it was reinstated.

I thought I had seen that photo many years ago. I even believe it’s been posted on bco before so I found it hard to believe that this was a new FB controversy. Thanks for the explanation, Ruth 😊

Jackie: It is not hard to recognize the devil incarnate when you see him so that is why you experienced what you did watching him on TV. I never watched him though caught an occasional glimpse because I thought he was a turd from the get go. Can't stand the affected way he talks and wonder if he always talks like that? It's like chalk on a blackboard for me.

I think that tattoo is amazing and why is it any different than a bathing suit top on another woman? Glad to hear it was reinstated.

I guess cruz dropped the Raphael so he would not be identified as Latino? Didn't work and he is a disgrace to his heritage and to humanity in general. His wife must have elephant hide to be able to continue to support a husband who allowed a president (and continue to support him) to insult her. If he were my husband (wouldn't be because he's definitely not my type because I never liked sleaze balls), he would have been handed his walking papers long ago. Therefore I don't think much of her either.

Yes, there doesn't seem to be a revise button evident so you can make corrections on a post. I usually need to make spelling corrections so I would like that option again.

Clarence Thomas — who let a GOP megadonor foot bills for him for years — said being a Supreme Court justice 'is not worth doing for what they pay'

Story by kvlamis@insider.com (Kelsey Vlamis) •

    • Clarence Thomas's financial dealings have come under scrutiny following a series of reports.
    • In a 2001 speech, Thomas said serving on the Supreme Court wasn't worth it for the money.
    • A group of Democratic lawmakers wants to withhold funding from the court until it adopts a code of ethics.

Justice Clarence Thomas — who has accepted lavish vacations and other financial benefits from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow for years — said in a speech in 2001 that serving on the Supreme Court wasn't worth it for what it paid.

"The job is not worth doing for what they pay," Thomas said during a speech in 2001, The New York Post reported at the time. "The job is not worth doing for the grief. But it is worth doing for the principle."

Thomas was speaking to the Bar Association in Savannah, Georgia, according to the Post. In the speech, which was resurfaced this week by The Nation writer Jeet Heer, Thomas discussed his efforts to gain custody of his then-10-year-old grandnephew. The Post reported Thomas cried during the speech and thanked his lawyer who worked on the custody battle.

In 2001, the salary for an associate Supreme Court justice was $178,300, while the chief justice made $186,300. As of 2023, the salary for an associate justice is $285,400, while the chief justice makes $298,500.

ProPublica reported this week that Thomas in 2008 sent his grandnephew, the one referred to in the speech, to Hidden Lake Academy, a residential program in Georgia, and that Crow covered the $6,000 per month bill. The outlet previously reported that Crow had paid for Thomas and his wife, Ginni Thomas, to take extravagant vacations, and that Thomas has sold his childhood home to Crow but did not disclose the sale.

A group of 15 Democratic lawmakers now wants to withhold $10 million from Supreme Court funding until the court adopts a code of ethics, The Hill reported.

Talk about showing your backside, hugely. I will gladly trade salaries (my social security which is under $1,000. a month.) He did say while salary wasn't worth it, the principle was. It seems he isn't aware he doesn't seem to know the definition of principles.

Most of the court is not worth the powder and lead needed to blow them to kingdom come. Just taking associate pay before the current raise times 9 tells me we are paying through the nose for a number of them who apparently with no thought what-so-ever of propriety or using outdated ethics and standards keep going their merry way as un-concerned as any extremist.

You would think that these people above many others should be of the most sterling character and not play politics with people's lives. One would think that given such a sacred and weighty duty would made a red line so broad, but many of them are garbage, bought by the highest bidder like too many others in our government.

I don't think we will get much of our honor and integrity back. Truly sad.
