Looking for information on surgery options..

IDC, ER+, PR+, HER2-, 1.8cm, wasn't in lymph nodes in the original biopsy.

How did you decide on your surgery? I want this gone and don't want to constantly worry it's going to come back, but also want to keep sensation. Is it possible to do a masectomy with reconstruction during the same surgery while maintaining sensation?

I'm a teacher so I don't have the flexibility to work at home or come in late/leave early. I want it done!

    hi Hokies,

Sorry that you find yourself here. A mastectomy removes all of the underlying breast tissue, nerves included. I don’t recall anyone gaining any sensation beyond the skin. There is often a loss of skin sensation as well, even with skin sparing surgery, but many develop some skin sensation over time though it varies by individual. That being said, there may be newer techniques that preserve sensation somehow. It’s been 13 years since my surgery. I do have skin sensation (I have implants and had a skin sparing bmx) but nothing beyond that. I did have one step implants , no TE’s, placed at the time of the bmx. It was both skin and nipple sparing so I was one and done but that is not typical.
I’m a retired teacher who still subs. The year I was dx’ed was the year I moved from K to grade 1. Almost all of my grade 1 families knew me from K, but it was a shock to tell them I was going on medical leave just 10 days into the school year. I was out for about 3 months and glad I didn’t push myself until I felt fully ready, physically and emotionally, to return. One frustration you may understand… I hand picked my sub. She was fabulous and then the darn district offered her a permanent position in one of our middle schools! I felt terrible because I had assured the families that they would have the same sub throughout my absence but I had no control over that in the end. They desperately needed a middle school teacher and my sub really wanted a permanent position. Take care
