Breast MRI Results

It’s weird to be posting here for myself. I’ve been on this site for 1.5 years as I’ve been supporting my sister since she was diagnosed with MBC.

But today I am posting for myself. Had a breast MRI yesterday. My PCP ordered it because of my sister having clear mammograms prior to her dx, and my having dense breast tissue and having been diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome. The latter doesn’t increase my risk for Bc, but she ordered the MRI anyway. I didn’t expect anything to come of it other than an “all clear” letter.

Certainly wasn’t expecting a call from my doctor less than three hours after the exam. There was an abnormal finding and I’ve been referred for a biopsy.

I am assuming it will be a false alarm or very early stage, but don’t know why I am assuming this,

I wanted to see if anyone who has experience reading these test results can give me their thoughts. From what I’ve read, it’s a non mass enhancement, so it appears that an area lit up and then washed out which is the cause for suspicion. The size isn’t meaningful to me and I don’t know if this happens frequently and isn’t cause for concern or if this will likely show up as cancer.

Any info would be helpful. I am someone who reads every test and researches all of it to better understand. Have done that with my sister as well as when I was taking care of both my parents before they passed. It provides an illusion of control by becoming more knowledgeable.

Thank you.

Results:

FINDINGS: Right breast:* The breast is composed of heterogeneous fibroglandular tissue. Minimal background parenchymal enhancement is present.* There is focal nonmass enhancement measuring 6 (AP) x 5 (ML) x 4 (SI) mm, at 2:00, 7 cm from the nipple (post contrast image 97). Kinetic curve analysis shows fast initial uptake with washout on delayed imaging.* There are no morphologically abnormal axillary lymph nodes.

IMPRESSION: Right breast: Nonmass enhancement Measuring up to 6 mm at 2:00, 7 cm from the nipple is suspicious. Recommend MRI guided biopsy.BI-RADS CATEGORY 4

Hi @yosemitesam, I’m sorry that you have to go through the stress of a biopsy and waiting for the results. Imaging can’t make a diagnosis which is why a biopsy is ordered. You are correct in assuming that if it is positive it will most likely be very early stage since 6 mm is small. Hopefully you’ll be able to come back to post that the results are benign. All the best!
