Concerned about Pending Diagnosis

I had my first mammogram at 40 last week and have already been called back twice for additional testing. In the most recent report, they requested a diagnostic mammogram and another targeted ultrasound to evaluate a focal hypoechoic non-mass lesion with tubular architecture in the left breast. Based on your experience, is this most likely cancerous? I have not had a biopsy yet, but am so so worried.

Hi @boymama25, I’m sorry that you are dealing with the worry that callbacks and requests for additional imaging bring. Unfortunately imaging can’t tell whether a mass is cancer; only a biopsy can do that. Radiologists suggest a biopsy if they think that there is a greater than 2% chance of malignancy. The further imaging will help them decide. I hope things work out well for you.

@maggie15, thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I'm very early on this path and I'm trying to stay optimistic that the suspicious findings will turn out to be nothing, but I'm realizing quickly that the anxiety/worry part of this is really hard to manage.

  • @boymama25 I am the same age and in a very similar situation. (I just made a post with my story yesterday) My biopsy is Tuesday (3 days from now). The waiting is excruciating.

@amd.lola1212 I'm so sorry you are also going through this stressful situation. My biopsy is next Tuesday, the week after yours. When I had my first mammogram, I assumed everything would be fine and did not expect to have so much follow-up. I keep trying to remind myself that there's a chance the results will be benign, but it's so hard not to worry about the worst case scenario.

@boymama25 and @amd.lola1212, we know it’s not easy, but there’s still hope! Many biopsies turn out to be benign, so try to hold onto that. We’re thinking of you and keeping our fingers crossed! Please come back and let us know how it goes.
