Male cancer that presents as HER 2+ metastatic breast cancer

My partner was diagnosed with CUP that is presenting as HER 2+ metastatic breast cancer. He received radiation treatment for a brain tumor and now is experiencing radiation necrosis. Boswellia has been prescribed. We are looking for some information about using this supplement. Thank you.

    Hi John,

I am sorry to hear of your partner’s situation. I am unfamiliar with CUP, but we do have both alternative and complementary treatment threads on the site. Search for boswellia to see if anyone has posted about it. You might also google some of the major cancer centers, like Weil Cornell or Johns Hopkins as some of them have comprehensive lists of herbal/complementary treatments that may address some of your concerns.

Take care and hoping for continuing recovery for your partner.

    Hi @johnrezzadrive235,

Sorry to hear about your partner's cancer and the side effects of radiation. Boswellia is used to reduce brain swelling caused by radiation. Here is a link to MSK's herbs and supplements website which gives good information.

While radiation kills cancer cells in some unlucky people it causes lasting damage. I lost the function of my right lung but thankfully the left lung still works. My pulmonologist explained that some people are sensitive to transforming growth factor beta 1. This causes the healing process which follows radiation to go wild causing out of control scarring leading to fibrosis. In the brain the fibrosis disrupts blood flow leading to necrosis. Steroids, hyperbaric oxygen, surgery and stem cell therapy sometimes help.

Hopefully the damage can be reversed but in any event vestibular physical therapy can help improve balance and functioning if areas of the brain are damaged. My husband has white matter disease and this type of PT has been very helpful.

A cancer diagnosis is bad but it's a gut punch when the treatment causes such debilitating side effects. I hope the brain damage can be reversed or contained and your parter has the best possible outcome.
