Xeloda mouth sores

Hello Everyone.

I am wondering what people who are on Xeloda do when they develop mouth sores? I have been on it for months, but only recently have I started to have trouble with mouth sores. I thought I had burned my mouth on something hot but couldn't recall any incident. The back of my gums and the top of my mouth are quite painful. These areas are very red and irritated, but I don't see sores per se. I will talk to my oncologist, but I believe there is some sort of mouthwash available to help with the pain? Just wondering about others' experiences. Thanks very much.💜 Angela

Hi @tazbob! We're really sorry you're dealing with that discomfort. Hopefully others who’ve been on Xeloda will jump in soon to share what’s helped them. In the meantime, here are two helpful articles from our main site that talk about mouth sores during treatment, including tips and possible relief options:

    https://www.breastcancer.org/managing-life/diet-nutrition/healthy-eating-during-treatment/eating-with-side-effects/sore-mouth

Hope this helps. Wishing you some relief soon.

@tazbob On Xeloda, I tend to get mouth ulcers, so I regularly use baking soda mouthwash to prevent them.
In some cycles, I also get sensitive gums (without canker sores), which subside after my week-long break.
There are soothing mouthwashes that your health-care team can suggest.
Otherwise, the advice offered by the moderators is very appropriate and helped me a lot during intravenous chemotherapy.
I hope you'll soon find a solution to ease your pain, because eating properly is essential for your health and, above all, for your morale.

@tazbob Sorry you're dealing with mouth sores. I have been on X for a couple years and I do get them periodically. Great info above and I use the same regimen and typically does the job for me in a couple days. Hoping you get relief quickly.

Thank you very much for your feedback. The salt water rinse seems to be helpful. My oncologist has also prescribed the mouthwash. I appreciate your help.💜
