Lupron Vs Ovary Removal

Options

I was diagnosed with Stage 2A invasive lobular carcinoma. I had a lumpectomy and radiation which I completed in January 2025. I am currently getting monthly Lupron injections to put me into menopause and also taking letrozole. I am having significant mood swings with the lupin injections and I am considering having my ovaries removed. I am concerned that I will experience the same symptoms with ovary removal and am unable to tell if it's Lupron making it worse or if I Will have same symptoms with ovary removal? Any have this experience ?

@brunorosie16, we're sorry for the reasons that have brought you to this forum, but know that you're in a place of great support. Regarding the side effects from your Lupron injections, it is common for the menopausal symptoms to be significant especially in th first few months, but the symptoms should taper off with time as your body adjusts. The same menopausal symptoms can also be significant with oopherectomy because both cause abrupt cessation of estrogen. Talk to your medical team, because in some cases, Lupron dosage may be adjustable, which might help.

Ovarian removal (oophorectomy) may be a good option if you're not tolerating certain side effects that are injection-specific, or if you also have any heightened risk for ovarian cancer, but note that the surgery is not reversible, whereas the effects from Lupron can be alleviated if the injections are stopped.
