Biopsy

hi I had surgery 4 years ago for a DCIS . This year I’ve been called back for a biopsy today after they say there is an area which could be calcifications. I had a nightmare biopsy as it was nearly on my chest wall. Worried now , is this normal to happen after surgery around the area and why would they do a biopsy what determines the suspicion?

Hi @dougals, I'm sorry that you have to deal with the worry of another biopsy. The calcifications could be benign and possibly the result of the lumpectomy. There also is the possibility that they are a symptom of a recurrence. The only way to tell is by having the biopsy and waiting for the pathology report.

I also had a biopsy close to the chest wall which caused quite a bit of bruising and pain. I got some breastfeeding freezer pads to put in my bra. They were much more effective than the small ice packs I was sent home with. I hope the biopsy goes well and you get a benign result.

    Hi @dougals.

We are sorry to hear that you have to go through this. No one wants to experience this, and the waiting does not make it any better.

Please know you’re in our thoughts and prayers. We’re hoping for the best possible outcome for you, please keep us posted.

The calcifications could be "fat necrosis," which is harmless. Take it one step at a time—the biopsy this time might go more smoothly (a lot of advancements have been made since 4 years ago).
