Potential Breast Implant Illness and Alternative Reconstruction Options

Hello all,

I was originally diagnosed in my early 30s with DCIS in 2015, had multiple lumpectomies to obtain clear margins then and radiation. I had a recurrence (IDC) in 2018, had bilateral skin/nipple sparing pre-pec direct to implant reconstruction along with some post surgical complications that have since resolved. Since my surgery, I have progressively gained weight, lost energy and developed digestive issues, such as food sensitivities (oats, gluten), Barrett’s esophagus, and IBS like symptoms (among many other things like migraines and chronic inflammation). Since most tests to diagnose/rule out have turned up inconclusive, I can’t help but wonder if the implants are impacting my overall health. My intention was always to have them temporarily with young children and to go back for flap once they are older.

I’m curious if anyone has had a similar experience with inflammatory side effects, if you had support from your surgeons, and how you proceeded forward? I’d really like to avoid large surgeries, and I really want to remove the implants, but I also don’t think I want to go flat. It’s a conundrum and finding someone with similar experience might help me navigate through some scenarios as I begin to explore my options.

Thank you!
