Dental surgery and chemotherapy
Hi, I am having a tooth extracted soon and want to know if chemotherapy (I'm on Doxil now), affects the bone graft healing that is done during this surgery? I am not on any bisphosphonates or bone strengthening drugs, only Doxil. I will probably not have an implant, a bridge will not work, and just leave it open. I am 79 and don't know if it is worth it to invest in a long term dental fix. I'm hoping at least the bone graft will heal nicely. Anyone with experience with this? thanks.

Hi @ninaca! It’s completely understandable to have questions and worries going into dental work while on treatment! Many people in the community have been through similar situations, and you’re not alone in trying to sort out what’s best for your health and comfort.
Experiences can vary, so your oncology and dental teams are really the best ones to guide you on how Doxil may affect healing and what options make sense for you right now. But it makes sense to want the graft to heal well and to think carefully about what’s worth pursuing at this stage.
I hope others who’ve been through something similar can share what helped them — and I’m sending you good thoughts for a smooth procedure and an easy recovery.
Here are some things though that you could ask your doctor:
How might Doxil affect my healing after a tooth extraction and bone graft?- Is there an ideal time in my chemo cycle to schedule the dental procedure so healing is easier?
- Do my current blood counts suggest any higher risk for infection or slow healing?
- Would you recommend antibiotics before or after the extraction as a precaution?
- Are there any signs or symptoms after the procedure that should make me call you right away?
- Is there anything specific I should avoid—or do—to support healing while on Doxil?
We hope this is helpful 🤗

I recall that my oncologist wanted me to get all dental work done before I started chemo. The risk of infection was much increased if I recall correctly. This is definitely a question for them. I hope you’re not in pain from your tooth though!
