Two biopsies in two weeks?

Hello—

I went for my screening mammogram and an area of distortion was found. I went back for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, and the distortion was still there as well as a mass. I had the mass biopsied, and the doctors originally thought the mass was the same spot as the distortion, but the follow up mammogram showing the clip indicated that the areas were a couple of centimeters apart. I had to go back for for a second mammogram 10 days later for the area of distortion. Has anyone else had to do this? Anyone else experienced a benign mass and then also an area of distortion? So hard to understand it all, whether or not these two are related etc. Anyone have a lumpectomy or surgery even with benign results? Thanks!

Hi @millieco — welcome, and we’re really glad you reached out. What you’re describing can definitely feel confusing and overwhelming, and many of our members have been in similar situations.

It isn’t uncommon for a screening mammogram to find more than one area that needs a closer look. Sometimes a mass and an area of distortion turn out to be related, but other times they’re completely separate findings — which is why your team is being thorough and checking each area individually. A second mammogram or additional imaging is pretty standard when radiologists want to clarify exactly what they’re seeing.

We’ve also heard from members who needed surgery or a lumpectomy even when their biopsy results were benign, often because the imaging still showed something that needed to be removed or confirmed. Every case is unique, but you’re definitely not alone in having multiple steps in the work-up.

If you’re comfortable, you might ask your care team to walk you through how the findings relate (or don’t), and what the next steps are. They can help make sense of the bigger picture.

We’re here for you — please keep us posted on how things go, and don’t hesitate to ask more questions as they come up. 💗
