Weight Loss Drugs and Mammogram Results??

Hey all,

Hope this is the same group I originally joined in 2002 when I first was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. Had lumpectomy, chemo & rads and was an active member for quite a while, but got burned out after a few years.

Now, I'm seeking advice. Is anyone on the new weight loss drugs? I've been taking Zepbound since last July, and lost 30 lbs. in 4 months.

Went for my yearly mammo on Monday morning. This morning, Wednesday, I get a call from the clinic wanting to reschedule me for another view of the right breast (was in left one first time).

I am hearing that a significant loss (and gain) in weight can result in abnormal scans, as a result of more density and less fatty tissue. I told the tech that when she was doing my scans but when they called me this AM and I asked if that affected the results, she looked in the file and said there was nothing noted to alert them that I had lost 30 lbs.!

Now I'm rescheduled for Jan. 29th, two weeks and two days from now. Of course, I am beside myself. If it was bad, wouldn't they have schedule me right away or ordered a sono instead? That's what happened the first time…….mammo came back "suspicious" and they scheduled me within a day or two for the ultrasound……from there, breast surgeon who did the biopsy which confirmed I had Stage 1.

Has anyone lost weight, then gone for a mammo? What happened? Did they have to retake them? I'm trying hard not to panic, but after 24 years of getting the all clear sign, it's really concerning me.

Thanks in advance and shout out to anyone still truckin' who was also in the group back in 2002!

Hi Laura — welcome back, and congratulations on your weight loss. We’re sorry you’re dealing with this anxiety again, though, and we’re really glad you reached out. 💗

Yes, members here have shared that significant weight loss can sometimes lead to a call-back for extra mammogram views, simply because breast tissue can look different after changes in body fat. A request for additional views — especially with a two-week wait — is very common and often about getting clearer images, not urgency.

Given your history, it makes complete sense that this is bringing up a lot. You’re not alone while you wait, and we’re glad you’re here. Please keep us posted!
